On October 2, 2004, Rufus Edwards (photo) was at the Spotlight nightclub in West Croydon. Witnesses later testified that Rufus had given £25,000 to a man named “Chippie” to purchase a kilogram of cocaine. A dispute arose when Rufus demanded his money back due to the poor quality of the cocaine.
That night, Rufus, accompanied by friends Wayne Douglas and Mikey, went to the Spotlight club. Panic ensued on the dance floor when shots were fired, resulting in Rufus being fatally wounded and security coordinator Mark Warmington being shot at the front door. Douglas described seeing Rufus lying flat on the floor, with blood coming from his back to his shoulder.

The investigation led to nine men being charged in connection with the shootings. However, six were cleared, and the remaining three were acquitted. Among them, Michael Lindo, 25, of Clapham, South London, was acquitted of murdering Mr. Warmington, plotting to kill Mr. Edwards, and conspiring to commit murders in Bristol and Croydon. Its storyline will help millions of parents try to understand just a little bit more what their teenager is going through in our modern world and will help those of us with younger children to prepare for the future.
But what I really praise it for is giving me a huge wake-up call.
Before watching this, I often thought that the parents of murderers should be shoved in the dock along with their killer kids.
Naively, I believed that for a person to kill, their mums or dads must somehow have played a tiny part, and I wondered: have they been abused or neglected by their parents?
Maybe they’ve come from a dysfunctional or absent family who take drugs.
Have they somehow been warped because of a lack of moral guidance?
There are plenty of cases where I’d have been right.
One of the ten-year-olds who killed James Bulger was said to have become so desensitised after watching horror film Child’s Play 3, he imitated one of the scenes.
If that’s the case, his parents should have been put behind bars at the time for their abuse and neglect.
But even with Lucy Letby, I was instantly blaming her parents for that evil nurse’s actions, despite the fact that they looked like your regular John and Joan who clearly adore their daughter.

As I read into it, I presumed their overbearing, mollycoddling attitude meant they let their precious girl away with all sorts at home, to such an extent that she somehow turned into a real-life killer.
But this terrifying four-part TV drama about Jamie Miller has changed all that.
I realise how wrong I was.
Misogynist influencers
Adolescence may not be a true story, but it is based on real-life events and has made me realise I shouldn’t be so quick to judge, because some people — despite their amazing, balanced upbringing — can still go on to do the most horrendous things.
Jamie comes from your regular 2.4 children family unit, the kind anybody would be proud to be part of.
A mum and dad who have been together since their teens, who still kiss and cuddle in the kitchen and giggle and sing together and love going to the cinema and having a Chinese takeaway.
They are good, loving, honest, hard-working, decent people.
But, like millions of others, they didn’t realise what was happening to their son right under their noses.
How Jamie was craving affection and validation, but became isolated and retreated online to be swayed by social media and misogynist influencers.
It was awful to watch the aftermath.
His parents questioned why they ever bought him a computer, and to try to understand his actions, they even soul-searched right back to when he was at primary school, when they failed to defend him from bullies.
It made me imagine how the parents of real-life killers must feel when it happens to them.
What they don’t need when they are blaming themselves is people like me blaming them, too.
Gripping viewing
It was tough but gripping viewing, with so many lessons for us all.
Next time a crime like this undoubtedly occurs, I will see the parents in a different light and realise that what they actually deserve is pity and sympathy.
While grieving for that human being their son or daughter has killed, they are also dealing with the fact that their hopes and dreams for the future of their family have gone for ever.
They are coping with the reality that the child they created is a real-life killer.
And that is a life sentence in itself.

Challenging assumptions about infant memory, a novel functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) study shows that babies as young as 12 months old can encode memories, researchers report in a study published in Science. The findings suggest that infantile amnesia — the inability to remember our first few years of life — is more likely caused by memory retrieval failures rather than an inability to form memories in the first place.
Despite infancy being a period of rapid learning, memories from this time do not persist into later childhood or adulthood. In general, humans cannot recall events from the first three years of life. Why grown humans have a years-long blind spot in their episodic memory for the period of infancy remains a puzzle. One theory suggests this occurs because the hippocampus, a brain region crucial for episodic memory, is not fully developed during infancy.
In humans, infants demonstrate memory through behaviours such as conditioned responses, imitation, and recognition of familiar stimuli. However, whether these abilities rely on the hippocampus or other brain structures remains unclear. In a study using fMRI to scan the brains of infants aged about four to 25 months while performing a memory task, Tristan Yates from Columbia University, New York, and colleagues aimed to determine whether the hippocampus in infants can encode individual memories.
The memory task, adapted from a well-established method for adults, involved showing images to infants — faces, scenes, and objects — followed by a memory test based on preferential looking, all while undergoing neuroimaging. As per a release, the researchers show that the infant hippocampus has the capacity to encode memories of individual experiences beginning around one year of age, providing evidence that the capacity to form individual memories develops during infancy. According to the authors, the presence of encoding mechanisms for episodic memory during infancy — despite their ephemeral nature – suggests that infantile amnesia is more likely due to failures in memory retrieval mechanisms.
A couple in Texas have been arrested after allegedly shooting the father of their teenage son’s girlfriend after the parent said she was ‘too young’ to date.
Luther Madison II, 39, allegedly shot his son’s girlfriend’s father with a gun handed to him by his wife Angelica Madison, 39, during an argument in Hockley on March 18.
Luther and the girl’s father began arguing after the parents had arranged to meet to discuss keeping the couple’s son away from the victim’s daughter, Harris County Constable Mark Herman said on Facebook.
While the exact cause for the argument’s escalation is unknown, Herman said the victim’s had claimed their daughter was ‘too young to be dating.’
The parents had met at the Madison’s home in Hockley, just under an hour outside of Houston, before reports of gunshots were made to police.
According to Herman, a verbal and physical altercation broke out in the street and Angelica took a gun out of her pocket and gave it to her husband.
Luther then allegedly shot the victim in the chest and pointed the gun at the victim’s wife while threatening her.
Police arrived to find the victim with a gunshot wound to the chest and, according to Herman, he was airlifted to hospital.

‘Luther Madison II and Angelica Madison were arrested and booked into the Harris County Jail,’ Herman said.
‘Luther was charged with two counts of Aggravated assault with a Deadly Weapon. His total bond was set at $100,000.’
‘Angelica Madison was charged with one count of Aggravated Assault with a Deadly Weapon. Her bond was set at $25,000,’ Herman concluded.
The Madison’s both bonded out of jail and are due in court on May 20, according to court records.
It is unclear if they have entered a plea at this time.

Although the new remake makes numerous changes to Snow White’s story, some of these changes work in the movie’s favor. The 1937 film Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs provided little exposition to explain why the Evil Queen played such a big role in Snow’s life, but the remake very much goes out of its way to explain this.
From the very beginning of the film leading up to the events that culminate in Snow White’s ending, the titular princess takes a great deal of instruction from her parents in determining the kind of princess she wants to become. Unfortunately, that doesn’t mean her parents are actually present for most of the journey. And while most changes to the remake are culpable for the unending smorgasbord of Snow White’s controversies, the fate of her parents in the remake is typically less of a discussion topic despite making significant changes from the source material.

The live-action remake changes a few things about Snow White’s origins, but one thing it maintains is that her mother is no longer in her life at the time the main story begins. In the 1937 animated movie, Snow White’s mother is never actually mentioned at all. In the live-action remake, it’s established that Snow’s mom helped her learn how to rule fairly. The movie’s very first original song sets up that the kingdom’s rulers established a land in which each person grows their own bounty and shares any excess with their neighbors in the name of communal fairness.
While the overall plot of Disney’s Snow White follows the same arc as the 1937 original, 2025’s take on the character makes some big tweaks.
Walt Disney’s 1937 film does include one moment in which it very much seems as if Snow White might allude to the fates of her mother and father. Early on in Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, Snow White appears to empathize with a bird who’s lost its parents. However, she never actually follows this through by relating to the bird directly. Her empathy merely serves as a catalyst to make the Huntsman realize that the princess is too kind a person to brutally murder. When it comes to Snow’s father, however, the two movies diverge drastically.

This narrative builds as the movie continues. It initially seems as if this is setting up a Dumbo situation in which the live-action remake follows the original movie’s plot halfway before doing its own thing. However, Snow White learns while being given the poisoned apple that the Evil Queen already murdered her father. The seemingly happier ending that was promised turned out to be a lie, and now Snow has new motivation to confront her stepmother and seek retribution. It’s a sad turnabout, but it’s effective for those who didn’t see it coming.

Because of Disney’s place in the zeitgeist, Snow White’s negative reviews largely stem from comparisons to the 1937 film rather than comparisons to the actual fairy tale on which it’s based. But both versions of the film depart from the original story in several ways, not the least of which is that the Evil Queen wasn’t traditionally Snow White’s stepmother. In the 1812 version that popularized the story, the Queen was actually Snow White’s birth mom. It wasn’t until at least 1819 that the Grimms changed this because they became uncomfortable with making a character’s mother the primary villain.
Snow White holds a significant place in cultural history, pioneering the now-iconic franchise. Several actors have taken the mantle of acting Snow.
Interestingly enough, some versions also keep Snow White’s father alive. The most well-known version of the tale concludes with the Prince condemning the Queen to dance in hot iron shoes until she dies, but there are also versions in which Snow’s father returns from abroad to punish the Queen himself. Either of these versions would have obviously been too dark for the 2025 live-action remake of Snow White to incorporate, but it’s nice to know that there does exist a version in which the princess is reunited with at least one loving parent by the end.
