Rainnie, a 27-year-old Chinese woman in California, was desperate for her baby to arrive early after learning that US President Donald Trump’s executive order would revoke birthright citizenship for those born after February 19 – the day before her due date.

The executive order, signed on Trump’s first day back in the White House, directs agencies to deny recognition of citizenship for children born in the US after the cut-off date if neither parent is a US citizen or lawful permanent resident.

The US Department of State has estimated the figure is in the thousands, while the Centre for Immigration Studies, a think tank that advocates for lower immigration numbers, has estimated it is 20,000 or more.

Elliot Rush is Elon Musk’s 7-year-old half-brother and one of Errol Musk’s youngest children. He was born to Errol and Jana Bezuidenhout, Errol’s former stepdaughter and now his girlfriend. Jana, 38, is the daughter of Heide Bezuidenhout, who was Errol’s second wife.

In an interview with the Daily Mail, Errol made the surprising claim that China views Rush as a rising star in the gaming world. He even hosted a Chinese businessman at his South African ranch in connection with this alleged recruitment.  

“They say he will be the biggest thing in China. They say he’s a prolific gamer and a champion,” Errol stated, appearing unconcerned about the geopolitical implications of China’s interest in his son.

Additionally, Errol addressed right-wing influencer Ashley St Clair’s claim that she had given birth to Elon Musk’s child but refused to confirm or deny the allegation.

The crematorium will host a memorial service on March 26, at 6.30pm, where visitors can reflect on beloved relatives, with tea and coffee served after the service.

The manager, Lindsey Edwardson, said: “We will also provide cards which people can write personal messages on and then deposit in our Letters to Loved Ones memorial post box.

“We know, from feedback we’ve had since the memorial post box was installed, that the bereaved can take great comfort from posting messages to loved ones, and it helps them maintain a feeling of connection with them.”

The crematorium is welcoming anyone who wishes to remember their loved ones during the Mother’s Day period, regardless of whether there is a memorial to their mother or mother figure in the crematorium grounds, or where their funeral took place.

Ms Edwardson said: “Mother’s Day is one of those annual occasions when a loss can be felt more and we want to ensure people know that they are very welcome to take comfort in paying tribute to their loved ones at our crematorium.

“It can equally be a particularly difficult time for mothers who are bereaved of a child, and they are also extremely welcome to visit us.”

The crematorium also acknowledges that special days like Mother’s Day can prompt thoughts of purchasing a memorial in honour of a lost loved one.

New Delhi: Children of different age groups, including toddlers and preschoolers, suffer from anxiety, which severely affects their sleep patterns. Unfortunately, such children are unable to express their problems, including sleep disturbances, which signal underlying emotional distress.

Sleep is essential to support the growth and development of children. The frequent disruption in the sleep of the children in early stages can delay their growth and development.

Separation anxiety in children in the 1-3 age group can lead to bedtime resistance, night-wakings, and crying, while children from the age of 4 to 6 experience complex problems, including nightmares, sleepwalking, and sleep tremors.

Common sleep disruptions in children

Around 20-30% of children experience sleep problems due to anxiety. This can affect the brain development, emotional regulation, and learning capacity.

Dr Harshini Yerraballi, interventional pulmonologist and sleep specialist at Sleep Therapeutics Clinic, Kikapally, said, “Commonly, children in the lower age group feel the lack of parental attention and feeling for securedness would be missing for the children, which are the basic causes for sleep issues”.

When children have problems like tonsils or adenoids, sleep issues are bound to occur. This leads to the children suffering from interrupted sleep at night time, leading to long-term consequences on the personal and intellectual development of the children.

Sleep apnea in children

Sleep apnea or obstructive sleep apnea affects such children, and this condition results in the child’s stopping to breathe temporarily due to the blockage in the upper airways, due to enlarged tonsils and adenoids.

“Such children will breathe through their mouths at night time and will be characterized by snoring. They usually wake up multiple times during sleep. They will be dull at day time, lose focus on academics and extracurricular activities, and have memory issues. Another important impact is on the creativity of children due to lack of growth”, Dr Harshini added.

Reduce sugar intake, aerated drinks

Other factors for the anxiety among children include pressure and stress due to comparison with other children, lack of proper lifestyle including lack of physical activity, longer use of mobile phones, excessive consumption of chocolates, ice cream, and refined sugar.

Dr Harshini said that higher consumption of sugar at night can lead to sugar spikes, and children become restless and lose sleep.

“Children from class 1 to 7 also suffer from such challenges. The parents must ensure that children are screened for obstructive sleep patterns, follow sleep hygiene, avoid tea, coffee and aerated drinks, lower sugar intake and have good physical activity”, she said.

Drug use and mobile use affecting adolescents

Children in the adolescent age group suffer from similar issues faced by their younger counterparts, along with the use and abuse of drugs.

“Adolescents get used to consuming alcohol, smoking, dating and drugs at a very young age. Unfortunately some parents are in favour of such activities. Substance abuse can have a telling impact on the disrupted sleep pattern of this age group. Some may lose sleep due to hormonal changes, but appropriate intervention can help in overcoming the problem”, Dr Harshini said.

‘The recurring narrative that Justin is using hard drugs is absolutely not true,’ the rep said, adding that the performer is currently ‘in one of the best places in his life.’

The star is also ‘actively parenting his newborn son’ Jack with wife Hailey and putting focus into making new music.

According to the rep, Justin has had a ‘very transformative’ year and ‘ended several close friendships and business relationships that no longer served him.’

ARUNACHAL PRADESH: Desai Linggi, a 47-year-old woman from Roing in Arunachal Pradesh, has become a beacon of hope for abandoned and destitute children. Over the years, she has dedicated her life to caring for them, earning recognition from government agencies, public sector undertakings, NGOs and the local community.

From tending kids as a nursemaid, she now runs five institutions, a hostel, a school, a children’s home, a one-stop centre and an adoption agency, under the banner of the Nani Maria Society. Linggi’s empathy for abandoned children stems from her own difficult past.

Born into a broken family, she never experienced a stable home. Her parents separated three months before her birth, and by the time she was six, her father took her away, leading to a custody dispute. “I was given a choice to stay with either my mother or father. I chose my father, knowing my mother’s financial struggles,” she recalls.

But life with her father was not easy either. He remarried twice and she grew up in an emotionally fragmented household.

She pursued her education in two convent schools in Assam before returning to Roing. However, loneliness and instability affected her studies, and she failed twice in her Class 10 board exams. By then, her father had shut down his business due to financial losses, and she started working as a nursemaid at Divine Word School in Roing.

Seeing a lack of hostel facilities for toddlers, she decided to open one herself. “I love children, and that’s when I thought of starting a hostel,” she says. In 2000, she rented a piece of land and, with help from well-wishers, built Nani Maria Hostel using bamboo and other materials. It began with 25 children, and over the years, the numbers grew.

“I still remember a couple looking for a hostel. When they inquired, I confidently told them I was starting one. I didn’t have a building yet, so I showed them someone else’s house,” she admits. “When they asked about the fee, I randomly quoted Rs 5,000 per year. They immediately paid. That child is now a law graduate.”

The parent wished to remain anonymous. The student went through a series of transitions of classroom settings, which ultimately ended in suspensions and a transfer out of the district, the parent said.

Those issues began at the beginning of the child’s third grade year.

The parent says the district “rushed and pressured” her to switch her child from a 504 plan to a more dedicated IEP.

“So I signed the IEP, and my child went from a regular, traditional classroom into a ‘behavior’ classroom where the children were cussing at their one-on-one supports, kicking walls, hitting windows and my child was having panic attacks,” the parent said. “And the school was like, ‘Oh, no, that’s not a panic attack, that child is dangerous.’”

The child was “eloping,” a term used within special education to describe running out of the classroom and sometimes off campus grounds. This child received multiple suspensions for this behavior in the 2022-23 school year.

The student transferred into the specialized classroom less than a month before winter break. When returning to school, the mother was told her child’s classroom had “dissolved.”

The parent said they were was informed of the dissolution by an instructor and that no written documentation was provided, a claim the district disputes.

“They told me that there’s no appropriate place for your child. You have to home-school,” she said. “I have to physically go into work; I can’t work from home. I’m single and 100% financially responsible for all of my children, not just my special needs child, and so that wasn’t an option.”

The student was out of school for more than a month with their grandparent until the parent found a nonpublic placement.

“My child was not doing any schoolwork — nothing was provided to me for academics while I tried to find something else,” the parent added.

The student started at a nonpublic school the spring of that fourth grade year and quickly showed academic and social progress. The parent was happy with the placement and hoped the child would remain there.

The district requested her child come back for a new, “piloted” class in the child’s fifth grade year, the parent said.

That classroom was part of the Behavior Support Program at Brooks Elementary School, which serves students whose disabilities manifest as behaviors that affect both their ability to succeed in a classroom and may “influence the educational experience of other students,” Ryan said.

These classrooms were created at several campuses to provide an incidental and full-day support system for students who need help with deescalation and sensory and mood regulation, Ryan added.

Despite the parent persistently pushing back against the placement, the parent said they felt they had no choice.

When the child returned to Windsor and began at the new specialized class, the behaviors again worsened. The child was suspended repeatedly.

When the parent asked that the child receive one-on-one support, she said the district denied her requests.

The parent hired an attorney and made sure the child could transfer out of the district, return and remain at the nonpublic school, if the student wasn’t allowed to have an aide and attend general education courses in Windsor.

“I never was trying to sue anybody,” the parent said. “I was trying to fight for my child’s rights … I just felt like they had pushed me so fast into something I know nothing about, and I had no support.”

The group of parents began speaking with The Press Democrat in November 2023. Since those initial interviews, they’ve spoken out at Windsor Unified board meetings, written countless letters to the district’s special education leaders and called back to a request from 2021 that the district form a special education advisory group.

Some parents have met privately with board members. On Jan. 23, former Board President Malinalli López asked that a special education study session be conducted. Superintendent Jeremy Decker said a meeting could take place some time in the spring.

But a month later, on Feb. 20, Decker said he was “very hesitant” to have the meeting and was “struggling” to find a way it could be conducted without jeopardizing student confidentiality.

Trustee Rich Carnation suggested the group have a general meeting about policies and then meet with parents in closed session.

“Even though they’re individual (cases), they’re still going to have a lot of common …,” Carnation started, before Decker interjected.

“They will not have common threads, I promise you,” Decker said. “These are very individual decisions, there’s no commonality with the decision-making, it’s specific to the child, every single time.”

Decker did not say when the meetings would take place.

KOPPAL : Superstition has claimed the life of a seven-month-old baby at a village in Koppal district. The baby’s mother was arrested for allegedly killing the baby in the name of a blind belief.

During the postmortem, doctors found that the child was allegedly poisoned. It was reported that the child was sick from November and the mother visited many hospitals but in vain. Hence, the mother opted to perform puja for the baby’s health and some people told her that the baby should be burnt with incense sticks to come out of the ‘sin’, but the baby died after the practice.

The incident happened at a village near Kanakagiri town of Koppal district a few days ago and came to light after the Child Protection Cell officer filed a case against the mother of the deceased baby. There are many people in rural areas who still follow blind beliefs even today. Some villagers go for ‘burning treatments’ for liver and other stomach related diseases in these rural parts.

District administration and health officials have warned them that such beliefs will end in tragedy but still such incidents happen again and again.  

When the mother tried an incense stick burning method to treat the baby for a few days, the baby fell ill and was admitted to Koppal government hospital. The baby died later when it failed to respond to the treatment. 

When the doctors performed a postmortem, they came to know that it was due to poison. Koppal District Health and Family Welfare officer Dr T Lingaraju informed the Child Protection Cell and told them to file an FIR against the baby’s mother.An official from the Koppal Child Protection Cell said, “The postmortem report confirmed that the seven-month-old baby had been burnt with incense sticks and the poison claimed the baby’s life.”

“In this context, an FIR has been registered on the basis of a complaint filed by Prashanth, an official from the Child Protection Unit. We have been creating awareness in both rural and urban areas and many people have also become aware but still some people follow superstitions which kill innocent people,” the official added.
