The bond between a father and son is a landscape of unspoken words, shared silences, and the echoing footsteps of inherited traits. It’s a relationship that can be both a source of profound strength and a delicate, often fraught, dance of expectations. The Mehta Boys captures this complex dynamic with a raw, unflinching honesty, which is also perhaps the most striking element of the film.

It explores complexities, unspoken tensions, and silent moments of love and understanding that families knit together, and in doing so, it does not shy away from the messy, sticky realities of family, but instead it stays comfortably away from idealistic portrayals of parenthood or childhood. This genuineness is the strength of The Mehta Boys and hence it feels real, and not even a bit ‘filmy’! I am positive that many fathers and sons must identify with the characters, their struggles, triumphs, and vulnerabilities.

Much before Boman Irani, Bollywood’s beloved powerhouse performer, decided to step behind the camera and deliver this incredibly impactful directorial debut, the endearing yet often complex father-son relationship has been explored a few times before.

From Ivan Turgenev’s Fathers and Sons, which is a Russian novel that explores the generational clash between fathers and their radical sons in 19th-century Russia, to The Pursuit of Happyness (2006), where Will Smith and his son deliver a heartfelt story about resilience and the sacrifices that a father makes for his child. While in my memory the sweetest story of a dad going to incredible lengths to find his son is Finding Nemo (2003), Bollywood too has explored the push and pull between fathers and sons, and we’ve seen it all. From the picture-perfect, ‘yes-dad’ son like Heera Thakur in Sooryavansham, to the son who toes the line but has his own mind, like Shah Rukh Khan in Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham, and even the son who completely breaks free, like Rajat Barmecha in Udaan, these films show just how varied and complicated that relationship can be.

It is believed that a father-son relationship can be tricky because it often involves complex dynamics like differing expectations, generational gaps, communication challenges, and the need to navigate both dependence and independence, making it a relationship that can experience tension and conflict at times. Fathers and sons may have different values, perspectives, and approaches to life due to their age gap, leading to misunderstandings.

Sometimes, they struggle to openly express their emotions, leading to bottled-up feelings and difficulty resolving conflicts. A son might feel pressure to live up to his father’s expectations, while a father may struggle to balance being supportive with providing necessary guidance.

Coming back to the film under discussion, The Mehta Boys marks 65-year-old Irani’s debut as a screenwriter and director. The endearing drama about a father-son relationship stars Irani as the septuagenarian Mehta, with Avinash Tiwary (Sikander Ka Muqaddar) who plays his son Amay. Interestingly and sadly, Irani has no personal experience of a relationship with his dad, because his father died six months before he was born.

“I don’t think I would have made this movie the way I wanted at 50,” he says in an interview. “You need to get a little more out of life and experience some frustration too. It took me time to write it, cast it, make it.”

Boman heard about a certain jagged father-son relationship that had a compelling airport moment and roped in co-writer Alexander Dinelaris (of Birdman fame) to explore this edgy relationship between Shiv Mehta and Amay and that leaves a grave impact. That airport moment has been captured in a beautiful scene in the film. Who knew that beneath the charismatic performer we’ve admired for so long lay a maestro of storytelling? Boman Irani has surprised us all, and in the best possible way.

Things work out in a way that Shiv has to spend two days with his city-slicker son Amay and address the divisions. Shiv is a Gujarati speaking Parsi, set in his own ways like anybody else his age. He loves coaching cricket, his type-writer and his Sunil-Gavaskar-signed bat displayed on the wall in his room. He loves his daughter but his relationship with his son is awkward. He refuses to accept a helping hand and treats son Amay as if he is the neighbour’s son, just with polite civility. He holds on to the hand-break when Amay drives while there is nothing wrong with Amay’s driving, he checks his son’s architectural abilities with a mason, turns off extra lights, and in short doesn’t for some reason offer the validation and love every son needs.

On the other side, Amay feels unvalidated, unloved, and that his father makes fun of his work and lifestyle in Mumbai. Both Irani and Tiwary are at the top of their craft and complement each other throughout the film.

The performances under Irani’s immaculate direction makes this film so relatable. It doesn’t matter who you are – parent, kid, somewhere in between – you’ll find something that clicks and connects. Your parents have bound to have done something that Shiv does or you may connect and identify with Amay. The Mehta Boys, speaks to those universal family experiences around generational gaps, unspoken expectations, the longing for connection at the heart of every parent-child relationship, how sometimes there are communication difficulties and misunderstandings in families, and how the importance of empathy and forgiveness are forgotten or cast aside.

Without resorting to melodrama or over-sentimentality that films in the subcontinent thrive on, Irani allows emotions to emerge from the story and characters as they organically would from in a realistic situation. Watching these characters, you feel drawn to them and get invested in their journey. As you laugh and cry with them, feel their pain and anxiety, you begin to reflect on the relationships around you. What is rampant and what is amiss? You cannot help but want this father and son to a find common ground and learn to accept each other as whoever they are and carry on living their lives together. Long after the credits roll, you feel that your soul stirred and you remain connected to the Mehta family, wondering how many families had or have or will have similar journeys.

A great fan of Irani’s comedy and acting, I did not expect the direction to be at this super-sensitive level. He has almost mastered this craft too, and this is only his debut. If you like a mix of quirky, eccentric and realistic characters, if you like films that prove that a beautiful film can be made without spending trillions, without using song, dance, item numbers, vulgarity, sensationalism and objectification, this one is for you.

The simple but powerful story about enduring and endearing relationships that is bound to evoke memories of bonds in life, resonating in a deep, meaningful and soulful way. It is visually captivating even though there are no panoramic landscapes, it is mostly shot indoors, but Irani makes sure the frames are engaging throughout the film.

The Mehta Boys reminds us of the power that cinema has to connect us to other human beings and make us reflect on how complex our bonds with people are. At its core, the film is all about that convoluted and complicated dad-son thing, but it shows how easy it is to miss what’s really being said, how pride and ego can get in the way, but also how it’s never too late to try and understand each other. It’s like, sometimes love doesn’t look like what you expect. It can be tough, even harsh, but it’s still love at the end of the day. The film makes one think about how we need to cherish those family ties, and maybe try to see past the surface, before it’s too late. There are many instances in the film where Irani as Shiv, or Tiwari as Amay, share a look, a silence, that demonstrates how just that much can say a lot, especially between a father and son, and how those little things can cause so much trouble if we don’t pay attention. Just like the Mehta family members sometimes we struggle to express their emotions openly, we bottle up our feelings or skirmish around them, not realising that at times even small attempts at communication can bridge the gap and lead to healing.

The film that has won the People’s Choice Award for Best Fiction Feature, at the 2024 Chicago South Asian Film Festival, also showcases the acting talent of the famous cricketer Kapil Dev too.

In a world where everything’s loud and flashy, The Mehta Boys is like a breath of fresh air. It’s quiet, but it hits you deep. It’s about those real connections, the ones that matter. It reminds you how beautiful, and fragile, family can be, and how love always finds a way. We need more films like this, films that stay with you.

Jessica toted her essentials in a small quilted black handbag and accentuated her stunning features with a glossy make-up palette.

Meanwhile, British actress Sienna, 43, looked as stylish as ever as she sported yet another elegant ensemble during PFW.

Sienna gave a flash of her toned midriff in a cropped black satin waistcoat, which she styled with a pair of white low-rise jeans.

She completed her look with a pair of black heeled boots and carried a black handbag over one shoulder as she arrived at the dinner.

Sienna was joined by her partner Oli Green, 28, and the couple looked as loved-up as ever as they arrived hand-in-hand.

Oli, who Sienna shares a daughter with, cut a casual figure in a green shirt and black jeans, which he styled with a leather look jacket and brown boots.

Alexa Chung, who is in a relationship with Sienna’s ex Tom Sturridge, was also in attendance at the event.

Sienna and Alexa are on very good terms and once again rubbed shoulders at the star-studded event.

For the occasion, Alexa, 41, put on a leggy display in a black mini dress and a dramatic white fluffy jacket.

She added to her frame with a pair of pointed black heels and let her outfit do all the talking as she kept her accessories minimal. 

Alexa and Sienna’s ex Tom went public with their romance in July 2022 when they attended day seven of the Wimbledon Championships. 

Tom and Sienna previously dated for four years and split in 2015. They are still on good terms, with Sienna calling Tom her ‘best friend’ whilst they co-parent their daughter Marlowe, 12.

Sienna and her new partner Oli have been seen enjoying double dates with Alexa and Tom on numerous occasions as they all remain very close friends.

Sienna has given her seal of approval for her ex and Alexa and in December told Vogue UK: ‘I’m really happy for them. It’s genuinely lovely.’

The Layer Cake actress even joked about their co-parenting situation and revealed that their daughter Marlowe has brought one of Alexa’s jumpers home, which she has since claimed for herself. Sienna quipped: ‘I’ve got one upstairs!’

Following their split in 2015, it was claimed Sienna and Tom had different goals. A source said: ‘Tom wanted to get married and have more children. Sienna didn’t.’

Last year, Alexa and Tom sparked engagement speculation when they were seen wearing matching rings.

Meanwhile, Sienna and Oli welcomed their first child together last year after they started dating in 2022.

A 24-year-old man is going viral for his response to a “non-negotiable” when it comes to a potential wedding with his girlfriend of two and a half years. 

The man took to Reddit’s “Am I the A——” forum to ask for opinions on whether he was in the wrong for his take on the situation he found himself in after discussing marriage with his partner. 

In the post titled “AITA (am I the a——) for not following my gf’s parents demand about our wedding,” the poster prefaced that his girlfriend’s parents, specifically the mother, is “very religious,” in that she attends church every Sunday and “follows all the rules.”

He wrote in the post that his girlfriend “goes to church every so often but isn’t that religious,” then pointed out where he stands himself, saying “I, on the other hand, can count the amount of times I’ve been in a church on both my hands and none of those times were for a traditional service, mostly funerals and like one wedding.” 

Describing himself as “not religious at all,” the boyfriend said that he doesn’t want religion “forced” on him but doesn’t hold anything against those that are religious. 

In bringing up the topic of marriage with his ‘pretty serious’ girlfriend, he referred to her parents’ wishes for the couple to be married in a church as a “hiccup”

“I would need to go through all the steps to get confirmed,” he wrote. “I looked into the process and since I would have to start from scratch, it would take 8-10 months for this to happen.” 

The man argued that this “makes no sense for me to do this for something her nor I really care about. If it could be done in less than a month, I wouldn’t care so much. I have even told her I’m fine with the service being in a church and even going as far as having a religious-style wedding.” 

When it came to the girlfriend’s say in it all, the poster claimed that she stands firm that the parents have already made up their minds. “She has said there is no sense in trying to convince them otherwise ‘cause they won’t budge, and won’t even try to back me to try and stay on their good sides.” 

“They are born and raised NY/NJ Italians, so it makes sense there’s no changing their minds,” he went on in the post. “Am I the a—— for putting my foot down on not doing all this since it would be our wedding and neither of us care about all this?”

Commenters did not hold back on sharing their opinions on the user’s situation. 

“Ok, so they ‘demand.’ Tell them no.” One user commented, continuing with, “She needs to grow a backbone. She’s 24 years old. It’s time to stand up.”

“NTA,” meaning “not the a——,” the user continued, “But here’s the thing. You are going to be setting a precedent by caving in, if you do. You will be sending a direct message that you will fold like a chair if you do this.” 

Similarly, another comment read, “NTA. But you should not be marrying this woman, at least not yet. She seems unable to put the necessary boundaries between your new family (you and her right now), and her old family. If she lets them get away with this, what will be next? Will they be naming the future baby?”

“NTA but have that discussion NOW,” said another user. 

One commenter contributed their take on the girlfriend’s intentions, writing, “Your gf cares about her family approving of her marriage and taking part in her wedding. She may not care that you’re not catholic, but you’re mistaken in saying neither of you care.”

A lot is made of the pregnant body.

Hell, there’s an understatement. From Maggie Nelson’s pregnancy being literally saluted in an airport by serving military personnel in The Argonauts, to the comic horror of Arnold Schwarzenegger in Junior, the iconic pose of Demi Moore on the cover of Vanity Fair to the simple, prosaic act of balancing a sausage roll on your bump, we are transfixed, revolted, overwhelmed and otherwise provoked by the temporary largeness and hardness of gestating bodies.

But what about the postpartum body? What about my postpartum body? How am I supposed to travel across this new landscape of my skin? The sinking mudflat of my stomach, the pendulous lava flow of my breasts, the foothills of my new large thighs or the sand dune shifting of my chin? Oh, I know what I’m supposed to say: I’m supposed to say that I celebrate my softness. I am expected to cry loudly and confidently about the miracle my body has just performed; to talk about how I take strength from the incredible thing it did; to pay homage and gratitude for the new life, family and future it has delivered me.

Which is all well and good, until you’re standing naked on your bedroom carpet, and somehow every leaking corner, every enveloped edge, every thickened limb does not feel like yourself. I am not thinking of this body as “good” or “bad” but I am thinking of it, I’m afraid, as “other”. Other to me, other to how I move and live and occupy physical space. In this moment, looking down at my recently revealed toes, I don’t know myself.

Obviously, Western capitalism has an answer: for about £20,000 I could book myself in for a so-called “Mummy Makeover” right now, here, in London. It could include breast augmentation, an abdominoplasty (tummy tuck), liposuction, a thigh lift, brachioplasty (an arm lift) and labia minora reduction. That’s right; I could employ a private surgeon to reconfigure my body from the vulva outwards. According to at least one website, I’d be able to have sex four weeks afterwards, wear a bra after six weeks and even have a shower the next day, in hospital. But I can tell you right now, I don’t think any of that would make this body feel like my body again. If anything, it would alienate me further from my physical existence, only now I’d have new scars and no money to do up my kitchen at the end of it.

The grieving father of a schoolboy who was stabbed to death five years ago has offered to take part in a Government-backed campaign in our schools to highlight the dangers of knife crime.

Abdul Raguragui – whose 18-year-old son Azzam died after he was attacked in a south Dublin park in 2019 – spoke out after an 11-year-old boy was stabbed in a school on the north side of the capital this week.

This shocking incident is the latest in a series of recent high-profile stabbings, including the fatal and unprovoked attack on an asylum seeker in Dublin’s South Anne Street last month. Mr Raguragui said he was also left ‘heartbroken’ following the fatal stabbing of an eight-year-old girl in New Ross, Co. Wexford, last December.

After his son’s killing, Mr Raguragui said he had called for a nationwide school campaign highlighting the dangers of knife crime. This echoed similar pleas from the parents of Cork student Cameron Blair, who was stabbed to death just six-months after Azzam was fatally attacked. Mr Raguragui believes recent stabbings could have been prevented if political leaders had heeded their calls.

In a direct plea to new Justice Minister Jim O’Callaghan, he said: ‘This is your opportunity now.’

He told the Extra.ie: ‘We have a good opportunity now because of the new Minister for Justice who has a strong understanding of knife crime. I hope he will address this issue. I remember he [O’Callaghan] rang me probably four or five years ago, and he was active on this issue.

SIMILAR CAMPAIGN TO DRINK DRIVING

‘This is his opportunity now. The increase of [maximum] sentences [for knife crime] from five to seven years was good, but we need more now because we are not feeling safe.’ Mr Raguragui said he and his wife face fresh heartbreak any time they hear of another stabbing. Alongside a school awareness programme, he said ‘we also need a campaign similar to drink driving’.

He said he would be willing to be part of any such campaign ‘if it will help prevent further attacks’, adding: ‘I want to prevent others from experiencing what we have experienced. I feel we, as victims, can play a role to help children [not carry knives].’ He believes this would be ‘more powerful than teachers standing up and talking to’ students.

‘We have to do programmes to educate the new generation,’ he said. ‘If we don’t speak to kids now, tomorrow it will be on your street.

‘Every time we hear of a stabbing, we feel new pain, and we need it to stop.’ Figures supplied by former justice minister Helen McEntee last year showed the number of knives seized by gardaí rose by nearly 60 per cent over the previous decade.

A total of 1,341 knives were seized in 2013, rising to more than 2,100 last year despite tougher sentences for knife-related crimes that came into effect in September. The parents of Cameron Blair, who was stabbed to death in an unprovoked attack in January 2020, previously called for a Government-backed schools’ campaign to be rolled out.

Noel and Kathy Blair held a face-to-face meeting with then-acting justice minister Heather Humphreys and her officials in 2021, shortly after the grieving parents gave an emotional interview to Extra.ie in which they called for a new approach to tackle knife crime, including a graphic campaign in secondary schools and a more effective sentencing regime for convicted offenders.

SIGNIFICANT DROP

The former director of the multi-award-winning Scottish Violence Reduction Unit this weekend agreed with Mr Raguragui and the Blair family that pre-emptive intervention is key. After Niven Rennie made similar comments to Extra.ie in 2020 in the wake of Azzam Raguragui’s killing, then government TD and now Minister for State Neale Richmond called for a similar unit to be set up.

Mr Rennie’s approach was credited for a significant drop in Scotland’s homicide rates.

He stressed going down the same road of solely enforcement and punishment has ‘never worked’, telling Extra.ie: ‘This is merely one indicator of wider problems in society and the road to redemption is dealing with the causes rather than reacting to the violence.’ However, Minister O’Callaghan yesterday appeared to rule out a Government-backed campaign to highlight the dangers of knife crime.

In response to queries from Extra.ie, the Department of Justice said: ‘Increasing awareness of knife carrying in a community by young people through campaigns or amnesties can create feelings of insecurity and lead to an increase in the number of young people carrying knives. An Garda Síochána will continue their proactive measures to tackle this issue, including their assault reduction strategy, which is targeted at tackling all types of assaults in public, including the use of knives. This strategy is informed by a pro-arrest, early investigation and proactive high-visibility approach.’

A spokesman said the Minister ‘strongly condemns the use of knives to threaten, intimidate or harm others’, adding: ‘The Government is committed to ensuring communities are safe and tackling knife crime is an important element of that. There are no quickfix solutions to tackling knife crime. Long-term, evidence-based strategies are needed that address knife crime as part of a wider strategic response to anti-social behaviour, street violence, youth offending and domestic violence.’

The Department insisted there is ‘a comprehensive and robust legal framework’ currently in place to combat knife crime. He added: ‘The maximum penalty for the offences of possession of a knife with the intention of unlawfully intimidating or injuring another person, trespassing with a knife, and producing a knife while committing or appearing to be about to commit an offence, increased from five years to seven years imprisonment.

DOUBLED THE MAXIMUM PENATLY

‘The maximum penalty for the offence of manufacturing, importing, selling, hiring or lending offensive weapons increased from seven years to 10 years.’ The Department spokesman also said the Government has doubled the maximum penalty for ‘assault causing harm’ under Section 3 of the Non-Fatal Offences Against the Person Act 1997, from five to 10 years imprisonment, in 2023.

Meanwhile, the father of the 11-year-old boy stabbed in the schoolyard this week said it is ‘a miracle’ his son survived.

Stephen Geraghty said the knife missed one of his son Mason’s arteries by just a couple of centimetres and he was initially told his son had a 50/50 chance of surviving. ‘I thought I was saying goodbye,’ he told Virgin Media.

However, he said the schoolboy was ‘doing really well’ after undergoing emergency surgery, adding: ‘I don’t know where he gets the strength from.’

Hailey Bieber sent internet into a meltdown with a rare snap of her and Justin Bieber’s baby, Jack.

To mark the International Women’s Day 2025 on Saturday, March 8, the Rhode Skin founder turned to her Instagram handle to shared a never-before-seen photograph of her little one.

The two-slide post featured adorable snaps of the 28-year-old American model embracing little Jack in her arms as he placed his tiny hands on her face.

Justin and Hailey’s little bundle of joy was seen dressed in a light blue shirt with a red knitted beanie covering his head.

However, the snaps did not feature the little guy's face.

In the beautiful snaps, the socialite radiated charm in minimal makeup that accentuated her gorgeous features. She also wore a straw hat, as the snaps appeared to be taken on a beach.

As soon as Hailey Bieber shared the adorable photographs, the fans quickly flooded the post with heartwarming comments as they gushed over baby Jack.

“You guys deserve nothing but happiness and love. I'm happy you're living everything you deserve,” penned one.

LINCOLN, Neb. (KOLN/Gray News) – Family members believe human remains found in Nebraska belong to a husband and father who went missing in November 2023.

Authorities are investigating after human remains were discovered Saturday morning near Highway 77 and West Pioneers Boulevard in Lincoln, Nebraska, KOLN reports.

Chief Deputy Ben Houchin of the Lancaster County Sheriff’s Office said a person walking their dog found the man’s body, which appeared to have “been there a while.” Authorities were contacted at approximately 9:42 a.m. Houchin added that the body was in a wooded area and appeared to have been there for over a year.

The remains were found less than 1,000 yards from the home of Tyler Goodrich, a husband and father of two who was 35 when he went missing in November 2023.

“Based off of details at the scene, including the location and proximity to Tyler Goodrich’s last known location, investigators have been in contact with Mr. Goodrich’s family,” wrote the sheriff’s office in a press release.

Officials are treating the death as suspicious but not as a homicide.

“We are not identifying 100% who the individual is. We still have investigating and the autopsy to go,” Houchin said.

While officials have not yet confirmed the identity, Tyler Goodrich’s family met with investigators Saturday. His father, Lonnie Goodrich, said he believes the body they found is his son.

“It’s Tyler. It’s Tyler. It’s Tyler. They were all his tattoos. Hair color was the same. It’s Tyler. He has been found,” he said.

Investigators have had few leads in the search for Tyler Goodrich, other than a short surveillance video showing him running from his home after a tense talk about divorce with his husband, Marshall Vogel.

“For 16 and a half months, I’ve prayed every night,” Lonnie Goodrich said. ”I stood at my door, asking him to come up the driveway. I prayed that we would get information, and at least today, we got that one piece.”

An autopsy of the remains is scheduled for Monday morning. The sheriff’s office plans to provide any new details on the investigation during its regular Monday press briefing at 9:30 a.m.

According to the sheriff’s office, the area where the body was found was previously searched for Tyler Goodrich. It had been marked off on the GIS map created by Lincoln Parks and Recreation.
