‘I forgive no one,’ grief-stricken father of murder victim tells sentencing hearing

Daryl Bishop struggles to forgive the man who shot and killed his son Alexander Bishop in Saint John more than two years ago.

At times, he feels he should forgive Zakkary Reed, 32, he said.

But he is angry and tormented.

“This was not an accident,” he told Reed’s sentencing hearing in Saint John Court of King’s Bench on Friday.

    “My son cannot be replaced.”

Zakkary Reed, 32, is on trial for first-degree murder in the Aug. 20, 2023 death of Alexander Bishop, 38.

Reed was sentenced to life in prison with no chance of parole for at least 25 years after a jury found him guilty Jan. 30 of first-degree murder in the death of Bishop, 38.

Testifying in his own defence, Reed admitted shooting Bishop in the chest on Aug. 20, 2023, but claimed it was in self-defence.

Bishop was pronounced dead at the scene, an apartment at 170 King St. East.

    Never got to say goodbye

A “precious life” has been stolen from the Bishop family, including Bishop’s eight-year-old son, said Daryl Bishop.

“I struggle to prepare myself with the words to tell my grandson … where his daddy is now,” he said, choking back tears, while Reed, sitting in the prisoner’s box, kept his eyes downcast, showing no emotion.

There will be no father-son fishing trips for his grandson, no opportunity to have his father coach his soccer team, Bishop noted.

“I’ve had times when I cried myself to sleep because I was not able to tell him goodbye, that I love him,” he said.

“All I can do now is take my son a large double double [coffee] to his grave while I talk to him and look at him in pictures,” he said.

“I am and have been devastated by this senseless murder. For this, I forgive no one.”

Justice is ‘a joke,’ Reed says

Before sentence was imposed, Reed stood and told the court the idea that justice was being served was “a joke.”

“It’s only more loss,” he said, referring to his daughter “losing” her father and his parents “losing” their son, as his mother, doubled over in the front row of the courtroom, sobbed.

“A life behind bars is no life to live,” Reed said. “If anything Alex got the better end of the deal,” said Reed.

“So I’ll  just leave the court with — victims, aren’t we all.”

Loss of life ‘immeasurable and unbearable’

Justice Kathryn Gregory told the court that Reed, “after having texted his girlfriend of his intent to shoot Alex Bishop in the chest with a shotgun … did precisely that.” He shot him at close range, while under a court order prohibiting him from possessing any firearms, she said.

The loss of a life is “immeasurable and unbearable,” Gregory said.

“This explains why such a loss of life by a planned and deliberate murder justifies the maximum sentence in law,” she said, referring to first-degree murder carrying an automatic life sentence with no possibility of parole for 25 years.

With credit for the time he has already spent in custody, Crown prosecutor Elaina Campbell said he will have to serve 23 years and 157 days before becoming eligible for parole.

Gregory noted Reed refused to participate in the interview process required for a pre-sentence report, so none was prepared.

She also imposed a lifetime weapons prohibition order, ordered Reed to provide a DNA sample, and to have no direct or indirect contact with members of the Bishop family.

In addition, she sentenced Reed to one year, which will be served concurrently, for being in possession of firearm while prohibited from doing so.

    Trial heard from eyewitness

The jury heard from 32 witnesses during the trial, which lasted about three weeks and included several delays, most of them caused by Reed.

He was the only defence witness.

Reed told the court that he was homeless in August 2023 and Bishop, who also didn’t have a place of his own, had invited him to crash at a friend’s place.

Under direct examination, Reed testified he was arguing with Bishop when Bishop stepped toward him, pointed a handgun at his face and yelled, “Let’s do this.”

“I felt like he was going to shoot me,” Reed told the jury. “I was scared for my life. … I didn’t think I was going to make it out of there alive. So I reached down in my luggage that was there and pulled the gun … and I shot him before he could shoot me.”

Hanna Graham, 24, who described Reed as her best friend and former boyfriend, witnessed the shooting. She testified that she was on acid that night and doesn’t remember much. Everyone in the apartment that night was doing drugs, including meth and fentanyl, the jury heard.

Graham said she was in a back room of the apartment with Bishop when the door flew open and Reed entered. He was “about two feet away” when he immediately shot Bishop without saying anything, she said.

Graham was “trying to hold [Bishop’s] chest together,” but he died. “I felt his heart stop beating in my hand.”

Bishop’s wound measured about four by five centimetres and resulted in “significant” blood loss, according to the pathologist who conducted the autopsy.

Police responded to a 911 call shortly after 5:30 a.m.

Reed was arrested within four hours. Members of the Saint John Police Force’s emergency tactical services team pulled over a cab that Reed was riding in.

Swabs taken from Reed’s hands tested positive for gunshot residue.

Reed’s DNA was found in several places on a sawed-off shotgun that police recovered in an alley behind the apartment building, including the trigger, trigger guard and hammer, the jury heard.

A hoodie that tested positive for Reed’s DNA also tested positive for Bishop’s blood.

In his statement to police, Reed changed his story several times, the jury heard.

At first, Reed denied even knowing the victim and said he wasn’t anywhere near the crime scene at the time of the shooting.

Eventually, he told lead investigator Det. Const. Duane Squires that he was there and that Bishop pointed a gun at him, but he repeatedly denied that he shot him or that he even had a weapon.

  • Distraught mother forced to fundraise for toddler’s £119K medical flight after travel insurance ‘nightmare’

Distraught mother forced to fundraise for toddler’s £119K medical flight after travel insurance ‘nightmare’

    [ad_1]

A distraught mother is warning parents to be vigilant when buying travel insurance after a dream holiday ended up a “living nightmare” when her 19-month-old daughter suffered a brain haemorrhage.

Natasha Sargent, 31, has been forced to fundraise for a private medical flight costing £119,000 to take her daughter Sienna-Rose home to the UK from Mexican holiday spot Cancun following the ordeal.

The mother-of-three from Croxteth, near Liverpool, said she took out insurance for the family using a comparison website, but she admitted that due to an “honest mistake” on her daughter’s medical records it was rendered invalid.

“I thought I had done it correctly; it was an honest mistake. You don’t ever think you would be in this situation,” she told The Independent.

Ms Sargeant said she was on holiday in the tropical paradise with her partner Liam Millen, 39, and children Harry, 13, Liam, 11, when the toddler suddenly collapsed when playing with her brothers.

Sienna-Rose was rushed to three different hospitals before doctors gave her life-saving surgery to remove part of the clotting. A blood clot remains in the left part of her brain and it is unknown what caused the haemorrhage.

The toddler is currently being treated in Cancun General Hospital, where she has been for over a week, and awaiting a medical flight home. However, without insurance the family have been left to fundraise to pay the costly medical bill.

Now, Ms Sargeant is warning others to “triple check” their medical records and make sure details are “spot on” before getting medical cover.

“We did take a policy out on a comparison website, but she had numerous hospital visits for jaundice and bronchitis from when she was a baby and we didn’t disclose all the dates, so the insurance was invalid,” she said.

Ms Sargeant, who works as a healthcare assistant, said Sienna-Rose “was completely fine” when they flew out last week, but five days into the holiday she collapsed and vomited about 50 times in the space of two hours before they could get any help.

“We rushed around trying to get her to different hospitals. Eventually she had a CT scan which revealed she had a brain haemorrhage,” Ms Sargeant said.

“Doctors said her brain had swollen and there was a lot of fluids, so she needed emergency surgery.”

Describing the ordeal as “horrendous”, Ms Sargeant said Sienna-Rose had deteriorated badly following her operation and was suffering with fevers.

“The first day after the operation, she was fine, she was drinking, and we were going to start weaning her back on food. Then, the next day she took a bad turn and just hasn’t been the same since,” she said.

Only one person is allowed to visit Sienna-Rose at a time, meaning the parents have been taking it in turns to sit by her bedside, while the other looks after their son’s.

However, on one occasion Ms Sargeant was refused entry into the hospital because she was wearing “flip flops” and “holiday clothes”.

“They refused me entry into the hospital, they said I needed to buy some clothes first. It was horrendous, I was crying and begging them to let me in and see her,” she said.

Sienna-Rose, who is not fit to fly commercially, is set to take an 11-hour flight back to the UK with an air ambulance on Saturday after Ms Sargeant fundraised almost £150,000 on gofundme.

Lia’s Wings, a UK charity which helps arrange air ambulance transfers for children, also donated £20,000 to the cause and is now helping coordinate the transfer and will oversee Sienna-Rose’s integration back to NHS care.

The charity said this money is set to be used to pay for the £119,000 medical flight home and pay for the medical bills in Mexico.

“When we got the quote, I thought we would have to stay out here for a couple of months until she was fit to fly. I thought we would never get that money together,” Ms Sargeant said.

“It’s crucial we get on that medical flight because if there were any more problems it could put her in danger. I am nervous for the flight because anything could happen,” she added.

A Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO) Spokesperson said: “We are supporting the family of a British national in hospital in Mexico and are in touch with the local authorities.”

  • Parents spark outrage after asking for TIPS to cover kids’ birthday party costs

Parents spark outrage after asking for TIPS to cover kids’ birthday party costs

    [ad_1]

If you already feel that tipping is creeping into all parts of your life, then be prepared for the next infiltration – kid’s birthday parties.

In a now viral video posted to social media, professional baker Victoria Perry explained that guests at kids’ parties are now expected to leave a tip for parents – and ‘if you’re not bringing at least $10, you should not bring your child.’

Although the baker herself doesn’t feel as though this is necessary, she noted that several of her clients have shown her the invitations for their child’s birthday parties, and many of them have asked for a tip.

‘On those invitations, at least three that I’ve seen so far, there is a little spot on the bottom that says “tipping is encouraged,”‘ she shared.

She shared one note, which read: ‘If you plan to bring your child and they plan to eat and play, please send along cash with your child for the tip bucket to go towards party expenses.’

‘How are we feeling about this?’ she asked, before sharing she thinks it’s ‘not appropriate.’

Users were outraged at the idea of inviting children to a birthday party – and expecting their parents to foot the bill.

‘Don’t throw the party if you can’t afford the party,’ declared one user.

Professional baker Victoria Perry explained that guests at kids’ parties are now expected to leave a tip for parents – and ‘if you’re not bringing at least $10, you should not bring your child’

‘What?!? You bring a gift to the party. That’s the whole point. They throw a party with food and drinks and you bring a gift,’ one astonished user wrote.

‘Abso-frigging-lutely NOT,’ someone else wrote. ‘There are plenty of low cost options you can choose that are still wonderful for littles. During Covid when we weren’t allowed to have parties we went toboganning with our daughter and friends and brought hot chocolate and donuts. It cost me $20 and she said it was her best party ever.’

Another wrote that if they’re bringing a tip, then they’re ‘not bringing a present.’

‘My RSVP would be a NO. If you need to be tipped for hosting your child’s party, maybe don’t have a party,’ advised another.

Recently, an old post went viral after children were invited to a party at Build-A-Bear – but asked to give their bears to the birthday girl after.

The story, which was originally shared to Reddit, resurfaced and went viral on TikTok with furious users chiming in with their thoughts.

TikTok user Unplugged Moments, who often shares wild stories she finds on Reddit, delved into a story about the controversial kid’s party, explaining it was originally posted by an aunt who was taking her seven-year-old niece to attend.

Labeling the party as ‘pretty straightforward,’ the woman picked up her niece and took her to mall to go to Build-A-Bear. Afterwards, they were to meet at the birthday girl’s house for cake and ice cream.

‘On the invite, it said, [every] child will be able to build a Build-A-Bear,’ she explained.

‘So I told my niece, “let’s be mindful, keep it at $35, and then anything else aunty will chip in for at my own expense.”‘

The party had been going smoothly, and the mom of the birthday girl paid for everything, with the aunt noting she paid for anything extra her niece purchased.

The group snapped a pic, before the mom said, ‘Okay, thank you everyone, but if you could now hand your bear over the Sarah, thank you so much for building a personal bear so that Sarah can remember you by.’

Recalling that everyone at the party was visibly shocked by this, the woman admitted she didn’t know whether she was entitled to think the kids would be keeping the bear, deciding to leave the party, with the other moms and kids following suit.

  • Coheed And Cambria The Father Of Make Believe Review

Coheed And Cambria The Father Of Make Believe Review

    [ad_1]

Throughout their storied career, Coheed and Cambria have created literal worlds with their music, weaving epic stories throughout nine full length albums and a galaxy of comics and novels. They’ve managed to find staying power throughout countless trends and eras of music, maintaining their cult following for two decades. They’ve even created their own cruise. They’ve nearly done it all, but throughout their storied career, they have yet to write an album quite like The Father of Make Believe. Comprised of fourteen catchy-as-hell, explosive and genre-bending songs, The Father of Make Believe not only sees Coheed exploring the depths of their sound, but it also finds them exploring uncharted territories – at least for them: It finds them writing about themselves.

Hands-down their most personal release to-date, The Father of Make Believe stands apart from Coheed and Cambira’s past work because of its storyline – or lack thereof. While The Father of Make Believe surely tells a story, it’s one that many fans haven’t heard quite yet. Rather than weaving tales of The Amory Wars, this album is the story of Claudio Sanchez. Taking a departure from their past work, this album is an incredibly personal one for Sanchez, who lets listeners into his world more than ever with these songs.

Songs like “Goodbye, Sunshine” and “Searching For Tomorrow” find Sanchez reflecting on all that he’s created with Coheed, meanwhile the emotional ballad, “Meri of Mercy” is a stunning ode to his late grandparents. “Play The Poet” is an analysis on his role as a cultural figure, while “Corner My Confidence” is an ode to his wife.

Sonically, The Father of Make Believe marks the beginning of a new chapter for Coheed and Cambria, as well. Explosive singles like the ripper, “Blind Side Sonny” and poppy “Someone Who Can” might not be sweeping, six-minute long epics, but they find the band experimenting with vastly different sounds in a way that not only feels fun, but somehow totally works together. And that’s not to say that the album is without the massive, technical tracks that they’re used to. In fact, the final four songs bleed perfectly into one another, taking up twenty minutes of the album’s run-time in a way that fans will love.

The Father of Make Believe is an album that proves exactly why Coheed and Cambria have the staying power to keep them front-runners in the scene for twenty years. It proves that they’re not afraid of venturing into the unknown. It proves that they’re capable of just about anything, including bearing their heart and soul for everyone to see, and that’s what makes it a must-listen.

But on the day of their move, something happened that would change the course of their lives.

“I got sick with an ear infection in the hustle and bustle of moving,” he told CBN News. “My mom took me to the doctor. She thought it was just a routine ear infection. I had been getting them a lot lately.”

But Cortman’s mom felt deep in her gut that something else was going on. In fact, after the doctor prescribed antibiotics, she paused to share something she experienced on the way to his office.

“[She said], ‘Actually, on the way over here, the Lord spoke to me and told me that something is seriously wrong and that we need to go to the hospital,’ which is just a wild thing to say to a doctor,” Cortman recounted. “But, thankfully … the doctor was a Christian and he said, ‘Who am I to really argue with the Lord? So we can send you to the hospital.’”

Despite the doctor feeling relatively unconcerned at the time, he knew Cortman’s mother was resolute that she had heard from God. So he complied and called an ambulance — a fortunate choice considering what happened next.

“As you can imagine, it’s just a mix of utter disbelief, and shock, and starting to grieve, and really just confusion of what to do,” Cortman said. “And I think you kind of immediately go into a mode of, ‘OK, let’s figure out next steps.’”

  • Roblox CEO tells parents to keep kids off the platform if safety is a concern

Roblox CEO tells parents to keep kids off the platform if safety is a concern

    [ad_1]

In brief: Roblox has been heavily criticized for its (lack of) policy on younger players in the past. In a recent interview, the company’s lead said that parents should always have the final word on what their children are allowed to play on their screens.

Parents concerned about the content or interactions their children might encounter on Roblox should keep them off the platform. Company co-founder and CEO Dave Baszucki delivered this seemingly counterintuitive message in a recent BBC interview, stating that the company is doing all it can to ensure Roblox remains a child-safe virtual environment and game world.

Baszucki expressed trust in parents to make sound decisions regarding online game safety and confidence in the effectiveness of Roblox’s safety tools and parental controls. The company contends that even one bad incident is too many and claims to monitor the platform for potentially dangerous behaviors continuously.

Moderators remain vigilant for bullying, harassment, and other negative behaviors that require filtering. Baszucki mentioned that the platform routinely conducts behavior analysis behind the scenes. Management will take action and involve law enforcement if necessary. Players who choose not to behave civilly can face temporary suspensions or permanent bans.

In November, Roblox introduced new safety measures, restricting access to social hangouts and non-rated content for players under 13. Additionally, the platform now requires creators to rate content appropriately for its intended audience. Still, parents must stay informed and alert to their children’s online activity.

Last year, Roblox averaged over 80 million daily players, outpacing the PlayStation Network and Nintendo Switch Online combined. Around 40 percent of these players are under 13. The broadcaster demonstrated how, despite the new controls and safety measures, the platform can still expose younger users to inappropriate situations.

The BBC created two fake accounts, one aged 15 and one 27, exchanging messages between the two about going elsewhere to chat or play more adult games. The automated system caught these conversations, but the reporters still figured out a way to communicate the same idea without getting filtered.

Baszucki claimed the example proves how safe Roblox has become. Ill-intentioned people know and understand the rules enough to suggest other platforms to share illicit material or have adult conversations.

“We don’t condone any type of image-sharing on our own platform, and you’ll see us getting more and more, I think, way beyond where the law is on this type of behaviour,” Baszucki said.

In October, Bundchen’s pregnancy news was revealed – leaving her ex, Brady, ‘stunned’ by the revelation.

In November, Tom notably shared a cryptic quote about ‘failing’ and ‘coming short’ in the wake of Gisele’s pregnancy bombshell.

The quote was from former President Theodore Roosevelt and was seen on a card that the NFL star held up in a social media photo.

And during the 2024 Fortune Global Forum in New York City, he also admitted that he ‘screwed up a lot as a parent.’

A source recently told DailyMail.com that Brady has been struggling to date as he moves on from the ‘sting’ of Bundchen’s new romance.

‘Tom would love to date more but he is busy and very focused on his first year of being a commentator. It is easier to be single right now.’

The former NFL star notably signed a ten-year Fox deal – worth $375 million – back in September.

‘At first, everything stings. Her getting pregnant, her hanging out with Joaquim, her moving on. But then he snaps out of it and remains busy, knows that his life is pretty good and to worry about things he can’t control is a waste of time.’

Earlier this week the star showed off her incredible post-baby body one month after giving birth as she enjoyed a boat ride with Joaquim

The insider added, ‘He could complain but what’s the point. He got the best out of the relationship with Gisele until it fell apart, now it’s not his problem anymore. He will be fine.’

A source recently told DailyMail.com how Gisele and Joaquim broke the pregnancy news to Brady.

The model informed Tom that she was expecting her first child with Valente shortly after telling their children because she wanted him to hear it from her first – rather than through media reports.

‘Gisele and Joaquim were not planning to have a child together. This was unexpected. Joaquim has always wanted a family, so she is happy to be able to give this to him.’

‘She knew that he would be a great father when her kids started taking classes with him. He is patient, playful and so understanding,’ the insider stated.

Both Benjamin and Vivian were ‘absolutely thrilled’ over the big news, the source also shared.

At the time of their divorce, Gisele had starred in more than 550 ad campaigns, posed for 2,000 magazine covers, and walked in 800 fashion shows, while Tom had played 22 seasons in the NFL, helping his teams win seven Super Bowl titles and breaking numerous records along the way.

Together, the pair amassed a staggering fortune – even as Gisele put her fashion career on the backburner in order to support her husband’s quest for continued Super Bowl glory – they were estimated have a combined fortune of $733 million.

Gisele previously shut down speculation she had given the American football pro an ultimatum – forcing him to choose their relationship over his sporting career, in an interview with Vanity Fair.

Instead, she insisted they simply ‘grew apart’ and realized that they wanted ‘different things’.

‘Sometimes you grow together; sometimes you grow apart. When I was 26 years old and he was 29 years old, we met, we wanted a family, we wanted things together.’

The star went on to hint that she still had love for her ex-husband – but that they were no longer on the same page towards the end of their marriage.

She continued: ‘As time goes by, we realise that we just wanted different things, and now we have a choice to make. That doesn’t mean you don’t love the person.

CONOR Maynard has said he is not the father of The Traitors star Charlotte Chilton’s baby after ‘taking a paternity test’.

TV personality Charlotte, 32, announced she was pregnant with singer Conor‘s baby last year, however the pair endured a public fallout before Penelope’s birth.

The singer, also 32, has long insisted he is not the little girl’s dad, a claim contested by his ex.

Taking to Instagram this evening, he told fans that DNA analysis confirms this to be true.

Conor wrote: “Earlier this week, I took a paternity test regarding Charlotte Chilton’s baby girl, Penelope, in the presence of her legal representative.

“Today I’ve received the test results which confirm that I am not Penelope’s father.

“I am glad that the speculation can finally be put to an end.

“All I would ask is that people act with kindness in response to this news – there is a child at the heart of all of this and that should not be forgotten.

“I wish Charlotte and her family all the best. Conor.”

Charlotte’s representative has been contacted for comment by The Sun.

The recruitment manager previously threatened legal action against Conor.

Taking to her Instagram Story in November, Charlotte posted a private WhatsApp she sent to the influencer, in which she issued a stark ultimatum over financial support.

She said in the message: “Ok so we clearly are not friends however we have a daughter who is identical to you. I don’t even know if your family care. However I do.

“I am killing myself to pay for what she needs and deserves. So with that I can talk to you face to face or we can do court … take your pick. It’s time to grow up.”

In her caption, she told fans: “I have said it before and I will say it again I’m honest and trying to do what I can to be the best mum … what do we think this ‘man’ will say?”

Conor’s representatives have been contacted for comment.

When Charlotte announced the birth of their child on social media, she failed to tag Conor as they are currently not on speaking terms.

The reality star captioned her post: “Princess Penelope has arrived and we have been enjoying our ‘Penelope bubble’ so much.

“I am going to be off the radar for a little longer, whilst I enjoy these magical moments with my precious girl!! Thank you to all that have checked in to make sure I am ok!! my heart is full xx”

Charlotte had previously had seven agonising miscarriages and failed IVF during her marriage to estranged wife Laura.

Though she was very excited about becoming a mum, the situation with singer Conor left her distraight, and she described him as “a real-life traitor who betrayed me” in an interview with The Sun.

She fell pregnant from their one-night stand following a champagne-fuelled wrap party for the second series of The Traitors, hosted by Claudia Winkleman.

Charlotte was introduced to TikToker Conor by the BBC murder mystery game’s winner Harry Clark.

Not familiar with the pop star? Read on…

Conor Paul Maynard was born on November 21, 1992 in Brighton.

He is an English singer-songwriter and record producer.

His biggest chart hits are Can’t Say No and Vegas Girl.

He has worked with the likes of Labyrinth and Rita Ora.

Conor’s brother Jack is a YouTuber who appeared on I’m A Celebrity back in 2017 before quitting the jungle amid a fallout over homophobic and racist tweets.

She said she felt pressured into keeping Conor’s identity as the father a secret.

Speaking to The Sun on Sunday, Charlotte previously said: “We had a great night together and even sent Harry a selfie of us in bed saying, ‘Successful match’.

“We kept in touch, confided in each other and planned to meet up. But after I told him I was pregnant that apparently decent man changed.

“He turned on me, I felt pressured into keeping his identity as the father a secret.

“He told me, ‘I’m not ready to be a dad. It’s nothing against you, Charlotte, but even if we’d been together three years, I would be the exact same. I do not want to have a child. That’s why I haven’t got a dog’.

“It was so stressful that doctors twice put me on bed rest. I thought I was going to miscarry.”
