  • Baby Left To Die In NHS Hospital

    There is no denying that the NHS is under pressure. Who can forget the red alert meltdown in January? Almost half of NHS trusts across England declared major hospital alerts in one week. But it appears things have been going awry for a long time. As the NHS is forced to keep cancelling non-emergency operations to try and recover control, vulnerable people are being ignored and neglected. And only now are we understanding the full effects of all of this.
    Kayden Bancroft

    Kayden Bancroft was 20 months old when he died at Royal Manchester Children’s Hospital (RMCH) in April 2016. He’d been waiting three days for life-saving surgery. After falling and hurting his mouth, Bancroft was taken to Stepping Hill Hospital where it was discovered he had a hole in his diaphragm, and part of his bowel had burst through the hole. Staff asked for him to be transferred to RMCH, but were denied as there was no intensive care bed available.

    He was transferred the following day to an ordinary ward and his surgery was repeatedly delayed. He then suffered a cardiac arrest, with nurses struggling for 30 minutes to resuscitate him.
    Speaking of the trauma, Bancroft’s grandmother Julie Rowlands said:
    “His care was appalling. He was basically put in a room, and left. And all we got, nearly every day, was, ‘He’s not having the operation today, he’s not having the operation today.’ They were coming up with excuses, ‘There’s no bed, or a car crash victim’s come in.’ That’s all we got, all the time we were there, was excuses”.

    Speaking of the hospital’s failure, she added:

    “After his cardiac arrest the doctors tried to bring him round, but he was without oxygen for almost half an hour. They took him to theatre, but I knew it was too late. It was four-and-a-half hours before they brought him back and they apologised there and then and said as a hospital they had failed him”.
    A preventable death

    As the family’s lawyer Stephen Clarkson highlighted after the inquest into the hospital’s failure: “The real tragedy here is that Kayden’s death was entirely preventable”.
    During the incident, it was revealed that senior surgeons repeatedly tried to warn trust management about the shortage of emergency operating theatres. Hospital consultant Mr Khalil also told the BBC: “On Thursday [two days after being admitted to RMCH], one of the surgeons had offered to cancel one of his elective lists, so that he could do Kayden as an emergency, but did not receive the support that he needed. That should not have happened.”
    The trust told the BBC that it had no record of this request. It said:
    “We believe that there are sufficient theatres in our children’s hospital to cope with the demand for emergency cases; however, on occasions some children do have to wait for urgent surgery while emergency surgery takes place”.

    The trust added:
    “The trust would like to make it clear that at no time has it directed clinical staff to prioritise elective over non-elective care. As is the case at most similar hospitals, elective cases are regularly cancelled to accommodate emergency patients”.

    Continued cancellations

    The consequences of cancelling operations and appointments are blatantly clear. But thanks to government underfunding, the NHS has been left without any other options. In 2016, 20,000 eye appointments were cancelled at Shropshire’s hospitals alone. Chief Executive of the NHS Simon Stevens has also revealed this is only likely to continue, as patients must wait longer for non-urgent operations as a ‘trade off’ for improvements in other areas.

    It’s only so long before an urgent case like Bancroft’s gets overlooked in the chaos.

  • This Family Portrait Has A Beautiful, Bittersweet Backstory

    Can someone convey unconditional love, loss, grief, hope and joy all with a single tattoo?

    That seems to be the case for a husband and wife whose backs are adorned with a matching pair of wings. A touching photo displaying their his-and-hers tattoos has gone viral—and when you hear the heartbreaking story behind the image, you’ll understand why.


    A Heartbreaking Loss

    Steven and Gloria Kimmel’s son Isaac was born in 2014. When he was just six months old, doctors diagnosed Isaac with spinal muscular atrophy. The rare, progressive genetic disorder that affects the muscles and nervous system is estimated to occur in one out of 6,000 live births.


    The Kimmels, of Kendallville, Indiana, shared details of little Isaac’s trials and triumphs on a Facebook page called Isaac’s Strength. Although doctors told them that the disorder was terminal, Isaac’s parents relished every moment with their son and even participated in a clinical trial that led to a new drug for SMA patients.


    While he did regain strength for a time, Isaac contracted a viral infection that his little body simply couldn’t fight. Sadly, Isaac passed away at just 14 months old.


    As a way of dealing with their grief, which Gloria called “unimaginable,” the Kimmels decided to have matching angel wings tattooed on their backs.

    ‘He Is Always With Us In Spirit’

    “The tattoo was meant to be his angel wings,” Gloria told Yahoo Beauty. “He was half of each of us, so we each had one of his wings to hold us. He was the angel that was holding us together when we were so lost without him. The tattoos are a reminder that he is always with us in spirit.”


    Shortly after what would have been Isaac’s third birthday, the Kimmels had cause for celebration when their daughter, Claire, was born. To share their excitement while remembering their precious son, the family had a photo taken with swaddled Claire resting on their backs, the angel wings aligned perfectly behind her.


    Gloria’s sister Grace Arend shared the photo on Twitter.


    “My sister & her husband got tattoos of angel wings after their son died 2 yrs ago,” Arend tweeted. “They had a baby girl in June. This moves me to tears.”


    Thousands of people were touched by the emotional family photo, which has been shared on Twitter over 20,000 times and liked nearly 70,000 times.


    Gloria pointed out to Yahoo! Beauty that even now, two years after losing Isaac, she is still learning new ways to cope with her grief. As anyone who has suffered a loss knows, grief doesn’t have an expiration date. For Gloria, she says support from loved ones and her church, plus grief journaling have helped. Here’s hoping the arrival of their beautiful, healthy daughter will help them heal as well.

  • Employees Removed After Viral Post 

    JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Hospital employees have been removed from their post at the Naval Hospital Jacksonville after disturbing photos with newborns surfaced on social media Monday.


    The viral post shared a photo from a Snapchat account, which showed the employee giving the middle finger to a newborn, followed by a caption that read “How I currently feel about these mini Satans.” The post also read the “navy nurse” and her friend made a baby dance to rap music.


    Jeanne Casey, the Public Affairs Officer at Naval Hospital Jacksonville, released the following statement:

    “We are aware of a video/ photo posted online.  It’s outrageous, unacceptable, incredibly unprofessional, and cannot be tolerated.  We have identified the staff members involved.  They have been removed from patient care and they will be handled by the legal system and military justice.  We’re in the process of notifying the patient”s parents.”

    The statement was also posted on the Naval Hospital Jacksonville Facebook page:

  • Baby dies in steamy bathroom 

    A baby died in the United States after his father left him in a steamy bathroom, in an attempt to ease his cough.
    The one-year-old, named Mordechai Halpern, woke up coughing, police told the New York Daily News.
    The boy’s father told police he gave him a bottle with water and lemon juice.

    The remedy didn’t work, so he placed the boy in his stroller, covered him with a blanket and turned on the hot water.
    When she woke up 90 minutes, later the boy’s mother found the baby unconscious.
    Halpern was rushed to a New York hospital, where he was pronounced dead in minutes.
    His body temperature when he died was 108F degrees (42C), sources told the New York Daily News.
    Police did not think the father meant to harm his son, sources said.
    An autopsy will be held to determine the baby’s cause of death.

  • Gastrochisis, we were so scared we would lose our baby

    This is a touchy subject, not many people have heard of or know what Gastrochisis is. I thought I would raise awareness by sharing my story with all you amazing women.

    I fell pregnant at 16 years old and was so scared as I didn’t know what to do. I told my boyfriend and then told family who weren’t happy to start with but were so supportive.


    We went for our 1st scan in March 2016 and were so excited to see our wee gem.


    We never noticed in the scan picture that anything was wrong but the radiographer did so they sent us out the room and made us wait for answers.


    When they came back they told us we needed to go and see a specialist doctor to see what the problem was. We went ahead to the appointment, we found out our baby boy had a condition called gastrochisis. 


    We had no clue what it was or how it happens. We were so scared that we would lose our baby.


    Gastrochisis is when your baby is growing inside you, their wee body’s are forming and coming together but if the baby forms and doesn’t come together properly it can result in your baby having Gastrochisis. For my baby it meant that was his bowel that would be on the outside of his body when he was born. This would mean that when he was brought into this world he had to get an operation to fix it, this was a lot to take in. We went home and looked it up and read all the horror stories.


    We were brave and I was induced on the 28th August 2016 (21 days before I was due). We had our little boy on the 31st August 2016. This is when it got hard for us all. Our baby was rushed away from us the second he was born and we were not allowed to hold him until he had his operation. 3 nights later we were allowed our first cuddle and seeing our boy fighting for his wee life broke our hearts. Everyday was a struggle, infection after infection, being sick constantly. We finally got to try him with some milk, just 1ml. 1ml of milk! And he couldn’t keep it down. After 8 weeks of trying the doctors changed his milk. Now he was on this new milk and he slowly improved! 3 months later and our little boy was happy, healthy and smiling. On the 25th November 2016 we were told we can come home. He fought his battle, proper little trouper! If anybody has ever been through the same thing I’d like to hear your stories!

  • Mum Puts Child Down For A Nap And Then This Happens

    Amber Boone was having a completely normal day when she decided to put her three-year-old daughter, Aubrey, down for a nap.


    She didn’t do anything differently than she normally did, and she assumed her daughter was sound asleep in her bedroom. But Amber quickly realized she hadn’t taken account of one of the most important safety features in her home.
    Amber’s daughter was in her bedroom on the second floor while Amber went downstairs to work in the house, a few minutes later, she heard a loud banging on her door.
    She said, “Next thing I knew my neighbour was banging on my door, and I started to get a little frustrated … I was like ‘who is banging on my door that hard,’ but by the time I even got halfway there, because I was in the kitchen, she stormed in and she said, ‘I think your daughter fell, I think she fell.’”
    It was every parent’s worst nightmare. Amber said, I saw her laying on top of the screen in the driveway … My first thing was like running to her and making sure she doesn’t fall asleep, seeing if there’s anything else, making sure she doesn’t move.

    Little Aubrey was rushed to the hospital where the doctors discovered she had a fractured skull, lacerated spleen and a swollen-shut bowel. She has mostly recovered from the fall, but Amber said, “Everything has healed other than the skull, that’s going to take time. It’s a bone. They said four to six months that it will heal.”
    The overlooked security

    Aubrey, like any other child at that age, loves to climb and explore, so it makes sense that she wanted to open the window and look out to see more. Plus, little kids don’t have great balance at that age, so it’s easy for them to fall.
    I was visiting a friend recently who has many children and when we were standing outside the house, I saw one of her kids lean out of a second-floor window — even his torso was out.

    Children like to explore

    Once children learn to walk, it takes time to perfect their skills and they eventually learn to climb, kick, jump and run. These abilities make the little munchkins perfect explorers.

    When children learn these skills, they often like to feel independent. They like to do things all by themselves — without help from mum and dad. Because of this, these children need constant supervision by a responsible adult.

    It’s important to make sure your home is a safe space for your children to explore. Put locks on the cleaning cupboard , cover plugs, put up stair gates and lock your windows. You can never be too careful when it comes to making your house safe. Accidents always happen when things are overlooked.
    The idea of danger in babies

    Just as their motor skills have to develop, their cognitive skills have to go through that process as well.
    Small children’s brains take a while to develop, and babies and some toddlers don’t have the concept of danger. This is why they often have accidents, so it’s important to keep them safe.

    Reduce the chances of accidents

    Helping your child have a concept of the word “no” will help you prevent accidents. It takes time, patience and intervention, but it’s so worth it. Sometimes, you have to say it over and over until your children understand.

    Some handy tips:

    Visual contact: When talking to the child, crouch down to their height and make eye contact.

    Don’t shout: When your children are in danger or doing something they’re not supposed to, your first reaction is to shout. This will only frighten them.

    Baby-proof your house: We already talked about this earlier, but make sure all accessible areas in your home are safe for children to explore.

    Use your words: You might want to hit your child, but refrain from the temptation. Just take a deep breath and say “NO.”

    Your kids will have accidents — it’s inevitable. Make sure you follow these guidelines to teach your kids and lower the risk of something terrible happening.

  • How to Find Out Your Baby’s Gender – The Nub Theory Explained

    For as long as people have been having babies parents has been very eager to find out the gender of their baby as soon as possible!

    More often than not you’d have to wait for your 20 week scan to find out this information, if your sonographer is lucky enough to be able to find out for you!

    Perhaps you’ve turned to some old wives tales to try to find out, the old ring over your belly trick or peeing into a cup of bleach! (We really wouldn’t suggest that last one for anyone to try!)

    We’re going to tell you a different way which might be able to tell you the gender of your baby as early as 11 weeks into your pregnancy!

    The Nub Theory has been around for quite a long time now although there is still quite a lot of confusion as to understanding how it actually works.

    The way the Nub Theory works is basically ‘the angle of the dangle’. Between 11 and 14 weeks’ into your pregnancy both baby girls and baby boys have a penis-like protuberance between the legs. While they do seem extremely similar at this point the difference is how you can tell the baby’s gender! It’s all about angle at which they are pointing! The theory goes that boy’s ‘dangle’ will be 30 degrees up relative to the backbone and a girl’s is below 30 degrees.

    Not everyone will be able to use the Nub Theory, it’s all to do with how much your baby wants to co-operate on the day of the scan unfortunately, the foetus must not be curled up, they need to be lying very flat. Also, it must be side on and apparently, it is better if the foetus is right side up.

    Obviously sometimes the babies will fall into a bit of a ‘grey area’ and you’ll be unable to get a definitive answer.

    The further into your pregnancy the more likely you are to be able to use the Nub Theory, if you are scanned at 11 weeks, it can be difficult to tell the difference between the genders. A scan at 12 weeks is around 75% accurate and at 13 weeks it’s closer to 95% accurate.

  • Man Gives Birth to Healthy Baby Boy

    An American transgender man has given birth to a healthy baby boy.

    Trystan Reese, from Portland, Oregon, was born female but started taking hormones almost a decade ago but stopped when he got pregnant and has now given birth to a son, Leo.

    Reese has previously suffered a miscarriage the last time he got pregnant and thought he had missed his chance to have children of his own.

    Leo is the first biological child for Trystan Reese and his husband, Biff Chaplow, and joins the happy family with two adopted children.

    “I would say it’s unique. I understand that people are not used to two men having a biological child,” Mr Reese told Fox News.

    The couple shared this beautiful picture on Facebook.

    “The moment he was born was just like a pure moment of bliss, like the happiest moment of my life. To see the very beginning of Leo, of his life, was just like amazing,” Mr Chaplow added.

    The happy family said their friends and family have supported them throughout but they have unfortunately received some backlash from people online.
