Jerry MacKenzie’s tragic end was explored in the most recent season

Outlander season seven has wrapped up with fans racing straight back to the start of the series again.

Those on their latest re-watch of the hit Starz series may have noticed a small detail included by the writers alluding to a storyline later on.

After Claire Fraser (played by Caitríona Balfe) returned back to the 20th century, she spent some time at Reverend Wakefield’s (James Fleet) home.

During her convalescence and explaining to her first husband Frank Randall (Tobias Menzies) where she’d been for the past two years, she also saw the reverend’s adopted son Roger Wakefield (Rory Burns) playing around the house.

One key detail the programme-makers included was young Roger running around the house with an aeroplane in his hands.

While it may have simply been a toy the child played with, it seemed to also allude to the fate of his father Jeremiah ‘Jerry’ Walter MacKenzie (Nicholas Ralph).

Roger was adopted after his parents were killed during World War II by the kindly Inverness clergyman.

However, he may also have been aware his father was a fighter pilot and so playing with an aeroplane would have given him a link to his now deceased parent.

For those unfamiliar with the Outlander books, the toy aeroplane seemed to be a clear nod to this storyline which would be explored later on.

Both Outlander season seven and the short story A Leaf on the Wind of All Hallows by Diana Gabaldon shed light on Jerry’s tragic fate.

Jerry served as a Spitfire pilot between 1939 and 1941 with the Green Squadron, ending up with a wound which required rest at home.

He was later recruited by Frank to go on a top secret mission to Poland and take photos of the Nazi concentration camps.

Prior to the mission, Jerry was sent to Northumberland to practice his manoeuvres but during his training the fighter pilot’s aeroplane crashed on Halloween.

Jerry’s crash occurred near a set of standing stones and he found himself thrown back into the past after leaning on one of the towering rocks for support in the aftermath of his accident.

In the past, Jerry had several mishaps with the locals in the 18th century with his dog tags – his only form of identification – stolen from him.

Luckily, he was eventually helped back to the stones and his own to time by his son Roger MacKenzie (Richard Rankin) and Buck MacKenzie (Diarmaid Murtagh) who’d also ended up in 1739.

Jerry returned to the 20th century and got to his wife just as an air raid hit London, managing to save his infant son but getting killed in the process.

Due to the loss of his dog tags in the past, Jerry’s body was unidentifiable and so he was always thought to have gone missing.

This suggests in some ways Frank may have been inadvertently responsible for Jerry’s death.

AZUSA, Calif. (KABC) — A man has been arrested in connection to the stabbing death of his parents inside an Azusa home, authorities said.

28-year-old Gabriel Luis Contreras of Azusa was detained March 15 in front of a residence with “numerous apparent knife wounds” and was taken by ambulance to a hospital and listed in critical condition, sheriff’s officials said.

Azusa police officers responded around 2 p.m. to a call of a person screaming and possible domestic violence in the 300 block of North Twintree Avenue, according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department.

When officers entered the home, they found Contreras’ parents, Linda Rodriguez and Arthur Contreras, also with “numerous apparent knife wounds.” They were pronounced dead at the scene.

A newborn baby died due to the gross failure of three midwives to provide basic medical care, a corner has ruled.

Ida Lock was born at the Royal Lancaster Infirmary (RLI) on 9 November 2019 but died a week later after suffering a serious brain injury due to a lack of oxygen.

After a five-week inquest at Preston County Hall, coroner James Adeley concluded that Ida’s death had been caused by the midwives’ failure to deliver the infant “urgently when it was apparent she was in distress” and contributed to by the lead midwife’s “wholly incompetent failure to provide basic neonatal resuscitation”.

He said there had been eight missed opportunities “to alter Ida’s clinical course”.

The inquest heard that Ida was transferred to the intensive care unit at Royal Preston Hospital’s neonatal unit, where she died on 16 November 2019.

The hearing previously heard that an April 2020 report from the independent Healthcare Safety Investigation Branch (HSIB) had identified numerous failings in Ida’s care which had contributed to her death.

The review said midwives failed to identify an abnormally slow foetal heart rate after Ida’s mother, Sarah Robinson, attended in early labour.

After Ida was born there was ineffective resuscitation, the HSIB concluded.

But an earlier internal “root cause analysis” from the hospital in January 2020 found no issues and praised the “great cohesion and communication” shown by staff in the delivery suite.

After reading the “night and day” contrasting reports, Ida’s parents Ms Robinson and Ryan Lock complained to University Hospitals of Morecambe Bay NHS Foundation Trust (UHMBT), which runs the hospital.

Delivering his conclusion, Dr Adeley, said: “Ida was a normal child whose death was caused by a lack of oxygen during her delivery that occurred due to the gross failure of the three midwives attending her to provide basic medical care to deliver Ida urgently when it was apparent she was in distress.”

And he noted that her death was contributed to by the lead midwife’s “wholly incompetent” failure to provide basic neonatal resuscitation during the first three-and-half minutes of her life.

This, he said, further contributed to the infant’s brain damage.

The senior coroner also criticised the hospital’s investigation into Ida’s death, calling it a “damning indictment of an ineffective, dysfunctional and callous system that has failed this family at every opportunity”.

UHMBT was the subject of a damning report in 2015 that found a “lethal mix” of problems at another of its maternity units at Furness General Hospital that led to the unnecessary deaths of 11 babies and one mother between 2004 and 2013.

The Morecambe Bay investigation, chaired by Dr Bill Kirkup, uncovered a series of failures “at every level”, from the unit itself to those responsible for regulating and monitoring the trust.

In a statement, Tabetha Darmon, chief nursing officer of UHMBT, said: “Losing a child is tragic and our heartfelt condolences go out to Ida’s parents, family and loved ones. We are truly sorry for the distress we have caused.

“We accept that we failed Ida and her family and if we had done some things differently and sooner, Ida would still be here today.

“We also acknowledge the additional upset caused to Ida’s parents and family as a result of the way investigations into Ida’s death have been conducted since 2019.

“For that, we are truly sorry.

“We take the conclusions from the coroner very seriously and have made a number of the improvements identified during the inquest.

“We are carefully reviewing the learning identified to ensure that we do everything we can to prevent this from happening to another family.”

He reaffirmed his commitment to bringing all hostages, both living and deceased, back to Israel, emphasizing that “this is especially critical in the current window of opportunity.”

A judicial magistrate on Friday remanded Kamran Asghar Qureshi, the father of prime suspect Armaghan in the Mustafa Amir kidnap and murder case, in police custody for two days.

Kamran has been booked by the Anti-Violent Crime Cell (AVCC) in two separate cases after allegedly being caught with an unlicensed pistol and ice outside his residence in Khayaban-e-Momin, DHA Phase V on Thursday.

The investigation officer presented the suspect before Judicial Magistrate (South) Shahzad Khuwaja and requested his three-day physical remand for interrogation. State prosecutor Shakeel Abbasi contended that the suspect’s custody was needed to interrogate him about the source of the seized drug and pistol. He said the suspect was clever and dodging the investigators.

He informed the court that Kamran had also advised his son Armaghan to flee Karachi after the murder of Amir and that he had also been extending threats to prosecution, judges and media persons.

Defence counsel Khurram Abbas argued that his client had been taken into custody on the evening of March 18 and kept in illegal confinement for two days. He said that Kamran was being punished for defending his son, adding that alleged seized drugs and weapon had been foisted upon him as the police had no private witness to back up the allegations.

At the outset of the hearing, the magistrate asked Armaghan’s father whether he had been maltreated by the police. He responded that he had been tortured, and when asked to show the marks, he said he would need to remove his clothes to do so. The magistrate then directed a court staffer to take him inside a chamber for verification.

Later, the magistrate noted that the marks appeared to be old according to the staffer, and ordered a medical examination. Kamran told the court that the cops arrested him from his residence after breaking the gate of his house. He complained that he had not been provided with copies of the FIRs nor informed about the charges against him.

After hearing arguments, the magistrate handed the suspect over to police custody for two days and directed that copies of the FIRs be supplied to the defence side. Two FIRs have been lodged against him under the relevant sections of the Control of Narcotic Substances (Amendment) Act 2022 and Sindh Arms Act. According to the FIRs, ice packed in two plastic bags and a 9mm pistol were seized from a school bag carried by Kamran.

Following the arrest of Kamran, a series of videos have surfaced showing him expressing remorse over the murder of Amir.

In these videos, Kamran appears visibly ashamed of the incident and openly apologises to Amir’s parents as well as the media. The videos also reveal Kamran acknowledging that the police raid on his house was justified.

The raid on February 9, during which Armaghan had opened fire on the raiding police team, resulted in injuries to a DSP and a police constable.

Kamran is also seen apologising to the media and Amir’s parents in the videos for his previous remarks about the case.

According to Kamran, he had later realised that the media reports about the case were accurate. “If any of my statements hurt the media, i apologise,” he said.

He also extended his apology to Amir’s mother Wajiha and her husband stating that he was emotionally distressed over the case, and if he had said anything inappropriate in anger, he regretted that.

“The police raid on my house was conducted according to the law,” he said. “If I used any inappropriate words in frustration during or before the raid, I apologise for that as well.”

Kamran was arrested by the police on Thursday during a raid at his residence in Gizri. Authorities claimed to have recovered ice (crystal meth) and a pistol from his possession.

Police have accused him of purchasing four sophisticated automatic rifles that were seized following Armaghan’s arrest. According to the investigation, Kamran allegedly bought those weapons and later handed them over to his son.

Police have also claim retrieving video evidence from Kamran’s mobile phone showing him purchasing the weapons, inspecting them and even test-firing them. It has also been revealed that these weapons, despite being legally purchased from Peshawar, were illegally brought and possessed. The firearms are reported to be extremely expensive, and their verification is still pending.
