Punjab shocker: After the mother’s death, the accused set the body on fire in an attempt to destroy the evidence.

A 75-year-old Gurnam Kaur was murdered by her son and his family members at Jalalabad village in Moga district on Friday night over five marlas of land.

After killing the septuagenarian, the accused burnt the body at their house.

According to the Dharamkot deputy superintendent of police (DSP) Ramandeep Singh, based on the complaint of the deceased’s daughter, accused son Sukhmandar Singh, his wife Balwainder Kaur and daughter-in-law Amandeep Kaur were arrested for the murder charges.

“Sukhmandar’s son Satpal Singh is absconding, and efforts are on to arrest him too for his involvement in the crime,” said the DSP.

Police said that Gurnam was hit on her head by a stick, and she died. After her death, the accused set the body on fire in an attempt to destroy the evidence.

The deceased’s daughter, Daljit Kaur, a resident of Ludhiana, told reporters that she was alerted by the villagers about the incident.

On reaching the house, I found the charred remains of my mother, Daljit Kaur said.

“My mother nominated me for the five marla land to decide who would get it after her demise. It was not transferred in my name, but my brother used to insist that the land be sold and the money be given to him,” she added.

A Laois TD has confronted the Minister for Finance with huge staffing gaps in a specialist Laois HSE team that is supposed to provide vital care to children and help for their parents.

Laois independent TD Brian Stanley raised what he said was the chronic situation in Laois due to the lack of staffing in the county’s Child Disability Network Team (CDNT) which is based in Portlaoise.

The TD also spotlighted financial burdens on parents in his community, which has forced some to borrow money from moneylenders to get their children assessed.

Dep Stanley laid bare the problems with the Laois team in Leinster House with one of the Government’s most powerful ministers, Paschal Donohoe, the Minister for Finance.

Dep Stanley said the HSE has told him that 22% and 29% of posts are vacant on CDNT teams around Ireland but Laois has some of the worst problems.

“In Laois I can tell the Minister that there are posts where there are 100% vacancy and 67% vacancy. There is a chronic situation regarding staffing in Laois. The figures for network 12 which covers most of the county, are absolutely shocking,” he said.

He gave figures for what he said were three critical disciplines for children who are on the autism spectrum. He said just a third of occupational therapy posts are are filled in Laois. Just 46% of speech and language are filled while only half of the physiotherapy positions are occupied.

He said it gets worse.

“If you go down to therapy assistants, there are zero levels of staffing. Dietetics, zero, behaviour therapists, incredibly are zero,” he told Minister Donohue.

He outlined the impact on families of these shortcomings.

“I raise this with the Minister on behalf of parents who are at their wits’ end on this issue. For children who badly need services and who have autism, ADHD, dyspraxia or a range of other disabilities, the services are not there.

“These children are missing out on assessments, therapies and crucially on care at a crucial stage in their development. We all know children with special needs require the early interventions. Early interventions equal better outcomes but late or no interventions leads to huge problems later in life. This can cause huge problems for families and children who do not go on to live the full lives they should.

Dep Stanley said some parents are hitting financial problems.

“It is putting enormous pressure on families, so parents, including those who cannot afford it, are going for private assessment and in some cases are borrowing thousands of euro. Sometimes that is from the credit union or from family and friend’s but sometimes it is from moneylenders,” he said.

The TD said voluntary organisations try to “plug the gap” but they can only do a small percentage of what is needed.

Dep Stanley told the Minister that the problem is not new and he has been looking for help for families since the 1990s but he insisted that Laois has a particular problem.

“I know it cannot be fixed overnight, and it means increasing the pipeline. What is been done by Government to increase the workforce supply pipeline? We cannot flick a switch, I understand that.”

In response, Minister Donohoe acknowledged what he said was “huge anxiety and distress” that families can face when children with additional needs, need additional support and have various conditions. MORE BELOW PICTURE.

The Laois team is based at the St Fintan’s Campus in Portlaoise.

He said voluntary organisations and service providers outside of the State play a very valuable role and appreciated the Dep Stanley ‘honesty’ in acknowledging that it is going to take time when time.

He said the Government is doing three particular things but made no specific comment in relation to the acute shortages in Laois. Firstly, a Cabinet subcommittee on the issue of Disability has been set up which is being chaired by the Taoiseach Micheál Martin.

Secondly, he said there are students in universities and places of higher learning who can become the vert therapists and the Government is also looking at this.

Finally, on recruitment, the Fine Gael Minister, accepted that more therapists and healthcare professionals are needed, but added that more therapists are being recruited for schools.

The HSE says a CDNT provides specialised support and services for children have complex health needs associated with their disability.

Machine Gun Kelly is mourning the loss of his friend, Luke “The Dingo” Trembath, who died at the age of 38.

On Friday, March 7, MGK, whose real name is Colson Baker, posted a lengthy tribute to the snowboarder.

“Crazy…I didn’t even cry this hard when my dad died,” MGK wrote on Instagram. “I’ve lost a lot of friends, but I’ve never lost a brother. We’ll never get another Dingo on this planet. A true rockstar without ever needing to make a song, the most loyal, loud, charismatic, funny, and annoying human I’ve ever had the honor of knowing.”

Trembath’s death was confirmed by Monster Energy, a company who had sponsored him, on Friday, February 28.

“His unparalleled passion and energy were infectious, lighting up everything he touched. We’ll forever remember his iconic laugh, his love for racing suits, and his genuine ability to connect with everyone he met. Here’s to you Dingo, you’ll be deeply missed and forever remembered,” read a statement posted on X (formerly Twitter).

Trembath’s cause of death has not been revealed.

MGK’s Instagram post comes as he awaits the arrival of his child with his ex-fiancee, Megan Fox. He made mention of the baby in his Instagram tribute.

“I feel like your [sic] up there with my new child, dressed up in a hilarious costume making them laugh, getting ready to send them down. I couldn’t ask for a more bittersweet birth blessing,” MGK wrote.

TMZ previously reported that Fox‘s due date is this month. The actress shares three sons, Noah, 12, Bodhi, 11, and Journey, 8, with ex-husband Brian Austin Green. Meanwhile, MGK is a father of one daughter, Casie, whom he welcomed in 2009 with his ex-girlfriend Emma Cannon.

Fox and MGK split in November 2024. Per TMZ, the two ended things over Thanksgiving weekend.

U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) have arrested a father outside his child’s school in Trenton, Michigan, on Wednesday, the Detroit Free Press reported.

Newsweek has reached out to ICE via email for comment on Saturday afternoon.

The Detroit Free Press reported Friday that ICE agents arrested Jose Guadalupe Jaimes, a 55-year-old immigrant father, outside Arthur Middle School in Trenton on Wednesday morning. Jaimes had just dropped off his eighth-grade son, who was diagnosed with Asperger’s syndrome, when three vehicles with flashing lights approached his work van, his family said per the newspaper. ICE agents, some with guns drawn, detained Jaimes, who now sits in St. Clair County Jail.

Jaimes, who has lived in the U.S. for 30 years and owns a painting business, has no known criminal record or cases pending in Wayne County courts, according to public records.

An ICE spokesperson told the Free Press, Jaimes had been “ordered removed by an immigration judge in 2014” and described him as an “illegal alien from Mexico.”

Meanwhile, his family asserts that Jaimes had a work permit and documentation to live in the country.

Jaimes, who owns Lupes Pro Painting, started his business after years of working for others. His family described him as a hardworking, cheerful man dedicated to providing for his loved ones.

“We just want him back home,” said his son, Hector Jaimes, a junior at Tusculum University in Tennessee, told the Free Press. Upon learning of his father’s arrest through a Facebook post, Hector drove eight hours back to Michigan. “He is always smiling. He’s a family person. He’s always trying to give us everything…that he never had while he was young.”

The arrest has since sparked criticism from community members and local officials, including Democratic state Senator Darrin Camilleri who said he was “appalled” by the incident.

The arrest outside a school also reignites a national debate over ICE’s enforcement at sensitive locations, a practice previously restricted under past administrations but expanded under Trump. In January, the president granted ICE the authority to detain migrants suspected of being in the country illegally in or near sensitive locations such as schools, hospitals, and churches.

The rollback has alarmed immigrant advocates who argue that it could deter undocumented migrants from seeking essential services, including medical care and education for their children. Schools and churches across the country have expressed their commitment to protecting immigrant communities as churches historically have served as sanctuaries for migrants seeking to avoid ICE arrests.

Meanwhile, ICE agents are reportedly preparing a new operation to detain migrant families with children, according to multiple reports.

The raids are expected to focus on tracking down adults and minor children who entered the U.S. together and have deportation orders, NBC News reported Thursday.

Another operation is also underway to track down children who entered the country unaccompanied and were released without court dates, NBC News added.

During the 2024 presidential campaign, Trump and border czar Tom Homan said initial plans for mass deportations would focus on migrants with serious criminal records.

It comes after White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt confirmed in January that the Trump administration sees all migrants without legal status as “criminals.”

Democratic Michigan state Senator Darrin Camilleri told the Detroit Free Press: “I just spoke with his family, and they are heartbroken. To make matters more infuriating, his family says he has a work permit and ID to be here. It is a moral failure that our schools, places of worship and other community spaces are being used to tear families apart and spread fear and chaos across our country.”

Jose Guadalupe Jaimes’ daughter, Anna Jaimes, told WXYZ-TV: “He’s just a hard worker. … He doesn’t deserve none of this. I think he’s always just trying to do good stuff and work hard and take care of his family.”

In response to a recent rally in southwest Detroit in support of immigrants, asking ICE not to target them, an ICE spokesman said: “While U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement respects the rights and civil liberties of all individuals, ICE, through its congressionally assigned criminal and civil immigration enforcement authorities, arrests aliens who commit crimes and have violated our nation’s immigration laws. All aliens in violation of U.S. immigration law may be subject to arrest, detention and, if found removable by final order, removal from the United States, regardless of nationality.”

What Happens Next?

Jaimes remains in ICE custody pending the outcome of his immigration proceedings and the case will now be handled by federal immigration courts.

As the Trump administration expands ICE’s scope, migrant raids are expected to gather speed and scale over the coming months.

I am staring at the faces of women on my screen, transfixed by emotions too complex to disentangle; discernible, though, are grief, rage… and fear.

For the women pictured are some of the more than 170 who have been killed by their sons in the UK in the past 15 years. Their appalling tragedy – being killed by the person to whom they gave life – has a chilling resonance. Like many of those whose deaths have been highlighted in the 2,000 Women report by the Femicide Census, I am a professional with adored adult children and a close circle of friends. I am also frightened of my son.

The women’s backstories are all too familiar – that is, an adult son with mental health and social problems, drug misuse, neurological diagnoses and a history of controlling and violent behaviour. Invariably, the perpetrators have fallen through every net designed to safeguard them. Often such a net never existed.

It is a peculiar place to inhabit, to be simultaneously scared of your son while desperately wanting to hold and support him. It is hard enough to walk away from an abusive partner, let alone your child, whose vulnerabilities and misery claw at the heart. My son lives in a state of deep unhappiness, prey to stimuli he can’t filter, fraught social encounters, chronic anxiety and physical discomfort. Life is bewildering, painful, hard.

At 24, he is a young man with learning disabilities and no hope of any of the aspirations of neurotypical peers: no career ladder, no partner, no festivals or functional friendships. Life is something to be battled and endured. I would not spend a minute in his shoes. He needs me for support, advocacy and protection. He still sleeps with his security blanket. I can’t and won’t walk away.

But I often wish I could. On my phone is a recent text, the words “fucking cunt” written repeatedly. It was sent because I had blocked his calls after being asked the same question for 20 minutes. I was at work. He rang a further 76 times. Such messages are common, as is driving somewhere while he violently elbows the seat close to me – the list of challenging behaviours is exhaustive and exhausting. It is not just autistic meltdowns caused by an inability to regulate emotions but an expression of deep-seated mental health problems.

In the photographs, I see resilient, smart, smiling women – doing their best to live normally against a backdrop of abnormality few can relate to. I am paralysed with sorrow for them, as I am for the mainly young men who killed the one person who loved and supported them the most.

In many instances the women sought help. The inquest into the death of Sally Poynton, 44, stabbed repeatedly by her 22-year-old son Jacob Poynton-Whiting during a severe psychotic episode in June 2021, found that her death could have been avoided if her son’s mental health condition had been diagnosed sooner. She had tried more than 20 times to get help for him.

That matricide is largely linked to mental health is borne out by research that is soon to be published. It was reported last week that academics Prof Rachel Condry and Dr Caroline Miles, from the universities of Oxford and Manchester, in collaboration with the Femicide Census, have found that in cases of women being killed by their sons and grandsons from 2009-2021, 70% involved perpetrators with mental health problems.

Yet help is too often either not forthcoming or ineffectual because, in the words of the British Medical Association, our mental health and social care systems are “broken”.

In its Mental Health Report 2024, the BMA pointed to key areas it said needed “urgent action” including underfunding; lack of trained staff in health and social care; and support systems operating in silos.

In our case, my son does not merit a dedicated social worker because he isn’t perceived to be in crisis. That he isn’t thriving physically or emotionally is not reason enough to intervene. The social care system is reactively predicated – action happens when a crisis presents, not when it might have been prevented. As for mental health, like many adults on the autistic spectrum, he falls through the gaps. There have been no mental health interventions since he turned 18 and ceased to be eligible for the Child and Adolescent Mental Health Service.

Yet my son desperately needs therapeutic input to help manage his anxiety, depression and emotions, alongside medications prescribed by an expert in his diagnoses, which include autism, pathological demand avoidance, ADHD and OCD. Medication is managed by a GP who, while competent, is not trained specifically in mental health and neurodivergent conditions.

Crucially, he needs help navigating his complex feelings towards me. A misfiring mother-son relationship isn’t, of course, confined to the neurodivergent, nor is it new. The Orestes complex, in which a son harbours the unconscious desire to kill his mother, is a parable dating back to ancient Greece. Friends complain of walking on eggshells around sullen adult neurotypical sons. But during flashpoints, their sons roll their eyes or behave peevishly. With a son who is hostage to unregulated emotions, flashpoints can be tragically fatal.

This is where societal structures should save lives. Mental health support that offers tools to manage emotions, joined up with a social care system that enables those with behavioural and social challenges to thrive. And residential and supported living that offers community, activities and cohesion, rather than simply warehousing vulnerable people.

Yet such a picture seems depressingly far off, and I fear this year won’t have been the last International Women’s Day marked by reports of failings that led to deaths and shattered families. It is inevitably parents, particularly mothers, who bear the brunt of systemic failures and step in to support volatile, troubled sons. That they may be in danger is often overlooked; Condry points to a case where a man’s medical notes said he shouldn’t be left alone with female staff, “but nobody had questioned whether he should live on his own with his mother”.

My son was removed from the house in 2018, not because he was attacking me but because there were minors present. I remain very involved in his care, but at times I feel unsafe. Sitting in the quiet of my house, it seems dramatic to write these next words, but had he remained living with me, I believe my picture could have been among those women. I can’t say it never will be.
