  • If You’ve Never Seen A Placenta

If you’ve never seen a placenta, this beautiful image shows the size of it perfectly. After birth, the placenta detaches from the uterus leaving a wound the size of a plate. Now imagine you had a wound that large on the outside of your body. You would be told by everyone to rest, look after yourself and take time to heal.

So why is it expected that new mothers should ‘bounce back’ so quickly after childbirth? When this is just one thing that needs healing; not to mention all the other physical, emotional and psychological changes we need to adjust to..

If you’re a new mum reading this, it’s ok to stay in bed with your baby. It’s ok to ask others for help. It’s ok to prioritise yourself and your baby. Get your family involved, ask your friends for some help, get a postnatal doula. Don’t rush your post-birth recovery, be easy on yourself. No better time to do so than just after you’ve given birth.
    .

ETA: On average it takes about 4-6 weeks for the uterus to shrink back to its pre-pregnancy size.

  • A Cold Cot Gave Us Extra Time With Our Baby

Today my beautiful baby girl, Ava Aurora Goulborne would be 13 days old…

12 days ago I went into hospital at 38 weeks pregnant to be induced and finally meet my beautiful baby. I didn’t even know if was having a boy or a girl at this point, but I did know I loved them so much after 9 months of growing, caring and nurturing; of course this also came with buying everything for the baby, setting up the nursery, creating our family home, setting up the next to me crib and stressing over what looked right where… which now seems so ridiculous.

13 days ago, my waters broke after being in the hospital for 15 hours alone without my partner due to covid-19 and new regulations. I looked down and there was blood, a lot of blood. The next thing I knew I was being rushed down to a delivery suite, calling Nathaniel on the way, lots of midwives and doctors all around me, hooking me up to machines, and bringing an ultrasound scanning unit in. Then I was told my baby has no heartbeat…

In that moment in time I was convinced they would still be delivering my beautiful awake baby, who had only been checked an hour before and was fine, in no destress and with a heartbeat. I broke down; How could this be? How did this happen? How is my baby dead? How? Why? What’s happened? My waters broke, now I should be in labour delivering my beautiful healthy baby into the world? How? Why? How? Why?

I spent the next 23 hours in labour drugged up to my eyeballs with the most amazing people in my life:

Nathaniel; the man of my dreams, my childhood sweetheart, the father of my baby. This amazing man sat next to me through everything and didn’t once let go of my hand whilst he is also living his worst nightmare.

My mum, was also there holding herself together better than any mother would/could whilst watching her own baby girl go through such a tragic and traumatic experience.

And, my best friend, my wifey – not once has this girl ever missed a big event in my life since we have been friends and this wasn’t going to be any different. The whole time she managed to laugh at the stupid things I was saying in my drugged up state and made me smile, even though I didn’t/don’t feel it is fair to laugh anymore.

After 23 hours I was ready to start pushing… just me, Nathaniel and our beyond amazing midwife brought our beautiful baby girl, Ava Aurora Goulbourne into the world at 23.56 on Thursday 16th April 2020., weighing 5lb 10oz.

She had the skinniest and longest legs I have ever seen on a baby, big feet to match her legs, the longest and softest black hair, big blue eyes, the sharpest and longest fingernails. She looked perfect, just like us and the perfect combination of her Mummy and Daddy.

Once she was born and we had got to hold her, the midwife continued to deliver my placenta. Once delivered, I asked if it was ok and she replied that it didn’t look right.
The cord hadn’t gone through the placenta as it should and the amniotic sack was covered in what looked like veins. I looked at it and it didn’t look like any ā€œnormalā€ placenta I’d ever seen. My midwife agreed and called for a second opinion and that person also agreed.

There’s a condition called Vasa Praevia and another condition called Velamentous Cord Insertion, which is what we believe to be the cause of Ava’s death.

Now this is where this all becomes so much more cruel, if that was even possible! The whole way through my pregnancy I’ve been scanned more than any normal pregnancy as I was deemed ā€œhigh riskā€ due to my baby being small and only in the 10th percentile. Not once was either condition picked up on an ultrasound scan when in fact both conditions CAN be detected by an ultrasound scan? I even had other symptoms that can be related to these such as swollen feet and reduced movements. Yet, not once was I offered further tests. I even went to the hospital full of cold and flu just as this Covid-19 business began and was then referred for but then refused a Covid-19 test, although I was showing all signs.

There are so many questions we have yet to have answers for.

Anyway, back to my beautiful baby girl… Once Ava was born and I was stable to get out of the delivery suite our midwife went off to find a ‘Cold Cot’. A cold cot is a normal looking moses basket with a very cold blanket at the bottom to keep sleeping babies cold, so parents like Nathaniel and I able to spend valuable time with their babies before having to say goodbye. On top of the cold cot enabling us to spend precious time with our daughter we were offered something called the ‘Rosemary Suite’. The Rosemary Suite is a self contained flat within the hospital where you are able to sleep in a normal bed with your partner, make food and make as many beautiful memories with your sleeping angel as you can.

We spent the most precious 3 days with our baby girl in the Rosemary Suite creating memories, dressing her, changing her, reading to her and taking her hand and footprints as keep sakes. Then it was time to say our goodbyes… this by far is the hardest thing I have ever had to do in my life.

All of these wonderful things that the hospital gave to make our tragic experience the best it could have been was all made possible by other parents and families of sleeping babies. We will forever be grateful for this.

So, what we would like to do in memory of our sleeping beauty Ava Aurora Goulbourne is to raise money towards making sure that all local hospitals have cold cots and anything else they may need to ensure grieving parents have the most perfect stay possible in their versions of the ‘Rosemary Suite’. We would also like to raise awareness for Vasa Praevia and Velamentous Cord Insertion, push for more tests to be completed throughout pregnancy, symptoms to be monitored and to ultimately prevent this happening to any other mummies and daddies like us.

Please help us raise money by donating on Ava’s memory page

  • Yogurt Bites Can Be Deadly

We had a big scare at our house yesterday. After Aliyah’s nap I put her in her high chair for her snack. I gave her a yogurt bite and turned to clean some bottles in the sink.

Checked on her. The first yogurt bite was gone so I gave her another. Turned my back to put away some dishes and when I turned back around (maybe 30 seconds later) her face was beet red and she was gagging. I screamed for brian while taking her out of the high chair.

As he called 911 I turned her face down and began smacking her back. It seemed like forever before she began expelling the lodged yogurt bites. What came out was globs of sticky and gooey yogurt bites with a consistency and feel just like elmers glue. (See picture)

Thank goodness for the quick response of the Fire Dept, Ambulance and police. (Yes, all three showed up) They were all wonderful and reassured us that we did everything right, but I had a melt down in the ambulance. The EMT said that yogurt bites are not a safe snack as they don’t really melt away as advertised. Instead they turn to goo.

The problem is that small children are not capable of clearing their throat, so when the goo gets caught, they can’t swallow it or expel it on their own and when they try to breath the slime goes into the airway.
Please let this be a warning to all parents and grandparents. I’m not saying that yogurt bites should be taken off the market. I’m just putting this out there so everyone is aware. It will be a long time before we try them again. 😬
***Yogurt bites are recommended for crawlers. Aliyah is a crawler. I do believe that recommendation should be changed to walker. AND LET THIS BE A HARD LESSON….DO NOT TURN YOUR BACK ON A CHILD WHO IS EATING ANYTHING!! I’ve learned my lesson. 😄

  • Couple Accused Of Murdering Baby Holly

Tiffany Tate, 21, and her partner Michael Roe, 32, are accused of murdering their daughter Holly Roe at home in Crowborough, East Sussex.

Holly died in hospital after paramedics were called to Tate’s house on report of a baby in cardiac arrest on September 10 2018, Lewes Crown Court was told.
A post-mortem examination later found Holly had suffered multiple ā€œshakingā€ injuries and died as a result of a traumatic head injury.

Her parents deny murder, but Roe told cops that he heard Tate say: ā€œSometimes she frustrates me so much I could throw her up against the wall. I’ve had her ready in my hands to do it”, jurors were told.
Holly was found to have a catalogue of historic injuries including 12 rib fractures both front and back, haemorrhages in the brain, spine and both eyes.

Some of the injuries were said to have been fresh while others may have happened up to several weeks earlier.
Sally Howes QC told the court Tate had trouble bonding with her baby.
The couple also struggled to feed her – with Holly frequently vomiting through her nose and mouth.
Tate is said to have lost patience with her daughter and eventually passed on night feeds to her partner.

Tate told police she once came home and found Holly ā€œbarking like a sealā€.
While Roe allegedly told her ā€œI think her airways are closingā€ and Holly then stopped breathing.
Roe did mouth to mouth and Holly was then fine.
When Roe was interviewed by police he claimed Tate had struggled looking after the baby.

He told officers he once heard her in the living room saying: ā€œWhy won’t you take this? Why won’t you do this for me? Why won’t you take this f*g bottle?ā€
On the day before she died Roe later said that during the day she was ā€œa bit paleā€ and ā€œher eyes were rolling quite a lot – one was going one way, one was going the otherā€.
Both parents had already raised this as a concern with the health visitor who had reassured them this was caused by wind.

Overall, Michael Roe described Holly that Sunday as a ā€œhappy, gurgly babyā€ and ā€œhappy, happy Holly being herselfā€.
That night he looked after the baby and he bottle fed her as normal as Tate went to bed to sleep.
She later told investigators: ā€œAs soon as I went to bed, my head hit the pillow, that was it, I was asleepā€.
Roe wept in the dock as the court was told he later went to bed, placed Holly in her Moses basket and went to sleep himself.
The jury heard Roe was later to tell the police ā€œSomething startled me and I woke upā€.

Miss Howes QC said: ā€œHe felt Holly’s head and it was cold. He then felt her chest which felt warm. He carried out a test for reflex – there was none.ā€
The court heard he woke Tate, gave Holly two rescue breaths to which she did not respond and then rang the emergency services for an ambulance.
Post mortem examinations found several historic brain bleeds, tears and bruising and traumatic injury to the spinal cord.
Lewes Crown Court heard subdural haemorrhages are a marker for traumatic brain injury and is consistent with violent movement of the head leading to a rupture of the blood vessels.

Pathologist Professor Safa Al-Sarraj, who examined Holly’s brain and spine found injuries from at least three different occasions from 48 hours before death to several weeks.
Miss Howes said: ā€œIt is the opinion of Professor Al-Sarraj that the pattern and extent of injuries in this case are those of non-accidental and abusive head trauma.ā€
Dr. Jo McPartland, a consultant paediatric pathologist, found bleeding in the eyes and optic nerves.
Roe and Tate deny murder and causing or allowing the death of a child. Both deny all charges.

  • All My Wife Has To Do Is Look After The Baby

I came home yesterday evening after working 12 hours. I went into the bathroom to get cleaned up and ready for dinner. I noticed my daughters bassinet in the bathroom…

I asked my wife if she had put her in there, and how she did in it. She said that she put her in it as she had showered during the day. We continued to talk about how good she had been and how much she’s growing up and so forth…

This morning I came home from the gym, turned the shower on, to get cleaned up for work. I turned to the door, and saw where my wife wiped away the steam from the glass, so that she could see our baby girl in the bassinet….

I literally just sat there and stared at the glass and smiled. I could see it, I imagined it, it was like I was there in the room with them. I could see Heather just looking through the glass and making faces at Lottie as she smiled and played in her bassinet! I just melted!!!

It’s so crazy to me, how the smallest things can make me so appreciative of my wife. It’s the little sacrifices my wife makes for this family, that would normally go unnoticed. From caring for our daughter 24/7, to caring for me, cooking, cleaning, taking care of the animals, and taking care of herself (yeah right, there’s no time for that)…

It just makes me stop and think…. I work hard… I work long 10-12 hours days… I get tired… I have stressful days… that’s my right, as the working member in the house hold right… to be catered to hand and foot when I get off?!?

All she does is have to take care of a baby….

So it should be that she cooks, and keeps the house clean, dishes washed, laundry clean and put up, animals tended to…. and I’m a man, have I mentioned my needs yet ?!?

I mean seriously, she’s at home all day after all!

Mannnnn…. I can’t tell you how much this fogged up glass means to me !

The fact that my wife can’t even shower without caring for someone else…. tending to someone else’s needs…. get a second to herself to relax

My wife doesn’t get to clock out, my wife doesn’t get the satisfaction of seeing a check deposited in the bank in return of her hard work, my wife doesn’t get to eat lunch with co workers, my wife doesn’t get to just walk outside and just take a deep breath….

This may be just a fogged up piece of glass to some, but to me it means so much more. It’s the little things like this that don’t go un noticed…. it’s the little things like this that constantly remind me how badass she is…. it’s the little things like this that make me fall in love with her all over again, Heather Williams!

Thank you for being the amazing woman you are… it doesn’t go unnoticed!

  • Do You See A Baby That Shouldn’t Be Born?

Tell me what you see when you look at this photo ?
Do you see a baby that shouldn’t be born ?
Do you see a baby who’s life is not valuable ?

The government does ! In the UK you can terminate a pregnancy up to 24 weeks, unless your child has Down Syndrome .. then it is legal to terminate up to 39 weeks and 6 days !

Layla was born with Down Syndrome early at 35 weeks and 6 days. That means the sweet little baby you are looking at in this photo, could have still been aborted on the day she was born. Just because she has an extra chromosome.

Heidi Crowter (who herself has Down Syndrome) is campaigning to change this .. For all babies in the womb to have the same legal standing.

  • I Just Don’t Know What’s Wrong With Me

I had a friend reach out to me this morning, she had a baby 2 weeks ago, was in tears, and didn’t know what to do.
    “Nikki, I just don’t know what’s wrong with me…”
And I remember feeling JUST like that. There was something wrong with me. Society paints this beautiful picture of bringing a baby home and everything being sweet and loving.
    Except that’s not reality.

You get home with this little life that is COMPLETELY dependent on you.
You come home with this body that is so foreign you’re not entirely sure it’s yours. A stomach that still looks 5 months pregnant, breasts that may or may not be leaking, stitches in places you never thought possible, and cramps like you can’t believe.

You come home having your body literally ripped apart to give life. With the hormones progesterone and estrogen plummeting causing changes in your brain chemistry.
You come home already exhausted and then have to be awake every two hours. Yet somehow you have to recover from birth, be a mom to your other children, clean the house, and somewhere love your partner. All while just wanting to sleep for a year.

You come home and are somehow expected to know what to do, how to do it, and love every second of it.
At my 6 week check up they handed me a piece of paper that asked whether I was a harm to myself or my baby. With neat little check boxes. I wasn’t in danger of harming myself or my child so obviously I was okay.
    Except I wasn’t.
It asked whether I felt distant from my child, having trouble connecting with her.
    I didn’t.

The thing was, I felt distant from everyone BUT her. I felt like we were on a little raft together floating in the middle of the ocean surrounded by thundering waves. I felt inadequate. Like I was gonna fuck it all up in the next minute. I felt unappreciated. Like this was just my life now. I was just a dairy cow, here for my child’s nourishment and that’s all I was. I felt overwhelmed with her need for me, and only me. No one else made her happy and I found some way to make it a bad thing and make it my fault. I felt like anyone would be better for my family. Like they would be better off without me.

I got all sorts of dark and twisty and overwhelmed in my head.
This is Post Partum Depression. And over 85% of women do not report these feelings because society has somehow convinced us that there is something wrong with us if we don’t love every second of motherhood. These are feelings that are NATURAL after giving birth. And the best part is most cases get better just by talking about it. Just talking. Call a friend. Call your mom. Tell your partner. TELL YOUR DOCTOR. Because you do NOT deserve to feel this way. You are NOT a bad mother for having these feelings. You are NOT broken.

You’re a Mama. And damn it you created LIFE in that body.
