  • Why You Should Never Go Down A Slide With Your Child

So every year I do a PSA on going down a slide with your child on your lap. When Meadow was 12 months old (I went down with Matthew first, but he was lucky) , I went down the slide with her on my lap and her foot got caught between me and the slide. This picture is the moment her leg was breaking. She’s still smiling… because it was happening at this exact moment.

When we went to the Emergency room, the super empathetic  doctor lectured me on how common this injury is. I had no idea. I thought everyone took their kids down the slide. I strongly feel every playground should have a warning sign, but since I’ve never seen one (and we go to ALOT of playgrounds), I share this picture every year in hopes that the pain Meadow felt and the guilt that I still feel will save other babies and parents from the same. Don’t ever go down a slide with a baby on your lap. There is no SAFE way to go down a slide with your little.

ETA: For all of the common sense posts… it is literally one of the top 3 reasons young children are seen in the ER during the Spring and Summer.

For everyone commenting on how I am holding my daughter. We didn’t start this way. She was centered on my lap. When I realized what was happening, I used my top hand to try to stop us and leaned to release her foot. I wasn’t riding down the slide with her on one side and leaning. That’s “common sense.”

  • There Is A Last Time For Everything

    The Last Time

From the moment you hold your baby in your arms,

you will never be the same.

You might long for the person you were before,

When you have freedom and time,

And nothing in particular to worry about.

You will know tiredness like you never knew it before,

And days will run into days that are exactly the same,

    Full of feedings and burping,

    Nappy changes and crying,

    Whining and fighting,

Naps or a lack of naps,

It might seem like a never-ending cycle.

    But don’t forget …

There is a last time for everything.

There will come a time when you will feed

your baby for the very last time.

They will fall asleep on you after a long day

And it will be the last time you ever hold your sleeping child.

One day you will carry them on your hip then set them down,

And never pick them up that way again.

You will scrub their hair in the bath one night

And from that day on they will want to bathe alone.

They will hold your hand to cross the road,

Then never reach for it again.

They will creep into your room at midnight for cuddles,

And it will be the last night you ever wake to this.

One afternoon you will sing “the wheels on the bus”

    and do all the actions,

Then never sing them that song again.

They will kiss you goodbye at the school gate,

The next day they will ask to walk to the gate alone.

You will read a final bedtime story and wipe your last dirty face.

They will run to you with arms raised for the very last time.

The thing is, you won’t even know it’s the last time

Until there are no more times.

And even then, it will take you a while to realize.

So while you are living in these times,

remember there are only so many of them

and when they are gone, you will yearn for just one more day of them.

    For one last time.

  • You Should Put A Label On Your Breastmilk Before I Drink It

Yes, I know I was in the wrong for using my colleagues coffee creamer or what I thought was coffee creamer, you could class it as theft I suppose, but when you have been on a long night shift and were in such a flap before you started work, what with my toddler having a melt down as mummy was off to work, and my husband moaning about bills I had completely forgot to bring my own.

I used a colleagues coffee creamer after all, we all work together and I used only a quarter, I did plan to leave a note and buy them a new one on my next shift, ok I forgot to leave a note it was a very busy shift.

The next time I returned to work I looked in the staff fridge and saw a note on the creamer (not the one pictured I didn’t have my phone on me but the message was very similar).

I was fuming and I mean fuming surely if you are going  to leave bodily fluids in the staff fridge it should be clearly labelled, that’s like me leaving a urine sample in an apple juice carton, common sense people!

Yes I shouldn’t of used it but it is so utterly wrong to leave bodily fluid in our staff fridge without some warning on it, my colleague clearly has time to leave rude notes but not the time to write Breast milk on it.

I have taken this to HR and they have told my colleague they should label all breast milk clearly in future, well my colleague is fuming, stated that we are being nasty to her for breast-feeding, which is not the case, all we need is clarification on what is being kept in the joint fridge.

Am I in the wrong for wanting to know whats kept in the fridge? Does my colleague have a right to be angry?

  • Relapse In Mental Health Is Hilarious Isn’t It

Demi Lovato overdosing in her $8mil home is the newest punchline for memes.

She joins the Bipolar relapse walk of fame in the company of 2007 Britney Spears and Amanda Bynes’ Twitter rampages.

    Relapse is hilarious.

Hilarious until it’s Robin Williams spending his whole life making others happy – just to end his own with a rope around his neck.

It’s all SO funny until it’s tragic.

Until it’s your sister’s lifeless body on the floor, accompanied by an empty bottle of her medication. Until it’s your son alone in his room with a razor to his wrist. Or your Mum who hasn’t left her bed for a week.

Mental illness looks like so many things.

It’s Carrie Fisher on 7 different medications, 3 times per day. It’s Jim Carrey and Ben Stiller and Stephen Fry.

It might look like your mate who hasn’t been to school in 2 weeks and won’t answer your calls. Or the neighbour you haven’t seen leave the house this month, and you can see the dirty dishes as a mountain through the window. It might be the teen on drugs or the girl you know who’s always too shaky to speak. One day, it might even be your own reflection.

It’s 1 in 4 people you know. 25% of us have a problem with our mental health and too many more have a problem with that.

    As Kevin Breel said,

“…unfortunately, we live in a world where if you break your arm, everyone runs over to sign your cast, but if you tell people you’re depressed, everyone runs the other way. That’s the stigma. We are so, so, so accepting of any body part breaking down, other than our brains. And that’s ignorance. That’s pure ignorance. And that ignorance has created a world that doesn’t understand depression, that doesn’t understand mental health.”

Demi, our love is with you. 🌻❤️

  • I Am Too Weak To Leave My Abusive Marriage

I am too weak to leave my abusive marriage. Walking on eggshells everyday. Trying to do all the house works while watching two little kids and still get yelled at, at the end of the day, if it is not up to his standards and he has had a bad day I may be hit . I feel sorry for the kids, so after each fight, I beg him not to leave, I do not want them to be raised without a father. After getting yelled at and abused, I asked him not to leave, I beg him, I apologise.

He is a wonderful, loving, supportive father, he is the bread-winner, he doesn’t mean to hurt me, he is just tired after a long day at work, I must be doing something wrong, not working hard enough myself or clearly don’t give him what he so needs after a long day.

This is how I felt three years ago I was clearly weak, NO I WAS WEAK, I had been broken down so much to think I was worthless that I believed it, no one would want me, I was scum.

When my daughter was five years ago she fell asleep in her loving fathers lap, she had an accident in her sleep and wet herself. He leapt up from his armchair launching our daughter across he room, he launched towards her, fists raised, ready to hit our little girl, I stepped in between them, I took the punch, and you know what I woke up to the reality I was actually living in, I was not the problem, HE WAS!

Once he was in bed, I packed a small bag for my children, and walked in the night carrying one child and holding the hand of another, I had no plan, nowhere to go, but anywhere was safer than living with him.

Three years later and I have a job, a new relationship where I feel safe to have a voice, to have a lazy day, to let my kids be kids, life has never been better, my children remember very little of their father but sometimes my daughter will wake up crying and remembers glass breaking and my tears, I did not realise at the time that she had heard the fights, that she had snuck into her baby brothers room (he was 2 at the time) she had held him and covered his ears so he could not hear.

Please if you are in an abusive relationship, GET OUT. GET HELP, you may think he will never hurt your children, but he will, he doesn’t have to physically hit them to cause pain, the pain of hearing their mother being abused is enough

  • Before Your Child Goes Back To School Show Them This

This summer holiday you will buy new school uniforms, neatly pack their book bags or back pack, polish their shoes but are you doing the most important thing?

There is one thing far more important than a freshly ironed uniform and a fresh hair cut that you can do for your child.

Give them a  tube of toothpaste and asked them to squeeze it out on to a plate or bowl. When they have emptied the whole tube, ask them to put all the toothpaste back in the tube. When they complain and moan that it is impossible

Say to them “You will remember this plate of toothpaste for the rest of your life. Your words have the power of life or death as you go to school, you are about to see just how much weight your words carry. You are going to have the opportunity to use your words to hurt, demean, slander and wound others. You are also going to have the opportunity to use your words to heal, encourage, inspire and love others. You will occasionally make the wrong choice; I can think of three times this week I have used my own words carelessly and caused harm.

Just like this toothpaste, once the words leave your mouth, you can’t take them back. Use your words carefully. When others are misusing their words, guard your words. Make the choice every morning that life-giving words will come out of your mouth. Decide tonight that you are going to be a life-giver in school. Be known for your gentleness and compassion. Use your life to give life to a world that so desperately needs it. You will never, ever regret choosing kindness.”

  • Your Child’s Behaviour Is Down To You

I have notice so many people talk about how their children behave badly and they are the “problem”. Have you ever sat back and thought where they have learnt this behaviour, why they may be acting out, ask yourself this, are you happy all the time? Do you sometimes feel grumpy or angry for no reason? Of course you do, you are human so why do you expect your children to behave perfectly all of the time or to smile when they are sad.

And quite frankly THEY ARE KIDS!!! They don’t know how to handle their emotions, or even how to grasp certain situations, they are learning, they may feel over whelmed or not know how to express how or why they are feeling a certain way at that point in time.

Let’s take a moment and look at our situations and think, how am I making these kids feel? How is my own emotions and the way I handle said emotions leading example to these kids, am I giving my child room to breathe and teaching them about their emotions or am I trying to repress them and stop the feeling.

We must not ask our children to change how they feel, if they do not feel comfortable kissing Auntie Edna then they should not be forced to, if they don’t feel like dancing don’t make them, if you want them to hold your hand to safely cross the road then you enforce it, children should only be made to do things which is positive or healthy for them, pretending that they are happy is only beneficial for you not them.

We must teach our children and sometimes even ourselves how to constructively express their feelings in positive ways.

We must teach ourselves it is ok for our children to be sad or angry sometimes, we must look at how we speak to our children because this can become their inner voice, we also must remember no one is perfect and behaves perfectly all the time.

  • Nurses Shouldn’t Be Scared To Call In Sick

My friend had a sky-rocket temperature, I did not have a temperature gauge at the time to take her temperature however she was burning up, to touch she was very hot, it was like touching a radiator. She was talking gibberish and was feeling somewhat rotten.

I had assisted my friend in having a bath and using the toilet, I had given her paracetamol to cool her down and helped her to eat and drink, you see me, and this friend are very close and have known each other for years so I look after her when she needs me, and vice versa. However, this whole situation could have been avoided.

You see this friend works for the NHS, the place where you go to get better.

This friend however feels victimized and bullied by the people whom employ her. I have also heard that other members of staff where she works feel the same.

My friend began to feel poorly on the Friday, she was due in work on the Saturday and Sunday, on the Saturday when she awoke she was very poorly, she had a temperature and she hardly had the strength to walk. When I told her that she needed to get some rest and cancel work she told me that she was already on a stage 1 disciplinary for sickness and that she was fearful of the manager.

The reason she was on a stage one disciplinary, she had been off 3 times (Each time for 1 day or less) in the space of 1 year, 365 days.

    The reasons being?

Work related injuries, a bad shoulder and sickness bugs contracted from cleaning up shit and vomit all day every day.

On the first day my friend went to work and came home 1 hour early due to nearly collapsing whilst doing her job.

On the Sunday my friend went into work again, she had stayed in bed until 12 noon, which is not like her at all, she then got up and dragged herself to work for her late shift, again I had helped her have a bath and dress. I advised her not to go into work, however she still feared losing her job or getting a bad reference when she leaves, which she intends on doing this year.

I HAVE a massive question to ask, why in the fuck as human beings do we allow someone to have authority over us to the point that we will go into work when we are dead on our feet in fear of punishment from management?

Why do we have to watch what we (nurses, care staff, doctors.) post on social media in fear of being taken into the office?

It is time to change, it is time new rules were bought in, yes there are people out there that take the piss, they should be dealt with. The ones that say they are ill and then go out and have a beer with the lads and plaster it all over social media. They are the people who should be facing disciplinary action.

However, when you have a nurse whom has done the job for over a decade and is rarely ill, when you have a nurse whom is as a 30-year-old woman fearful of her manager. Then we must start to question, when does enough become enough?

When does the welfare of he nurses, doctors and ambulance crew come into the picture?

When does the welfare of the families of these staff come into the picture?

When does the world wake up and say thank-you, how many people say thank-you to their nurse or doctor?

If there are any managers reading this, how many times do you thank your staff for their work? Or are you concentrating on the things that they have not done, are you concentrating on the fact that they are 2 minutes late as they struggle to get their kids into school on time and then into work. How many times have you asked your workers if they are ok? if there is anything you can do to support them at work?

I today have taken time off work to support my friend. My friend means more to me than any job ever will.

Maybe if we all took a stand when it was necessary to do so, then the care sector managers and higher staff would realise that they are not feared, and that fear is not a way to gain respect and control. To gain respect you must earn it. Respect is earned not given.

Bullies, they get nowhere, as there is always someone around the corner willing to stand up to them.

Remember people, the only person whom can allow someone to have authority over you, is you.
