  • To All The Mummies Who Don’t Look The Way They Used To

To all the Mummies who don’t look the way they used to…

That don’t feel as confident as they used to.

Who’s photos are of their beautiful babies instead of selfies because you can’t find a filter to fix the tired eyes or get a decent angle anymore.

To all the mums that feel like they have lost their identity.

All those who feel like they have lost friends along the way.

To the ones who forget what day of the week it is and can’t remember the last time you had a bath or toilet break alone.

I just want to tell you that you are amazing! So strong and beautiful.

And that it’s okay to cry and crave just 20 minutes alone.

You are a superstar… even if you don’t always feel like it.

Being a mum is hard work and constant.

Every day you make it work and get up the next day to do it all again. Be proud of yourself.

Every day you become stronger and more inspiring to other mums just trying to keep it together too.

  • It’s Sad How Relatable This Is To Some People

    ‼️ Trigger Warning ‼️

You pray for quiet, Inside your head the screams won’t silence.

I remember those days, the fear that’s in your bones, It just won’t go away.

The strangle holds, the insulting names,

The wound up shirt around his fist, the nose to nose beer stinking breath.

Thrown down onto the floor, so battered, bruised and sore.

The hush is all I need, to hush the misery

The hush that belongs to me, like the hush inside of dreams. Just be still and pray, and let the noise just fade away.

You just can’t stand the touch, affection weighs too much, You push everyone away,

Whipped so bad I pissed myself still with a beating from the belt. If this reminds you of home, you better know you’re not alone.

These are the memories we keep

We don’t want to show! We don’t want to show!

By now you need to know, You’re not alone.

    ~ Hush by Hellyeah

April hired me to tell her story. It’s not a pretty or fun story to tell. But it represents a big chunk of her life. Our hope with these photos is that we will not only start a conversation on domestic violence but show anyone going through it that you’re not alone and you can get help. It’s sad how many of you will relate to these photos and if these cause distress that is not my intention. I want people to remember behind the makeup and beautiful smile everyone has a story. Some harder to tell than others. Be kind.

  • Anxiety Is More Than Just Worrying

Anxiety is more than just worrying.

Anxiety is the restless nights of sleep, as you toss and turn. It’s your brain never being able to shut off. It’s the thoughts you over-think before bedtime and all of your worst fears become a reality in dreams and nightmares.

It’s waking up tired even though your day just started.

Anxiety is learning how to function with sleep deprivation because it took you until 2 am to shut your eyes.

It’s every text you wonder ‘how do I word this properly?’ It’s a double or triple text in case you messed up. Anxiety is answering texts embarrassingly fast.

Anxiety is the time you spend waiting for an answer as a scenario plays out in your mind of what they could be thinking or are they mad?

Anxiety is an unanswered text that kills you inside even though you tell yourself, ‘maybe they’re busy or will answer later.’ Anxiety is that critical voice that says ‘maybe they’re deliberately ignoring you.’ It’s believing every negative scenario you can come up with.

Anxiety is waiting. It always feels like you’re waiting. It’s the inaccurate conclusions drawn as your mind takes off and you have no choice but to follow it’s destructive lead.

Anxiety is apologizing for things that don’t even require the words, ‘I’m sorry.’

Anxiety is self-doubt and a lack of confidence both in you, yourself and those around you. Anxiety is being hyper aware of everyone and everything. So much so, you can tell if there’s a shift in someone merely by their tone or word choice.

Anxiety is ruining relationships before they even begin. It tells you, ‘you’re wrong, they don’t like you, they’re going to leave.’ Then you jump to conclusions.

Anxiety is a constant state of worrying and panicking and being on the edge. It’s irrational fears. It’s thinking too much, it’s caring too much. Because the root of people with anxiety is caring.

It’s sweaty palms and a racing heart. But on the outside, no one can see it. You appear calm and at ease and smiling but underneath is anything but that. Anxiety is the art of deception for people who don’t know you. And for the people who do, it’s a constant stream of phrases like, ‘don’t worry’ or ‘you’re overthinking this’ or ‘relax.’ It’s friends listening to these conclusions you’ve drawn and not really understanding how you got there. But they’re there trying to support you, as things go from bad to worse in your mind.

Anxiety is wanting to fix something that isn’t even a problem.

It’s the stream of questions that make you doubt yourself.

Did I lock the door before I left?’

Did I turn off the stove?

    Is the straightener still on?

It’s turning back around just to double check.

Anxiety is the uneasiness at a party because you think all eyes are on you and no one wants you there. Anxiety is that extra shot you take and it seems like you’re finally relaxing. Until you wake up the next day hungover, full of regret and wondering what you said to whom and do you owe them an apology?

Anxiety is the overcompensating and trying too hard to please people.

Anxiety is being everywhere on time because the thought of being late would put you over the edge.

Anxiety is the fear of failure and striving for perfection. Then beating yourself up when you fall short. It’s always needing a schedule or a plan.

Anxiety is that voice inside your head that’s saying ‘you’ll fail.’

It’s trying to exceed people’s expectations even if you’re killing yourself to do so. Anxiety is taking on more than you can handle just so you are distracted and not overthinking something.

Anxiety is procrastination because you’re paralyzed with fear of failing so you hold it off.

It’s the triggers that set you off.

It’s breaking down in private and crying when you’re overwhelmed but no one will ever see that side of you. Anxiety is picking up and trying again because the only thing worse than overcoming other people is overcoming you and your own demons.

It’s beating that critical voice that says, ‘you really fucked up.’ or ‘you should feel awful right now.’

Anxiety is the want and the need to control things because it feels like this thing in your life is outside of your control and you have to learn to live with it.

But more than anything anxiety is caring. It’s never wanting to hurt someone’s feelings. It’s never wanting to do something wrong. More than anything, it’s the want and need to simply be accepted and liked. So you try too hard sometimes.

And when you come across friends who begin to understand, they help you through it.

Then you realize this might be a battle you face every day but it’s one you won’t have to face alone.

  • Garden Weather Warning

    ⚠️ Attention ⚠️

I’ve wanted to cry every time I’ve seen this photo but it’s important to share.

I know the weather is a bit rubbish today but apparently another heatwave is on the way ☀️

Please please read this and take note…

2 years ago this baby suffered 2nd degree burns over 30% of his body from being accidentally sprayed with a garden hose and firefighters have issued a fresh warning recently.

👨‍🚒Hoping to prevent this type of accident from happening again, the fire department warned:

🚿 ‘’A garden hose exposed to direct sunlight during summer can heat the water inside the hose (not flowing) to 130-140 degrees Fahrenheit which can cause burns especially to children & animals.

✅ Let the water flow a few minutes to cool before spraying on people or animals”

It’s not something people would immediately think of but with the unusually hot weather lately, it’s worth sharing.

  • Birth Trauma-The Walls Are Caving In

    The room is caving in

My vision is blurred and skewed by tears and my eyes trying to squeeze so tight to block it out

    The pain

    The bright lights

The sensation of that needle and thread sewing me together

The most sensitive, central part of me

    Over

    And over

    “Open your legs please!”

“Why can’t you use the stirrups here?”

I don’t think they believe me

I swear my legs won’t go up there

    My pelvis might break open!

    They don’t know me

“Wider please!, just let your legs relax ”

    But I can’t

My legs won’t open, they won’t bloody relax

I want to snap them firmly shut

I want everyone to Fu*k off

    Where’s my baby?

    I have forgotten about him

He is quiet. Is he cold? Is he ok?

    I can’t focus

When will this torture be over?

    I’m shaking all over uncontrollably

    I am cold

I squeeze my husbands hand tightly

His tension so palpable yet helpless to do much

I don’t think I have any tears left

“Try the gas” they say, “I’ts good for you” they say

    I suck, hard.

Steady breaths in and out of the elephant -like tubing and hard plastic mouth piece

But I hate this even more now

    I’m Dizzy

I feel out of control, losing grip of my thoughts

Nauseated, a dread deep in my stomach

    Where’s the sick bowl?

I grip the moulded grey paper for dear life

    I can feel everything

    The pulling

    The tightness

    Pinching

    Prodding and poking

It ends with a swift invasion of painkiller tablets into my back side

    And finally its complete

    I am completely numb

They pack up and clear the room

Just as quick as they filled it

    Voices still friendly and cheery

    Their day continues.

    Their shifts end

But my nightmare has just began….

  • Don’t Let Your Kids Act Up

I picked my son up from his fathers today. He was grounded from his tablet before he went because I am no longer taking his attitude. I don’t know about other parents of six year olds, but the way he has been talking to me over the past 4-6 weeks is inexcusable and will not be tolerated anymore.

I had told him that if he was well behaved tonight, he could have his tablet back tomorrow.

We had a talk not only today on the way home, but multiple times over the weekend about how his bad choices had consequences. He was warned that he was going to have 3 strikes: tablet goes, then the tv goes, and then it’s the bedroom for the rest of the day.

Not even the first hour of being home, the attitude started. By attitude I mean dictating what he is and is not doing, not listening, telling me no, yelling at me, etc. I told him he was not getting his tablet back tomorrow. Then a few minutes later, the next attitude outburst came. TV is now taken away. 2 strikes. Then it was the 3rd attitude outburst. So now my son is eating dinner in his bedroom and afterwards will be in his bed staring at the ceiling for the rest of the evening. He needs to learn.

I’m not posting this to shame him. I posting this in case there are any other parents that are going through the same and doubting themselves. YOU ARE A GOOD PARENT. YOUR CHILD IS A GOOD KID. But they need to learn while they are still little because it’s even harder to teach them as they get older.

Before we know it our children are going to be young men and women and I sure am not letting my son into this world thinking it’s okay to act however he wants. I refuse to let my son be disrespectful to anyone. I refuse to let my son do as he wants instead of following the rules.

  • Hair Grooming Syncope Is Scary

I experienced one of the scariest moments of my life this morning with my little sister and I am going to put this out there because I had never heard of this in my life!

    Hair-grooming Syncope…

Look it up. This morning I was curling my little sister Gracie’s hair for church. I was maybe about five minutes in and she starts to gag a little and looks kind of pale. I asked her if she was going to get sick and she shook her head yes. I get my little daughters out of the bathroom and start to hold her hair up for her as she leans over the toilet. 30 seconds later… she looks at me. She is extremely pale with blue lips and starts to pass out.

Her pupils got really big and I caught her. I start screaming for Dale to come help. Gracie has a blank stare and look on her face and is completely unresponsive and limp for about a minute. Her hands were also shaking. Very seizure like. She then comes back to and says she feels much better. She says she remembers hearing us talk but couldn’t see us. I was crying. She was very confused. My mom and dad rush to my house and a few hours in Children’s hospital, an EKG, and a head scan later… she is fine.

Turns out there is something called hair-grooming syncope affects kids from ages 5-13. They said they see about 1-5 cases a year. Turns out brushing, curling, braiding, or drying can cause nerve stimulation on the scalp and cause some children to have seizure like symptoms. I HAVE NEVER HEARD OF THIS BEFORE! We were told if she ever starts to feel nauseous or light headed while getting her hair brushed to sit down and take a break. I am putting this out there for others to see. If a kid ever complains of their belly hurting or feeling light headed while they are getting their hair done, make sure they take a seat and keep a close eye on them! Apparently very rare but so scary to see it happen!

  • His Ashes Made It To Florida

His ashes made it to Florida! So one of the owners of a hotel, Judi was walking on the beach this morning cleaning up the junk that washed into shore and finds a bottle with a message in it.

There is also some sand and 2 one dollar bills. Once we get it open and read the notes we find out that it is in fact NOT sand. It is the ashes of this woman’s husband of 70 years named Gordon. She writes that He loved to travel so she sent him traveling in a bottle with a note and money for someone to call home and tell her where he landed.

He started at Big Pine Key in March of 2012 and then went to Islamerada where someone found him. They added a note and sent him traveling again and he landed on our beach in Key Colony. Judi called the wife in Tennessee who was excited to know of Gordon’s travels!

Judi added her note, we put him in a rum bottle (you know added a little fun to his trip) with the three notes. We added another dollar in case Gordon travels far and a long distance call is needed. We will be having a memorial service or celebration of his life on our beach later today before sending him on his way again.

  • Dear Mummy I Forgive You

My daughter and I just had a knock-down, drag-out bedtime hour. Finally, about ten minutes ago, I put her to bed and through clinched teeth said “I love you, Holland, but not another word tonight. You are going to sleep now. I’m done fussing over stuffed animals.”

    “Mommy?”

I paused on the way out the door, literally biting my tongue I was so frustrated.

    “What is it, Holland?”

“I DO have one more thing to say.”

Of course she did. She was standing on the bed with her hands on her hips, too. Her hair was wild and she was using her arm to wipe her tears and snot away from her face.

“Mommy,” my three year old said, staring me down with venom in her tiny voice…

    “I FORGIVE YOU!!!”

Then she laid down and cried and honest to goodness, for a hot minute, I didn’t know what to do.

The way she said “I forgive you”, made it sound like cuss words.

I walked over to the bedside and leaned over.

“Baby girl, do you know what forgiveness means?”

She was still sniffling, her face shoved deep into her Little Mermaid pillow.

    “Yes,” she muttered.

I really had to hear this.

“It means you were wrong, and I’m tired of being mad, and now I’m going to sleep and my heart won’t have a tummy ache.”

So there you have it, folks.

Tonight I was taught a lesson in forgiveness by a three year old. It was a gut punch, too. And you’re dang right I climbed in that bed and loved on her.

Because to be honest, MY heart had a bit of a tummy ache.

I was reminded by my toddler to never go to bed in anger. Because when you do, your heart will have a tummy ache.

And you know what? I’ve been alive for 35 years, and I’ve got to give it to her:

    She’s not wrong.
