  • Possibly The Worst Thing A Child Can Swallow

The last time I held my 20 month old son, and saw his eyes open was at 9pm on 3/3 as he was taken from my arms screaming and crying as he was rushed back to surgery to remove what we thought was a nickel stuck in his throat. It has felt like a lifetime going without his hugs, kisses and hearing his sweet voice. I never imagined how important those little lips and arms meant to me until they were taken away from me.

I have contemplated sharing his story because I felt only the immediate family needed to know the critical situation my son is in. But as I keep talking to nurses and replaying the night it all happened I feel it’s only right to share with all my friends and family and their families and friends so that this can never happen to anyone’s young child ever again.

It started as a normal night. My husband was outside grilling burgers while I was cooking food in preparation for the burgers. In a split second our night changed as our son knocked on the glass door proudly showing his daddy what he had in his mouth. My husband jumped up immediately opening the door but just as fast as my husband acted so did my son. My son ran away swallowing what appeared to be a nickel. My husband yells for me saying he swallowed a coin.

Being a nurse, I quickly assess my son for signs of choking. He was breathing and still pink. He didn’t seem to be struggling. He was crying, screaming “quarter, momma!” (He calls all coins quarter). He then begins to gag and vomit intermittently telling me it has not passed through his throat.
We rush him to the ER where they take an x-ray showing the coin in the middle of his throat. Docs were reassuring about the coin. All we needed was for it to be taken out and we’d be able to go home that night. No big deal.

Afterwards, we were sent to Children’s hospital where they take another X-ray to make sure the coin had not traveled further.
This time the surgeons come back with a different demeanor. They asked if there was any chance our son had access to a button battery? My husband and I look at each other and immediately said no, absolutely not. No way.
And immediately it hit me. My food scale. We were weighing our food as we cooked and somehow my son got ahold of it and was banging it on the kitchen floor. I remember my mother-in-law yelling at him and removing it from him. But we didn’t think to look for the battery from the back. Maybe others would’ve but it didn’t even cross our minds to look for a battery we so rarely see.

So reality began to sink in because this is possibly the worst thing he could’ve swallowed.

My son was rushed to the OR and prepped for surgery at 9pm. The surgery was supposed to take 15-30 min but after an hour we finally got a call from the nurse saying the surgeon is having trouble removing the battery so they have called in the ENT surgeons for assistance. An hour later we received another call saying the battery was removed and he was moved up to the PICU.

The Surgeons were reassuring, the battery was removed after 5 hours of ingestion so minimal damage occurred but we wouldn’t know the extent of damage until the MRI 24 hours later.

Possibly The Worst Thing A Child Can Swallow
Possibly The Worst Thing A Child Can Swallow

My son is currently in the PICU intubated, on pain meds, antibiotics and sedation. We received the MRI results last night which were not as bad as it could’ve been but still bad. We were told he is on the better end of the “horrible scale”
The positive end of the battery apparently created a charge with the negative charge in the blood of the vessel behind his esophagus. This created a magnet between the battery and blood. The battery began to erode my sons esophagus tissue, leaving him a hole in his throat. The magnet effect is why the surgeons had such trouble removing it which ultimately led to prolonged exposure and worsening the breakdown of his esophagus.

He also has an infection in his chest due to fluids from his mouth and tummy leaking into his chest through his hole, introducing bacteria in a place they should not be.
We do not know when my son will be extubated. He was supposed to be extubated last night but 24 hours later he is still intubated.
My sons life has changed so much because of this tiny battery. He will no longer be able to eat or drink through his mouth until this hole heals. My son still breast feeds, he is no where near being ready to stop (his choice, not mine 😁) but because of this injury the decision was made for him and it breaks my heart.

He is on antibiotics to cure the current infection he has but will continue to be on antibiotics until his hole closes. We will be under constant monitoring while in the hospital but as well outpatient because our journey doesn’t end once we leave the hospital. We will have continuous ENT follow up appointments to ensure that his scare tissue continues to grow and doesn’t end up causing a stricture which would ultimately narrow his esophagus causing him to choke and gag when consuming things. This would mean another surgery to loosen up the tissue. As well, I’m sure there is much more we are not aware of.

I’m sharing my son’s story because these tiny batteries are in our everyday household items as well as the toys the kids play with. Most of us wouldn’t think any harm could come from a tiny thing like a button battery but our world couldn’t be rocked more because of the tiny thing. All the surgeons, doctors and nurses say this is not new to them. Children consuming these tiny batteries happens on a daily basis.
I never knew anything could happen quite like this…. not until it actually happened.

  • Covid19 Here’s What You Should Know

    STOP❗️ Don’t panic. Covid19. Here’s what you should know:
    👩🏼‍⚕️
Covid19 is basically a first cousin of the common cold. If you’ve had a cold you’ve likely had coronavirus. But covid19 is stronger than most other coronaviruses. 👩🏼‍⚕️
    What are the symptoms?
Sore throat, fever, runny nose, cough, shortness of breath, aches and pains, abdominal pain and pneumonia in severe cases.
    👩🏼‍⚕️
    How does it spread?
Coronaviruses are spread by droplet contamination. This means it’s spread from person to person when we cough/sneeze on one another (🤦🏼‍♀️) or when we touch a contaminated surface. This is why coughing in to your elbow and sneezing in to a tissue is so important. 👩🏼‍⚕️
    How can I prevent spread?
The virus can’t infect you through your skin. It enters our body through the nose and mouth mostly. So don’t touch your face. Regular hand washing with soap and water is critical. The soap dissolves the outer layer of the virus and kills it. Alcohol hand gel in between hand washing and regular wiping down surfaces is also helpful. 👩🏼‍⚕️
    Why are people concerned?
We, as doctors, are worried about our vulnerable patients. For most people reading this – YOU WILL BE FINE! It’ll be a sniffly headcold. But for about 2-3% of people it will be severe. We don’t have treatments or a vaccine for this yet so it’s making our job of protecting weaker patients more difficult. We’re also concerned about healthcare workers being out sick and therefore not being able to deliver healthcare effectively.
    👩🏼‍⚕️
    Who is vulnerable?
People with conditions like asthma, diabetes, cancer, heart disease and anyone who’s on immune suppressing medicines eg. Methotrexate for rheumatoid arthritis. Over 65’s are also particularly at risk. 👩🏼‍⚕️
    What can vulnerable people do?
Things like avoiding public transport and avoiding large gatherings can help. 👩🏼‍⚕️
What are GP’s doing to prevent spread?
We’re asking all patients with symptoms to phone first so we can assess over the phone. This helps protect patients in the surgery and healthcare workers.
    👩🏼‍⚕️
Do I need a face mask?
No. These masks are for patients and healthcare staff. If you have more q’s go to stories👉🏼

  • Rules With Dealing With Family Now I’m An Adult

I have rules to dealing with family now that I am an adult.

    1. You will not talk to me any type of way because you’re older than me. I’m still an adult
    2. Don’t confuse my love for you as a weakness. I will cut you off.
    3. I don’t owe you anything. Anything I do is out of love. Not obligation.

    4.Respect is a mutual thing.

    1. I am not a bad person for calling out toxic behaviors/people just because they’ve been like that for years.
    2. I don’t have to tell you my business & if I do it’s not yours to tell.
    3. I don’t have to consult with you regarding my personal life choices.
    4. If I want your opinion, I will ask for it. Unsolicited advice from people who project their insecurities is the worst.
    5. I am not obligated to deal with you because you’re family.
    6. If family events stress me out, I will not attend.

  • To Our Daughters

    TO OUR DAUGHTERS

🌟 You were born made of softness, sweetness and love, but with a will so strong it could bend iron – despite what society may tell you, you don’t have to lose one or the other. Keep them all, they are yours. Aren’t you blessed?

🌟 Your super-power in this life, is that little voice inside of you that tells you when something isn’t right, listen to it. Likewise, listen to it when it’s saying yes yes yes.

🌟 Your self-worth is controlled by you, only you. Never put it in someone else’s hands.

🌟 You are equal to, not better than, but equal to, anyone else you may ever come across in this life. Never feel inferior.

🌟 Never lose your joy. No matter how serious your ambition, or how driven your path is, remember we are here for only a short time and life is to be lived and loved.

🌟 Comparison will not propel you ahead, rather it will keep you back from the real treasures in this world. Stop comparing. Better still, never start.

🌟 Fear is an instinct but unlike your inner voice it can be misleading. Never let fear hold you back from the wonders you could see.

🌟 Do not let society, or anyone, tell you what beauty looks like. If you feel beautiful, you are. If you see beauty, it’s there. Your beauty is an emalgimation of everything that makes you you, and it is utterly unique. Embrace that, early.

🌟 You don’t have to choose between being a warrior, a princess, a lady or a woman. You can be all of them in one and most women are, every day. Strong isn’t the word; we have the ability to be all things to all people but remember yourself, put yourself first sometimes too.

🌟 Lastly, it is okay to not be okay. It is even better if you talk about it. Darkness cannot shine through light, but light can shine through darkness. You can be amazing and admired whilst admitting your weaknesses and discussing your fears and anxieties. Even more so in fact.

Oh and….never let anyone dull your sparkle, you were born to shine.

  • A Message From Italy

    A message from Italy 🇮🇹❤️

The situation in Italy is really complex as the health system is about to collapse and doctors are working relentlessly. The virus is not just a “bad flu”: too many people need to get hospitalised to get oxygen but there are not enough spaces in hospitals.

I see posts like “fuck the virus”, or “virus I don’t fear you”, or “let’s party anyway” and these make me worried. People, please wake up and start being responsible. Those of my age have less chances to get sick, but they may pass the virus to older people, or those with a weaker immune system, who will need to go to hospital. It could be our parents, it could be people that are dear to us. But places in hospital are limited. Let’s do it for them or for our heroes: our doctors who are working non stop for us.

What is happening in Italy, sadly, is probably only the tip of an iceberg that is a GLOBAL crisis. It came from China in no time. It’s spreading all over Europe. I really hope it slows down, but to do that we ALL need to take the necessary measures.

We need to adopt the Chinese method and stay at home. We need to sacrifice on our lives a bit to help it from spreading. I know, you really want to board that flight for a tropical destination, or go to that birthday party or concert. I know we have all got so used to get anything in life, so easily. I am no different: I also really wanted to go to Disneyland with my daughter this upcoming weekend, and to DJ for a lot of events in the upcoming weeks. But it’s time to sacrifice. Get your responsibility hats on.

Work from home, stay at home. Take this time to reflect on you, to develop a new hobby, to stay with family. To just stop and think a bit.

Only united we can make this crisis stop as soon as possible. 💪

  • Bulk Buying Calpol Can Kill Sick Children

So just a little story for all the stupid people in this world which I have never shared, especially the photos but something needs to be done about this and people seriously need to realise the risk they are putting on other when there is no need

Not many people know this because I wasn’t strong enough to talk about it as it was terrifying but my little Teigan contracted sepsis LAST MAY from tonsillitis she has a severely low immune system & she was extremely unwell & just a few hours later calling 999 or hadn’t had extensive training in all areas with work she would have quite likely have lost her life.

So anyway fast forward to now, she has been extremely unwell again for the past 2 weeks and we couldn’t get to the route of the problem, today we finally did as she now has infection markers she has tonsillitis again Most people will think oh just tonsillitis which yes maybe to many children but not Teigan her body seriously reacts to these things.

Now as you can imagine this mummy is now a paranoid mess, she got this poorly within 12 hours and it can happen so so quickly, I cannot stress how important it is that I keep her temperature down, antibiotics & full of medication due to her body being so weak and immune system being so low to prevent the sepsis from reoccurring.

So we come out the doctors I have calpol at home but need calpol and ibuprofen to alternate for her, we went to THREE chemists & TWO shops before I found any Ibuprofen for her!!! So for all you fucking stupid hoarders , if you have a child that is completely well & has no need for regular medication you DO NOT need 8 bottles of calpol at home that will sit in your cupboard for 2 years, we are not in crisis and the only conversation that has been had is schools and social gatherings potentially being cancelled and until there is just talk about potential of not being able to leave your homes, actually even then it’s not going to go on forever !!! Just spare a little thought for us parents that’s children really do need it!!!

Feel free to share so people can start seeing how stupid they are being and how much they are putting others at risk due to there selfishness! I have honestly never been so angry in my life!! Just a photo of what could potentially reoccur which I will do everything in my power for it not too but others may not be as aware/clued up just to get the point across a bit more!!!

  • Mums Don’t Want This For Mothers Day

Just got back from my food shop and whilst out I spotted the Mothers day Isle. Whilst this stuff is cute in its own way, Mothers of young children and teenagers do not want this shite. We really don’t.

If you really want to show appreciation on the day that should really be called “Sorry your fanny got wrecked” then listen up.

    This is what we want.

We want to piss in peace. We want two minutes alone in the bathroom without a little human staring at our bits like it’s going to start firing out ping pong balls. Nothing magical is going to happen so for the love of God, leave us alone.

We want you to get dressed. We want to hand you your clothes and not have to find you twenty minutes later wearing nothing but your underwear and one fucking shoe.

Move your own shit. How simple is that? This applies to husbands too. Shoes and coats have a place so use them!
Same as toys. Although put them away properly! My 6yr old once put her creepy arse doll in the fridge and I had a fucking heart attack getting the milk out.

We want to cook a meal and have it eaten without fuss. Without cries of desperation that you no longer like pizza despite having a fucking meltdown the day before that you couldnt have it because I’d cooked sausage and mash.

Stop losing your fucking socks. Tesco thinks I gave birth to centipedes.

Boys. Wipe the damn toilet seat.

Girls. Sit properly on the toilet cos you keep spraying and your brothers get the blame.

Most importantly…….. When you get put to bed, Go to sleep!
Seriously kids it’s the only time we get to feel human. Not only that but when you’re pissing about till gone 10pm, I’m too tired to do anything remotely naughty with Daddy! You might think I’m old but mummy needs some dick if I’m going to tolerate your tantrums over your fucking sock feeling funny.

Pretty certain none of the above will happen though so I’ll smile politely and with gratitude at whatever you get me because you’re my world and who wants full bladder control anyway?? ❤️

  • There Are Still Great People In This World

“My husband and I were in the ER and an elderly lady was wheeled out to leave. She told the receptionist she had no family or ride home. I was saddened to see some (not all) of the employees lack of concern as to how she would get home.

All of the sudden this AMAZING gentleman who had been waiting with his wife approached the lady and told her he would gladly take her home. This man not knowing her or having a clue where she lived volunteered his time to care of this lovely woman. She offered to pay but he kindly declined like any good man would. As he went to get his truck I wheeled her out and put her in the vehicle.

As I watched them drive away my only thoughts were ‘there are still great people in this world’ ‘and ‘We have to care for our elders like this nice man.’ I did get a little info from his wife. His name is Jeffery and he is military here at Ft.Campbell KY.

Not only does this man serve our great country, he serves his great little community. I just wanted to give a little recognition and respect to this man. Jeffery, if you see this, just know your deeds are recognized and appreciated by your community. Thank you Sir for serving our country and our community.”
