For working parents with school-aged kids, summers are a struggle.

Most of us can’t take two months off work, leading to the logistical feat and financial strain of trying to cobble together a schedule that occupies our children when we are not on a family holiday.

If you’re one of the parents navigating summer camps for your kids, here’s how to make it easier on your wallet and your mental load.

Summer camp is expensive, so you need to plan well in advance. Let’s start with day camps, which typically admit children aged four and older. I asked parents on social media how much they were paying, and many who responded pegged day camp costs at $200 to $400 a week, minimum. For specialty camps such as hockey, dance or science, the weekly costs skyrocket to double or triple that.

Don’t forget about the additional costs: lunches and snacks, as well as the cost of shuttling kids to and from camps, which gets trickier if you have to take multiple kids to multiple locations. And the cost of before and after-care, since most day camps end well before 5 p.m.

Overnight camps, generally for kids aged seven and older, are more expensive. Most parents who reached out to me reported costs closer to $1,500 – or more – a week.

All of this can mean forking more than thousands of dollars to cover summer camp fees, with many parents who told me they budget $4,000 to $5,000 per summer for camps, and one parent saying she spent $11,000 on summer camps this year.

Erin Estok lives in Ontario’s Halton region with her two young children, aged 5 and 7 months. She said if she put her oldest daughter in camp every week of the summer and used after-care, which she needs as a working parent, it would cost $3,000 to $3,500. “And those aren’t for the specialty or coolest camps, just the average ones,” Ms. Estok said. “To put it in perspective, $3,500 is more than our annual family vacation.”

This is where subsidized or more affordable camp options can help to reduce fees – for example, city-run day or non-profit camps tend to be much more affordable than private camps. There are also non-profits including Kids in Camp and various other non-profits and camps that provide financial assistance to families for overnight and day camps. Some camps also offer sibling or multi-week discounts, or instalment payment options. It’s also worth noting that summer camps count as a child care expense, so they can be deducted from income during tax season (the amount varies for preschoolers and older children).

“Affordable options, while they exist, tend to sell out incredibly fast, might not be what your kid enjoys, or aren’t necessarily convenient to get to,” Calgary mom-of-two Alyssa Davies said in a social media message.

To make matters worse, the summer camp booking scramble begins in January and February, a time when parents have just finished paying Christmas bills, which means balancing camp fees with postholiday credit card bills. Which parent has thousands of dollars laying around after the holidays?

“I think the most frustrating part is the fact that you have to have your whole summer planned in February in order to get registered,” Georgetown, Ont., mom-of-two Courtney Craig-Campbell wrote in a message. ”I’ve barely recovered from Christmas and I am dropping thousands of dollars on camp.”

Planning ahead is key to budgeting for camps, and ensuring your kids snag a spot, especially if you’re prioritizing more affordable city-run day camps.

The experience of booking is cutthroat and time-consuming, described to me by many parents as being akin to The Hunger Games or trying to get tickets to a Beyoncé concert. One mom in my area (Prince Edward County, Ont.) said she was at her computer refreshing her browser non-stop to get a spot in a local arts centre’s day camps, which sold out in three minutes on opening day in February.

Entrepreneur Linsay Moran, a parent of two who lives in Toronto, has felt the pain of booking camps for her children. She, like many other parents I spoke to, keeps a spreadsheet outlining a list of camps, their cost, which weeks the kids are booked for, and their registration dates.

While it’s expensive and time-consuming, for many parents camps are the only option to occupy their kids while they’re working.

“It creates a hamster wheel that you have no choice but to be on,” Ms. Moran says. “Miss the deadlines, your kids miss out on camp spots. I have some friends who just refuse to participate in the madness, but then come June/July they’re panicking as they don’t have activities lined up for their kids and they have to take what’s left over.”

As someone whose kids are too young for camp, I’m thinking about how I can set aside money now in a savings account to prepare, and starting to scope out options in my area. After hearing the frustration, exasperation and massive mental and financial burden camps cause for my peers, as a parent I’m dreading summer vacation – even if my kids will live for it.

A family have praised Street Rangers who came to their aid after their baby was scalded at a York coffee shop.

Three rangers stepped up to help after the accident left the nine-month-old baby with scalding on a large part of her leg.

It happened at the Pret A Manger on Parliament Street on 6 March.

The team from the Street Rangers, run by Eboracum for the York BID, stepped in quickly to provide emergency first aid treatment.

An ambulance had been called and due to the service being busy there was up to two hours wait time. 

So one of the rangers made arrangements for a family member, who wasn’t familiar with York,  to drive as close as possible in order to take the baby to hospital. 

In the meantime, they continued with the first aid with cold running water and reassurance.

The baby’s grandfather contacted Eboracum after the incident to offer his thanks.

He said: “I am writing to express our heartfelt thanks to Dave, Tom and Scott (Rangers), who attended Pret A Manger in the centre of York city centre when our 9 month old granddaughter accidentally scalded her leg. 

“They arrived within minutes of the accident in response to a call from Pret.

“Dave immediately took control of the situation and helped our daughter to the kitchen area to put the leg under cold water.

“We had already poured cold water on the leg, but Dave advised us to run under cold water for a further 20 minutes, before wrapping leg in clingfilm and then going to A&E.”

One of the rangers went with the grandfather to the car park and guided him to a spot close to the coffee shop. The family then drove to York Hospital.

The grandfather said: “Following assessment by the A&E doctor we were advised the scalding wasn’t too severe and the early treatment by your team was the correct course of action.

“Our granddaughter was discharged after about four hours.”

The baby has since had follow up appointments. All the doctors confirmed the critically important benefit of the initial first aid, without which she would have had a longer recovery period.

The grandfather added: “Please pass on our sincere and heart-felt thanks to Dave, Tom and Scott – they made a very difficult and distressing situation more bearable.

“Please also let them know she is doing well and should have no lasting effects.

“We will look out for them the next time we have a trip to York to thank them again personally.”

Jack Doohan has shared what his father, Mick, said to him after he slammed his Alpine into the wall on the first lap of his home grand prix.

The Australian lost control of his car after only a handful of corners in the torrid conditions at Albert Park, leaving him a passenger and powerless to prevent the shunt.

Coming out of Turn 5, the 22-year-old put his foot down, but a white line on the asphalt caused him to lose traction as his Alpine careered into the barrier in response.

He was not the only rookie to fall foul of the tricky white lines. Racing Bulls driver Isack Hadjar crashed on the second corner of the formation lap and Liam Lawson retired late on after an incident at the same part of the circuit.

With his father being a five-time motorbike champion, in the class that has since become MotoGP, Doohan is surrounded by a strong motorsport structure, something that is particularly useful given the seemingly omnipresent danger to his F1 seat.

One of Team Enstone’s four reserve drivers, Franco Colapinto, is knocking on the door of a full-time drive and Doohan is under considerable pressure to perform, something his crash in Melbourne will do little to alleviate.

He had turned in a strong weekend up to his lap one mistake, showing solid pace that could have seen him through to the final stage of qualifying, had it not been for Lewis Hamilton’s spin and the subsequent yellow flags.

After getting out his car following his short-lived grand prix, Doohan cut a defiant figure, focusing on the positives of his weekend instead of its bitter end.

When asked by RacingNews365 whether he had taken the opportunity to speak with his father after his first F1 retirement, the Alpine driver explained they had not yet had to chance to have a full conversation.

“No. No, he hasn’t,” Doohan replied. “He came up behind me, I think he said: ‘there was a white line, a bugger.’”

He reflected on the adversity his father faced during his illustrious career, underscoring how valuable that experience is to him.

“But for sure, he had many times where he was scraping along the ground at much higher speeds than me as well,” he added.

“So, at the end of the day, I’m just going to have to learn to accept this and I’ve got no better person in my corner [than his father] that has been through that and been through tough times and bounced back.”

16th March 2025 – (Seoul) The late South Korean actress Kim Sae-ron’s mother has publicly levelled accusations against actor Kim Soo-hyun and his agency, Gold Medalist, following her daughter’s tragic death by suicide on 16th February. The 24-year-old actress, renowned for her early success as a child star, was found dead at her residence in Seoul. Police have ruled her death a suicide.

In a statement issued through the South Korea-based YouTube channel, The Garosero Research Institute, Kim Sae-ron’s mother accused Soo-hyun of dating her daughter while she was a minor. She demanded a public apology from the actor and his agency, alleging that the agency manipulated narratives surrounding the relationship. Gold Medalist has denied the claims, maintaining that the pair’s relationship began only after Kim Sae-ron reached adulthood.

The allegations have sent shockwaves across South Korea’s entertainment industry, with brands rapidly distancing themselves from Kim Soo-hyun. Italian luxury fashion house Prada, for whom Kim had served as an ambassador since December, terminated its contract with the actor. In their announcement, Prada stated that the decision was “mutual” and aligned with its values.

Seoul-based cosmetics brand Dinto also severed ties with the embattled actor, citing “substantial grounds” that rendered the continuation of their collaboration “unfeasible.” The company emphasised its commitment to maintaining consumer trust.

Other brands, including outdoor clothing label Eider, bakery chain Tous Les Jours, and supermarket chain Homeplus, have similarly begun removing Kim’s likeness from their promotional materials. Industry insiders suggest that some companies are adopting a cautious approach, awaiting further developments before making definitive decisions about their contracts with the actor.

The controversy has also reignited focus on Kim Sae-ron’s troubled history with Gold Medalist. In 2023, the agency issued a legal notice demanding repayment of KRW 700 million (approximately $528,000) following the actress’s drunk driving incident in 2022. The Garosero Research Institute has speculated that unresolved financial disputes with the agency may have contributed to Kim Sae-ron’s untimely passing.

The backlash against Kim Soo-hyun has intensified due to his perceived silence and lack of a public apology. While Gold Medalist acknowledged the relationship last week after leaked photographs surfaced, the actor’s failure to address the allegations has fuelled public discontent.

Roblox co-founder and CEO Dave Baszucki has a message for parents who are concerned that the games platform is an exploitative place that makes money off of child labor and exposes their kids to online harm, toxicity, predators, and extremist violence: Just keep them off of it.

“My first message would be, if you’re not comfortable, don’t let your kids be on Roblox. That sounds a little counter-intuitive, but I would always trust parents to make their own decisions.”

That direct quote comes from a BBC interview with Baszucki, who insists that “tens of millions” have had “amazing experiences” on the platform, that the corporation is utilizing multiple tools – many of which are AI-driven – to enforce safety, and that it offers robust parental controls as well as acts on reports of those who break “civility,” from timeouts to contacting law enforcement.

Baszucki dug in his heels about Roblox’s safety when the BBC presented evidence of how simple it is for users of different ages to use the platform to arrange meet-ups outside of Roblox and a list of games on the platform including “Late Night Boys And Girls Club RP” and “Shoot down planes… because why not?” On the former matter, he claims Roblox is so safe that people felt compelled to use other platforms, while on the latter he argues that moderation zeroes in on “not just […] the title of the experience [but] on the content of the experience as well.”

Baszucki also compares himself to Walt Disney, saying that building Roblox is “a little like having the opportunity he had a long time ago when he was designing the Magic Kingdom.” He also replied to a question about summarizing the game in three words with this four-word quip: “The future of communication.”

Parents are understandably not impressed: Ellie Gibson of the Scummy Mummies Podcast characterizes Baszucki’s statement to parents as “a bit of a get out,” and the head of parenting resource website Mumsnet Justine Roberts argues that managing childrens’ use of Roblox isn’t easy even with parental controls set. “We all know that with the best will in the world life sometimes gets in the way,” she says. “If you’ve got multiple children you’re looking after and things happen, […] you probably can’t 24/7 watch everything they’re doing.”

Storm and her husband Kerr Okan welcomed their second child together – a beautiful baby girl.

Channel 5’s Jeremy Vine presenter Storm Huntley has announced the birth of her second child.

The Scots TV host and her husband, La Fontaines singer Kerr Okan, already share a son, Otis, 3, and now have revealed that they welcomed their baby girl, Sloan Blue Okan, to the world on Saturday, March 15.

Sharing snaps of their newborn, Storm posted: “And just like that…My heart has doubled in size Welcome to the world little one Sloan Blue Okan 6.3lbs Born March 15th, 02:31am.”

And many fans and friends flocked to the comments to congratulate the family on their new arrival.

One wrote: “Congratulations Storm and family. Love Sloan’s name (Ferris Bueller fan) and she has a look of big brother Otis. Pair of cuties you have there. Enjoy the baby bubble.”

Another said: “Wonderful news Storm, she is beautiful, & such a gorgeous name too.”

While one added: “She’s adorable. Well done angel and hope Otis is helping look after his little sis.”

And another said: “Oh stop!! So cute. Congratulations Storm! I hope Sloan had a good transition into the world and you’re ok. Lots of love.”

When the couple announced they were expecting their first child, son Otis in 2022, Storm, 37, posted a picture of herself and Kerr peering into an oven, where a bun could be seen being cooked.

They also posted the caption: “Something’s Cooking” with a red love heart emoji.

And when they revealed they were expecting again, they replicated the 2022 snap this time with Otis and wrote: “It’s happened again!”

Revealing her happy news on the Jeremy Vine Show, Storm said: “It’s happened again. I’m having another baby … So I am quite far along – 14 weeks. Normally you can say at 12 weeks, but I only had my scan yesterday; there it is [the scan appears on screen].

“So that is little baby number two on its way. And second babies don’t mess about. I mean, they pop real quick. I have been showing like nobody’s business to the point where eight weeks pregnant, my neighbour stopped me and said, is Otis [Storm’s son] getting a little brother and a little sister.”

Storm and Kerr got married back in 2021 in a stunning intimate ceremony in Loch Lomond and a party at Kerr’s parent’s house in Motherwell followed a few days later.

A year later, they announced they were expecting a baby boy, however, Storm faced various issues in her pregnancy from contracting Covid and also being diagnosed with gestational diabetes.

At the time, she wrote: “Diagnosed with Gestational Diabetes about three weeks ago and it’s all a bit big and scary. I know lots of you have to deal with this daily, so any advice?”

The supposed conversation makes it appear that Kim holds the copyright to North’s name and was using it to try to prevent the 11-year-old from being included in a track with Diddy – provoking a furious reaction from West.

In the grabs, West texts Kardashian: ‘I’m never speaking with you again,’ along with a snippet of what appeared to be a legal document, including the phrase: ‘participation in this project,’ presumably in reference to the new song.

Kardashian allegedly shoots back: ‘I asked u at the time if I can trademark her name,’ alleging: ‘You said yes,’ and adding: ‘When she’s 18 it goes to her.’

The grabs then show her evidently admonishing West to ‘stop,’ saying: ‘I sent paper work over so she wouldn’t be in the Diddy song To protect her’.

Kardashian, who is an aspiring lawyer, allegedly continues: ‘One person has to trademark! We agreed when they were born i would get all of our kids names and trademarks So no would else would take them.’ 

West is seen to be unmoved, purportedly retorting: ‘Amend it or I’m going to war And neither of us will recover from the public fallout,’ then darkly declaring: ‘You’re going to have to kill me.’

In the wake of the song’s release, a source exclusively informed DailyMail.com that Kardashian ‘will do whatever it takes to protect her kids from the hateful speech that Kanye continues to spur at this time.’

The insider added that Kardashian ‘has requested through a judge to not allow the kids to be around that type of behavior.’

According to insiders, North recently spent time in the studio with Kanye—their first visit in weeks—where she recorded vocals for the track, via TMZ.

Insiders say she has been working behind the scenes to keep North out of the situation.

With the song now out, that battle seems to have officially begun.

The release comes after Kanye revealed he is reviving his gospel choir, Sunday Service, but with a striking new requirement for those who make the cut.

On Thursday, the rapper took to Instagram to announce auditions for male singers in Los Angeles, inviting participants—including children as young as five—to try out for the choir he originally launched in 2019. 

However, those selected won’t just be joining the group—they’ll also need to adopt a uniform look.

According to Kanye, while a shaved head isn’t necessary for the audition, it will be mandatory for anyone who officially joins the choir.

Additionally, members of the choir will need to be ‘comfortable’ wearing shirts with swastikas on them. 

A bride-to-be was forced to cancel her wedding two months before her big day when she discovered that her mother, who had offered to plan the ceremony, had failed to organise anything at all. 

The anonymous 27-year-old woman explained her predicament in a post on Reddit‘s ‘Am I the A******?’ forum and, while many people were sympathetic to the bride, not everyone agreed it was simply her mother who was in the wrong. 

In her post, she detailed how she had intended to get married in a courthouse because, as an anxiety-sufferer, she didn’t want to overburden herself.

When her mother asked why she and her fiancé didn’t want to have a small ceremony instead, the woman responded: ‘I don’t want to because trying to plan anything makes my anxiety go into overload.’ 

It was at that point that her mother volunteered to organise the wedding, leaving the bride convinced that she would take it in her stride. 

But, after sharing ideas with her mother on Pinterest and discussing potential colour schemes over a number of months, the woman found out that her mother had made next to no progress with the wedding plans.

The only element that her mother had organised was for the bride to arrive at the ceremony on horseback. 

The bride added: ‘Fast forward, it’s two months before the wedding is supposed to happen, and my stepdad pulls me aside and says, “if you want this wedding to happen, you need to start pitching in and helping your mom.”‘

Offended by her stepfather’s remark, the young woman explained in her post that she had contributed in a number of meaningful ways. 

She wrote: ‘[I] made the guest list, picked out the colour theme, sorted the wedding party, pretty much all the important things on my end so I haven’t just been completely hands off.’

And, despite never wanting a ceremony – let alone an elaborate one – the bride had even identified a horse after her mother had suggested she ride in on one. 

As there were only two months left before the ceremony, the anxious bride chose to cancel the entire wedding rather than drive herself into a frenzy by trying to finish all the planning in a matter of weeks.

Having made the decision to call if off, she then told her guests via a Facebook group that ‘due to personal circumstances we are no longer having a wedding ceremony, but will still be having a late reception for anyone who had already made travel plans.’

To add to the drama, the bride’s mother – who saw the message and her daughter’s decision to cancel the wedding as a personal snub – told her daughter she was ‘slandering’ her, according to the bride. 

Her mother retaliated by labelling her a ‘disappointment’ in a family group chat, the bride added.

The bride finished her Reddit post: ‘I want to know if I’m justified in being upset and telling everyone we were going back to our original courthouse plan?’  

The debacle certainly caught the attention of other Reddit users, with almost 140 comments.

Many people agreed that the bride was well within her rights to be ‘upset’ with her mother and that going back to the original courthouse plan was the right thing to do.

One user commented: ‘NTA [Not the a******] it’s absolutely your mom’s fault. Go to the courthouse!’

Another was even more critical of the bride’s mother, writing: ‘NTW, legit. Your mum is the AH. I wouldn’t give her the time of day, let alone let her near my wedding plan. You have every right to be upset. Stick with the courthouse, at least you know nothing will be mucked up.’

A third person stated comfortingly: ‘NTA – you now get to make your wedding just about you and your SO [significant other].’ 

A fourth agreed: ‘NTA, and just rip the damn band-aid before this ruins the entire process of your wedding.’

And a fifth weighed in with their advice: ‘This is why when your instinct is to elope, elope. Just do it instead of telling everyone. It’s not even worth saying your engaged. If you know you’re going to elope, go straight to that.’

Yet not everyone online was so supportive, with some users suggesting both the bride and her mother were at fault for failing to communicate effectively – and others putting all the blame on the bride.  

One person said: ‘ESH [Everyone sucks here] You both dropped the ball on communication. Neither of you were clear on who was planning what.’

Another commented: ‘ESH. If you really didn’t want a wedding, you should have put your foot down and refused anything but that. If your mom really wanted to plan the wedding, she should have actual communication with you about her capabilities.’

The same Reddit user added: ‘I think she thought you’d want to be involved once you agreed to something non-courthouse, especially since you still were involved in sending ideas. Both sides need more communication.’ 

One user, however, was even more damning, writing: ‘YTA [You’re the a******]. If your communication skills are truly this poor, your marriage is not going to work well.’

Another agreed: ‘I think you are the AH. You want a courthouse wedding. You allow your Mom, who you’ve known your whole life, to talk you into what she wants versus what you want. Further, you had to expect your Mom was going to drop the ball based on her traits and your past experiences. Now your shocked? Really.

The Reddit user concluded: ‘At this point, figure out what you want, how invested your guest list is and pick the best venue or none at all.’
