My heart skipped a breath when my phone rang in the early hours of Thursday, March 6, 2025. It was an unusual call from the personal assistant to Dr Doyin Okupe, and I knew straight away that something bad must have happened to my godfather. The sad news of the passage of my God-sent benefactor was broken to me in a depressed voice by his personal assistant.
I met Omooba Doyin Okupe in February 2014, and our father and son chemistry jelled almost immediately. Instead of giving me handouts of fish, the former presidential spokesman taught me how best to fish. He opened my eyes to the lucrative side of the media business. God actually used the Iperu-born media strategist to change my story, and I will remain indebted to him, even in death.
The medical doctor turned media strategist was highly instrumental to my success in the media business.
In addition to helping my career, Omooba Okupe was also my father figure. He was also my confidant, adviser, and business strategist. I was always free to discuss any issue with him, and he was ever willing to help me in the best way possible.
Inasmuch as I still find it most difficult to address Dr Okupe as late, the memory we shared will continue to linger in the innermost recess of my consciousness. The Iperu prince was always fun to be with and was full of wisdom. He was also intellectually savvy, to the point that he knew a little about everything and many of the concerned areas.
Despite my impatient nature, my godfather was patient enough to manage my shortcomings in this regard. We talked almost every day, and our discussions were always centred on politics and other national issues. In all our discussions, I could establish that Omooba Okupe was patriotically passionate about Nigeria. I was with him in Abuja a few days before his demise, and we actually talked a day after he arrived in Lagos from Abuja.
A particular day two years ago, during one of our regular tete-a-tete, I drew his attention to the need for him to write his memoir. He agreed and went ahead to write the book with the title “Double Jeopardy: The Doyin Okupe Story”. He did write in the book that I was the person who encouraged him to work on the memoir. I found it a big honour that credit was given to me in the book when it was launched two years ago on the occasion of the 70th birthday of Dr Okupe.
Given my close relationship with Omooba Okupe, I knew when the health challenge that eventually led to his death began. No one could have ever thought that things would turn out this way. Omooba was, however, determined to wrestle with the illness, and he truly did just that with all his might, resources, and the best of medical services. My godfather fought a good fight, but he eventually submitted to the will of God. The Holy Bible admonishes Christians in the book of Thessalonians 4:13 not to mourn like unbelievers who have no hope. I am at least consoled by the admonition in Isaiah 56:1-2, which states that the righteous are taken away to be spared from the evil to come.
In all honesty, a written description of my relationship with Dr Okupe can never be well captured in this tribute for the want of space. The story will be told in detail soon, after the burial. By then, I must have shaken off the shock and would have also come to terms with the reality that my godfather had indeed completed his assignment on this side of the planet Earth.
The transition of my father figure confirmed to me that no man can actually add one hour to his appointed time on earth. Dr Okupe was only 16 days away from his 73rd birthday when he breathed his last. We were together on his 72nd birthday, but sadly, his 73rd birthday can at best be noted posthumously.
The passage of Dr Doyin Okupe has taught me a lesson that we must consciously live our lives to impact other lives. Another lesson from the death of my godfather is that we must tune the antenna of our consciousness towards leaving legacies rather than the crude acquisition of material things. Certainly, my mentor will not be buried with any of his property. Why, then, is the obsession with things that cannot speak for us when we are dead and gone?
For me, Dr Doyin Okupe is my major benefactor. My life also bears testimony to his many enduring legacies. He impacted lives and focused on things and people who are now living after him.
Inasmuch as I find it most difficult to say goodbye to my godfather, I can only wish you eternal peace in the pantheon of saints. I wish you a safe and smooth passage to your place of everlasting rest, Omooba Doyin Okupe.
FOR seven years, a mother fell deeper into the clutches of an online scam, eventually losing over $400,000 to fraudsters who first contacted her on social media.
Despite her son’s relentless efforts to intervene, he has been met with nothing but dead ends.

Initially targeting the elderly mother through messages on Facebook, the scammers operated under various aliases.
The son wrote to Quentin Fontrell at The Moneyist.
He told how, over time, scammers had manipulated her into sending money via Apple gift cards and cryptocurrency, making it nearly impossible to trace the transactions or recover the lost funds.
Despite moving in with her son for support, the woman remained loyal to the con artists.
She has continued to send them money, despite knowing the financial and emotional toll it has taken on her family.
“I have called the cops. I have called the FBI. I have called the local sheriff for internet fraud with zero help, shared the son.
“They told me there’s nothing they can do.”
“I have yelled, screamed, and cried. She does not care. I called a lawyer, and they said it would be very difficult because she is of sound mind.”
The situation has escalated to the point where the scammers have convinced the elderly woman to take out loans, further deepening her financial ruin.
She has even shared her son’s home address with them, raising concerns about safety and privacy.

Despite everything, she refuses to acknowledge the fraud and continues to send money to her online manipulators.
With no legal recourse, no law enforcement intervention, and no way to force her mother to stop, the son shared he feels trapped.
He has even considered asking her mother to leave, but with too much income for senior living assistance yet nowhere else to go, the options remain bleak.
The cry for help soon got a response.
Quentin responded, “She is a victim.”
The reply continued, “Keep telling yourself that. Tell your mom that too. Show her compassion and understanding instead of anger.”
He then went on to share, “The latter will only make her put her guard up higher.
“Somewhere, deep down, she knows none of this is real, but this is the ultimate and most devastating part of this kind of financial scam. They build a fake reality for a vulnerable person.”
Expert Tips: Crypto Scam Red Flags
Scam expert Toby Braun, the managing partner for American Special Investigative Group and Heroya Cryptocurrency Investigations spoke exclusively to The U.S. Sun about the warning signs of crypto scams.
Beware of a “Crypto trading platform, service or fund offering unusually high returns,” he said as these “are more than likely a scam.”
Individuals who still go ahead with the investment should ensure that “professional due diligence” is carried out regarding the individual or platform.
His second tip is to “refrain from responding to personal solicitations involving cryptocurrency from an unknown source.”
This can be via any social media platform, emails, text messages, or WhatsApp.
The third red flag is being approached by people who seem to be overly friendly.
“Many scammers use deepfake technology to pretend to be someone on dating sites they are not,” Braun said.
“Once the scammers connect with their unbeknown victim who is often just looking for a real connection, they flatter them before sharing how much money they are making with crypto.
“The victim is then lured into making substantial investments, and deposit funds they’ll never see again.”
Similarly, the expert warned people away from engaging with strangers or people they have just met if they are asking for money or encouraging them to invest.
Lastly, “be aware of anything that simply sounds too good to be true. It generally never is,” he added.

One in ten parents living in poverty say their children have been bullied for being poor, grim new research shows today.
The poll of 2,000 parents of school-aged children living on the lowest incomes also found they spend on average £2,000-per-year on school costs. Almost a quarter (23%) reported getting into debt to cover costs such as transport and school trips.
The Censuswide survey carried out for Parentkind found 10% of parents said their children had experienced bullying as a result of the family’s financial situation. The charity said this was equivalent to over half a million children.
The survey also found one in eight parents living in poverty had received food parcels from their children’s school. A further 8% said their children had gone to school in dirty clothes because they could not afford to wash their school uniform.
Parentkind described the results of its polling as “shocking” in showing the costs of schooling for families. They have sent their report to Education Secretary Bridget Phillipson and Work and Pensions Secretary Liz Kendall ahead of the publication of the Government’s child poverty strategy later in the spring.
It is warning a target must be set to reduce school costs for the poorest parents.
Parentkind Chief Executive, Jason Elsom said: “This polling is shocking and shows that school is not free. Parents living in poverty are spending huge amounts of what little money they have on sending their children to school. That can’t be right.
“We need the government to urgently start talking about parents in poverty alongside child poverty plans to make sure we support these parents.”
Daniel Kebede, General Secretary of the National Education Union (NEU), added: “With nine children in every class of 30 growing up in poverty, teachers and school leaders see the very real impact this has on our children and young people.
“This report highlights how many families across Britain are struggling with everyday costs – and the devastating impact this is having on the mental wellbeing of both children and their parents.”
He said the upcoming child poverty strategy – expected to be published in the spring – is a “huge opportunity for the government to act”.
A Department for Education spokeswoman said: “We are determined to tackle the scourge of child poverty and break the unfair link between background and opportunity – and have already taken wide-ranging action despite this government’s incredibly challenging fiscal inheritance.
“The first 750 schools will begin offering free breakfast clubs from April, backed by over £30 million, and we are capping the number of branded school uniform items to keep the costs down for parents. More widely we have increased pupil premium funding to over £2.9 billion for the FY 24-25, and the Child Poverty Taskforce is working to deliver an ambitious strategy to tackle challenges felt by those living in poverty.”

A young man in Uttar Pradesh’s Kanpur was accompanying his father’s body home for the funeral on a bike. But, fate had the same in store for him, and he died on the way after suffering a heart attack. Both the father and son were later buried together.
Laiq Ahmed, a resident of Kanpur, died at a private nursing home on March 20 after his health deteriorated. His son, Atiq, who was deeply devoted to his father, refused to accept the doctors’ declaration of death and rushed the body to a hospital specialising in cardiology, hoping for a different outcome.
However, the doctors reaffirmed Laiq Ahmed’s death.
As the family transported Laiq Ahmed’s body in an ambulance, Atiq followed closely on his bike. Overwhelmed by grief, Atiq suffered a sudden heart attack and collapsed on the spot.
Local residents alerted the police, and Atiq was rushed to a hospital. But he could not be saved, and the doctors confirmed his death.
The funeral for both father and son was held together, leaving the family and locals deeply moved by the loss.
Atiq, the younger of Laiq Ahmed’s two sons, had always been exceptionally close to his father, a family member recalled. He was married and had a daughter.
The bodies of both father and son were buried in the local burial ground.

The mother of Brianna Ghey, the teenager murdered by two school kids, has said under-16s should be banned from social media.
Esther Ghey made the remarks at a screening of an ITV documentary – Brianna: A Mother’s Story.
Brianna Grey was stabbed 28 times with a hunting knife after she was lured to a Cheshire park by Scarlett Jenkinson and Eddie Ratcliffe on February, 11 2023.
Her mother features in the programme which examines the murder of her 16-year-old daughter in 2023.
Ms Ghey said one of the reasons she had chosen to take part in the documentary was to “get answers” from social media companies about safety.
She said: “At this point, I really do not believe that any social media company will put lives before profit.”

On her campaigning work on online safety and trolling, Ms Ghey said she supports a ban on social media for under 16s.
“It is an absolute cesspit,” she added.
The 75-minute film celebrates Brianna’s life and features interviews with three of her friends, who describe the schoolgirl as kind, chatty and funny. It also explores her death and issues around online safety.
The documentary follows Ms Ghey as she travels to the US and meets Arturo Bejar, a former engineering director at social media giant Meta, who testified before Congress about child safety on the company’s platforms.
He tells her that people are “defenceless” against harmful algorithms.
The film also features officers from Cheshire Police, who speak about the investigation into Brianna’s murder, and videos of custody suite interviews with both killers, who were caught within 28 hours.
Ms Ghey has previously met Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer, and his predecessor Rishi Sunak, to discuss the issue, and has criticised the Online Safety Act, saying it does not go far enough.
She has campaigned for an age limit on smartphone use, stricter controls on access to social media apps, tougher action on knife crime and for mindfulness to be taught in schools.
LBC highlighted the concerns of parents and campaigners of kids’ access to online safety in a dedicated day of programming earlier this month.
Ministers have vowed to keep the Online Safety Act under review.
Meanwhile, a study from new think tank The New Britain Project and polling firm More in Common found that three-quarters of those aged 16 to 24 said stronger rules were needed to protect young people from social media harms, and social media was named as the most negative influence on teens’ mental health.
According to the research, which surveyed more than 1,600 16-to-24-year-olds, 55% said social media had gotten worse in the last five years, with 62% saying it has become less safe for young people.
Four out of five young people also said they would try to keep their own children off social media for as long as possible. In general, young women were more negative about social media than young men, and half of all young people said they regretted time spent on their phones while growing up.

Three adults, a baby and a child escaped from two cars that crashed in Breightmet this evening (March 23).
Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service confirmed they attended a crash at the junction of Bury Road and Roscow avenue at around 6.45pm.
They said the occupants of both cars, two adults and a baby and one adult and a child escaped from the vehicles.
A spokesperson for Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service (GMFRS) said: “At around 6:45pm this evening (Sunday, March23), firefighters were called to reports of a crash at the junction of Bury Road and Roscow Avenue in Bolton.
“One fire engine from Bolton North fire station quickly arrived at the scene, which involved a collision between two cars.
“The occupants of both vehicles – two adults and an infant, and one adult and a child – all self-rescued before the arrival of the fire service.
“Crews worked to make the area safe before handing over to Greater Manchester Police.
“Firefighters were at the scene for around an hour and a half.”
Greater Manchester Police have been approached for comment.
At the scene, Yavapai County Sheriff’s deputies found a man and child dead. Another child died while on the way to the hospital.
A third child and three adults are in the hospital.

“Preliminary investigations indicate that the driver, identified as Jesse Forman from Chino Valley, driving a Toyota 4-Runner carrying his 3 young children and the mother of the children, crossed over double lines and collided head-on with a Jeep SUV, carrying a woman in her 60s and her adult son. These individuals were also flown to a Flagstaff hospital with serious injuries,” the sheriff’s office said.
What’s next:
The sheriff’s office is looking into what caused this crash, and if impairment and/or speed were factors.
“Traffic enforcement on Williamson Valley Road has been a priority for YCSO after recent complaints from the public. YCSO will continue to conduct more speed and driving enforcement in the area. The Sheriff’s office makes public safety a priority and emphasizes areas in the county that are known to have problems with reckless driving,” the sheriff’s office said.
A woman in Southern Colorado was arrested after her 54 dogs allegedly mauled her dementia-stricken elderly mother to death.
Jessica Hoff, 47, has been arrested and charged with criminal negligence resulting in death and 54 counts of aggravated cruelty to animals, following the gruesome death of her mother LaVonne Hoff, 76.
Hoff allegedly left LaVonne home alone with Hoff’s dogs during the day while she ran errands.
Her mother was later found unresponsive by law enforcement on February 3.
Pueblo County Sheriff’s Office responded to a call to Hoff’s home at 5.30pm and found ‘several dogs loose inside the home along with at least a dozen more dogs in cages.’
LaVonne Hoff’s autopsy revealed her death was a result of a dog attack, sheriffs said in a press release.
Sheriffs added that LaVonne reportedly had dementia and required 24-hour care.
Detectives learned that while LaVonne Hoff was left alone, she was attacked by the dogs that were loose in the home, sheriffs said.
The investigation led to the search of the home and another property Hoff owned in Colorado City, finding a total of 54 dogs and seven birds in her possession.

Hoff is currently being held in Pueblo County Jail on a $50,000 bond and is scheduled for her initial court appearance on March 27
‘The dogs and birds were found living in unsanitary conditions and several of the dogs were in poor health,’ the release said.
The animals were seized by the Sheriff’s Office who worked with Animal Law Enforcement.
