  • How Mums Advice Saved My Life

The admin at Mums Advice don’t get enough credit, they are not mind-less robots just posting messages.

I thought I would share my story of how the admin team saved me and the members showed me hope.

So a bit of my back story 2014 I fell in love with the man of my dreams, every girls ideal man, tall, dark, handsome, hard working and popular.

It was a whirlwind relationship, I quickly moved away with him over 100 miles away from my family and friends but I didn’t mind…

    I was in Love

    I was happy

    I was in ore

    I was young

I was NOT safe although I didn’t know this just yet!!!!

He was so sweet, loving and kind unless he had a drink then he was jealous, controlling and verbally aggressive but I put this all down to the stress of his job and he wasn’t hitting me or raping me so it was ok (how stupid was I?)

Fast forward to 2015 I became pregnant and excited to meet my much wanted baby, obviously being pregnant I talked constantly about names, things I needed to buy, my feelings and talked to my bump.

My partner become jealous of OUR baby, he wouldn’t come to my scans or engage in conversations about “it”, he would shout at me and say all I cared about was “that thing”.

I should have left, I should have told my mum, I should have gone somewhere safe, but I loved this man, he was just nervous and scared to be a dad.

Ok so this is where Mums Advice comes in, August 2015 I was 6 months pregnant I was laying in the bath listening to music on my iPad late in the evening, my partner had been out with his friends down the local pub.

He came home drunk and burst into the bathroom and was raging, screaming that I was a dirty whore and that I was ruining his life.

He dragged me out of the bath by my hair, he was pounding down blow after blow on my head, chest and stomach.

I pleaded with him not to hurt our baby, I begged him to STOP, the blood was pouring from my skull, bits of my hair where in his hands, 2 of my teeth had been knocked out, it seemed there was blood everywhere, all i saw was red.

He had enough and walked out of the bathroom and sat against the door, I couldn’t get out, I couldn’t get help, I could hear him ranting to himself about how it was all my fault, how he wished I hadn’t trapped him, he was getting angry again, I knew it wouldn’t be long til he came back in and attacked me again.

My iPad yes I’ll use my iPad!!!

Do i message my mum? my sister? a friend?

But they will be asleep now and won’t see the message until it’s too late.

Mums Advice, I’ll message them, what have i got to lose, they are always there.

Within a matter of minutes they had replied, they had got my location, they had contacted the police, they had saved me!!!!

10 minutes later the police and a paramedic had arrived, He was taken away in hand cuffs and I was rushed to hospital.

I had bald spots on my scalp where he had ripped hair out, a broken jaw, teeth missing, fractured skull, numerous bruises, but I was alive and my baby was unharmed.

I cannot thank Mums Advice enough, the admins and the members who replied to my post with kind words, support and love and for rescuing me and my baby.

We now live with my mum and I have a happy healthy baby girl I urge any woman who is in a controlling or violent relationship to get out, to get help, to be brave for the sake of your children.

  • How Do I Tell My Child He’s Not Wanted

How do you explain to an 8 year old that his dad who has supposedly loved him, raised him, played with him and been his role model that he has a new family, a new baby on the way and now my son isn’t welcome.

How do you explain he won’t be there on his birthday?

His Fathers day card won’t be received

His Dad has said he doesn’t want him and never wants to hear from him again.

This is what I had to do last year the most heart breaking conversation i have ever had.

Seeing my sons heart break even though i was tactful with my words i reassured him I loved him more than life it’s self.

My son hasn’t seen his dad for over a year and you know what my boy has come through it he realises his dad is missing out not the other way round.

I do not bad mouth his father to my son, and i hope one day his dad sees sense and reconnects with our child, but for now i’m raising my son to be a kind, smart and brave man.

For all you single mums out there whose childs father is still wanting to be in their kids life, don’t bad mouth them (in ears reach of your child) don’t make impossible demands of them, I won’t tell you to be grateful just thankful that you had a relationship with a man who stands up and accepts his responsibilities.

Mums and dads who have no other parental support be proud, be strong, you stood up when your ex sat down.

  • Is it Bedtime Yet?

    Bedtime Can Be Stressful!

Every family has a different routine, all children have their own wants and needs at bedtime; another story, a trip to the toilet, a different drink, any excuse to get up somedays…

But, what time should this sometimes dreaded mission to sleep begin?

Below is a handy chart of suggested bedtimes.

Is this the right bedtime in your house?

Let us know in the comments.

  • Be more specific

“Evelyn can you give the plants a drink please?”

    5 minutes later!!!

    “MUMMMMM I need more cups”

What on Earth Evelyn why are there loads of cups on the table?

“You said give the plants a drink”

Yeah but I meant water them Hun.

“Well why didn’t you just say that silly mum”

Moral of the story more specific

  • Sepsis: Don’t wait!!!

    Sepsis.

Something that most people have heard of, but don’t understand or know what it is or what it means.

Something that’s deadly serious, but not known enough.

I’ve heard about it, know about symptoms and it still didn’t cross my mind that my daughter could have it as well as meningitis. She did.

Exactly a week after her first birthday, In the space of 3 and a half hours, my daughter went from her happy, normal self to being in a serious, critical condition in hospital, the doctors exact words were “if you had brought her in an hour later, she wouldn’t have made it”. A temperature of 41 degrees celcius, heart rate of 210 (it shouldn’t be over 130), a purple blotchy rash and freezing cold arms and legs.

My daughters body had shut down, it took them 40 minutes to find a vein for a cannula. She was on fluids for 48 hours, and in Hospital for a week. On IV antibiotics and 2 injections a day for a week. She had to have a lumbar puncture, which is where they take fluid from your spine.

No child should have to go through that. Luckily it was caught in time, but not everyone is that lucky. If even one person reads this, at least that’s something. Knowing the symptoms could save a life, and going with your instincts. If you think something’s not right, get it checked.

  • Stay at home Mum VS. Working Mum

Stay at home Mum VS. Working Mum
Having a child is kind of a big deal. It changes everything. Things that used to seem important suddenly fall off your radar. Suddenly you have this little person that you need to care for. You no longer just think about yourself, you come second, first is your child.
Inevitably for some parents, you have to make a very difficult decision:
Do you return to work or do you become a stay at home mum?
If you return to work do you go back full-time or part-time?
If you become a stay at home mum will you have enough money?
Will I be setting a good example if I don’t return to work?
Will I miss too much of my babies childhood if I do return to work?
Will people think I’m a bad mum if I return to work?
Will people think I’m lazy if I don’t?
It seems crazy doesn’t it? All this stress and worry about something which should be an easy decision. But it isn’t. It is a very difficult decision for every parent.
When I first became a parent I was 21 years old, I had 1 year off work with my daughter then I returned, back to full time work. 40 hours a week plus an extra hour a day for travelling.
When I made this choice I knew it was for the best. My husband and I were saving up to buy a house and we couldn’t do that on just one wage.
I was hard. Really hard. Actually thinking back, it might be the saddest I’ve ever been. I felt awful. Like the worst mum in the world.
I thought everyone was judging me. Calling me a bad mother.
    Of course they weren’t.
And I wasn’t. I was being the best mother I could be. I was looking to the future trying to build a better life for us.
I worked full time for nearly 4 years. Then my son was born. This time the choice was easier. I remembered how unhappy I was working so much and being away from my daughter, so I told my husband that I wasn’t going to do it again. I was done. I was quitting as soon as the baby was born…. Well that didn’t go as I planned. As it turns out I could change my contract. Instead of working 5 days a week I could work just 1! It was a big pay cut but once I got to work that 1 day a week I really enjoyed it. Having grown up conversations, drinking coffee while it was still hot. Not watching Peppa Pig for the billionth time. I guess I had the best of both worlds.
Now it’s 4 years later and I’m back to basically full time although it’s “family friendly” so some weeks I will only work 1 day and others I’ll do 6. But it works with my family, we have a good balance and with the kids both in school now I don’t feel guilty anymore for “leaving them”.
I’m not really sure what their is in my little story to take away.
I guess I just want people to see how difficult it can be for mothers and fathers to make this decision.
How what works in one household wouldn’t work in another.
That you don’t know what’s happening in the head and the heart of the person you might be judging because they made a different choice.
    Anyway.. Thank you for reading.

  • Ten Top Tips for Flying with Little Ones

Ten Top Tips for Flying with Little Ones
So you’re off on your holidays!
You must be so excited, dreaming of the beach, the pool, the cocktails!
But their is one little thing you need to get out of the way first, well actually it’s not that small. It’s a massive flying machine and can be extremely boring for all aboard, expecially when those passengers are your miniature humans off on their first holiday!
So we have put together a nice list of 10 things which will (fingers crossed) help make your life, and everyone else’s slightly easier for the duration of your flight!
    1) TAKE ADVANTAGE OF EARLY BOARDING
At some point when everyone is waiting at the terminal you will hear a wonderful announcement:
“Would passengers travelling with small children or needing extra assistance please proceed to the gate now”
It might not seem like much, but to be able to avoid most of the hussle and bussle while finding your seats on the plane can mean less stress and much happier, more comfortable children!
    2) BRING ACTIVITIES
A piece of hand luggage filled with lots of fun activities dedicated to each child will definitely help, pop in their favourite story book, magazines, stickers, colouring books with crayons, an ipad or tablet, portable DVD player or anything else you can think of that would keep your child happy and busy!
    3) SNACKS
It’s a well known fact that airplane food is gross! (Okay, not everyone agrees and some people actually enjoy it!) But chances are your child will not be interested in a watery chicken korma or veggie filled pasta bake. So sandwiches, biscuits, crisps, raisins anything you know they will actually eat and help keep them from getting too grumpy.
    4) EXPLORE
Sitting down for a prolonged period isn’t fun. And an airplane is something new with not a lot to see, but still your little ones will enjoy a nice slow walk around the plane and a chance to stretch those legs, they might even see some other children they could talk to or a nice old lady that wants to pinch their cheeks and tell you how cute they are!
    5) STOP THOSE EARS POPPING
Most adults know the trick to help popping ears is some hard boiled candy. But most children would never be allowed this, so a nice compromise is a packet of jelly sweets! You could even make a game out of it, seeing who can suck their sweet the longest!
    6) TRUNKI TO THE RESCUE
You may have seen these before, a plastic gruffalo, ladybug or dragon case your child can store all their activities in as well as sit on and be pulled along. It definitely saves their little legs and your arms from carrying them. They aren’t cheap but an investment worth looking into!
    7) BRIBERY WORKS
Good behaviour deserves to be rewarded, and everyone likes presents! So why not wrap up some small activities, toys or sweets to let your child unwrap every hour or so, telling them they will only receive their present if they earn it.
    😎 APPS, APPS, APPS!
Prepare your phone or tablet with some easy, child friendly apps your kids can peacefully play on, make sure they are apps that can be launched without WiFi and bring some headphones for them too.
    9) PILLOWS & BLANKETS
If you expect your child to sleep on the plane prepare to be disappointed, but their is nothing wrong with trying to encourage them to do so. Some airlines will automatically give your pillows and blankets but not all do, so don’t be afraid to ask for some.
    10) BE PREPARED
Expect the unexpected, and try to prepare yourself for it. Sometimes planes can be delayed once you are already aboard which can make your flight twice as long. Sometimes you aren’t allowed out of your seat for hours at a time, and although you might be okay holding your bladder, even a fully potty trained child might struggle, so pack some spare pull ups, wet wipes and a change of clothes. Chances are you won’t need them. But it’s better to have them – just incase.
    We hope this list helps.
If you can think of any great tips or tricks we have missed please add them in the comments and don’t for get to share to help other parents.
  • Suffering with fertility struggles

Suffering with fertility struggles… written by Hannah Walker
You start life assuming that if you do want kids when you’re older it will naturally happen straight away. Well that’s what I thought. I met my partner when I was 15 years old, and by 18 we pondered with the thought of starting a family, we had already moved into a home and had full time secured jobs so were financially stable. But as the months ticked by I began wondering what was wrong. My periods became non-existent so I discussed with the DR who referred me for scans. Low and behold I had severe PCOS and both my ovaries were covered in large cysts. No wonder pregnancy was a struggle.
A year passed by and my partner suddenly became very ill and was admitted to hospital for 3 weeks, it caught us both completely off guard. At first we thought it was a stomach bug but it quickly came to light my partner was seriously ill. Consultants were gathered round and began the process of explaining what was happening to him. He was diagnosed with 4 diseases (but that’s for another article!). He had to take a lot of medication daily, including injections. We sat down and spoke about our fertility struggles and we got the devastating news that due to all the medication he was on, it wouldn’t happen naturally. My first priority was my partner’s health, because we were each other’s rocks and I couldn’t bear the thought to be apart from him.
We obviously put trying on hold for a few months until my partner was beginning to feel better. During these months my partner was made redundant, and depression hit him hard. I was still holding down my job as well as struggling to pay everything with one pay cheque. Fast forward time and he rapidly went downhill and was admitted to hospital again. I had no choice but to give up my job to care for him. I began giving up with the idea that we’d ever have children, maybe it just wasn’t our chosen path in life, and I became very depressed with everything piling on top of me. Every time I saw a baby my heart ached, why couldn’t I have that too?
My best friend became pregnant unexpectedly and when she dropped the news to me my heart sank, I cried for hours. I was silently struggling with all these emotions and became angry with myself. I supported her every step of the way, and turned my jealously into love for a new arrival. Every time I picked up a little dress I fought back the tears. What’s wrong with me, why me, what did I do so wrong that I deserved this?
You let your thoughts consume you, every minute of every day, the moment before you shut your eyes to sleep, or lack of sleep, you sit there awake in the dark crying, wanting to scream, but no one hears you, no one really hears you.
Some days you think you’ve got this, you think this will be MY month. Your boobs ache, you’re tired…you take yet another pregnancy test, your heart thumping through your chest, scared to look at the results, imagining what that feeling of a positive sign would feel like. But yet again you’re deflated, another negative. You buy bulk ovulation tests, every day hoping for a darker line, and maybe you do get a dark line. Excitement takes over, maybe it will happen. But yet again you’re let down when your period shows its face. Your period becomes your worst enemy, or in my case lack of periods became my enemy, how was I supposed to ovulate without a period.
There are only so many times you can go back and forth with these emotions, and eventually you hold your hands up in defeat. So what if it doesn’t happen naturally you tell yourself, there’s plenty other alternatives. Maybe medication, maybe IVF…surely they’ll solve my issue.
I booked in for a consolation with a consultant to discuss the next step. The weeks leading up to the appointment I became excited, hopeful.
The one thing that kept me pushing was that I became so desperate for my partner to have a child; all I wanted was a child, our child.
By this point I was 21 and had just celebrated my 21st, I let my hair down and went out with friends to get drunk, forget my problems for just a few hours. But when you’re so consumed with wanting a child, it never leaves your mind. It had the complete opposite affect and instead of enjoying my night out I sat outside on the pavement bawling my eyes out.
Christmas passed and I decided on New Year’s Eve I would enjoy it with close friends. I vowed to myself to not beat myself up in the New Year, take life as it comes whatever route it leads too.
January began and a few weeks into it I woke up screaming in pain…what was wrong with me. Pregnancy was the last thing on my mind; I hadn’t had a period for 6 months. I couldn’t breathe, I couldn’t move, the pain was unbearable. I was driven to the DRs who immediately done a pregnancy test which came back negative…at first. I was given high pain medication and told it was appendicitis. On the way home I couldn’t cope with the pain, what was wrong with me?

Half way home I received a phone call, the phone call that changed my life. “The results have changed…you need to come back straight away”. My heart began thumping so hard I could hear it so clearly, my breathing erratic. Surely I wasn’t…pregnant. Even if I was this pain was an alarm bell ringing. I entered the DRs Office and there it sat. The pregnancy test she had removed from the bin.
    A strong positive.
I cried instantly and she cradled me in her arms, she knew what this meant to me. She immediately began discussing that this was probably an ectopic pregnancy and she arranged a team at my hospital to take me once I arrived. I left, my head was spinning. I didn’t come all this way to lose a baby, please don’t add more heartache on to what I already feel.
I paced up and down the hospital ward, watching other expectant mothers watching me with a strange look. I was in agonising pain and I couldn’t hide it. I was scanned and there no was sign of a baby…I knew it. In fact there was no sign at all of anything wrong with me. Blood tests were performed and I was put onto a bed with an IV drip. A consultant came in with his team and said we can’t wait for blood test results we need to operate now. I starting shaking, crying, I didn’t know what was happening it was all so fast.
I woke 5 hours later, exhausted. Before I drifted into a sleep the consultant said ‘you nearly died, we saved you’ and I fell into a deep sleep.
The next morning when I awoke the consultant was already sat at my bed. He looked at me and I knew something was bad. He said “Your fallopian tube was wrapped around your right ovary, it was killing it off. If it wasn’t for that positive pregnancy test we wouldn’t have operated so quickly, you’re extremely lucky to be here”. I blurted out “And the pregnancy test?” He responded “we still don’t know, it could still be an ectopic pregnancy, we need to keep an eye on you.”
I eventually went home, I struggled I had infection after infection; I visited the hospital every 48 hours for more blood tests and scans. What was the point in it all? After such invasive surgery no baby would survive it, they even told me that, they told me there was next to no chance now. So why did I still have this glimmer of hope.
And then mid-January I got the call. The most important call of my life. My HCG levels had risen so much that a scan would reveal everything.
The same day me and my partner went to the scan, my mind was all over the place.
At first…nothing…nothing was on the screen. My glimmer of hope had been shot down.
The screen was turned, and there my baby was, there my baby I so desperately wanted for years appeared on the screen. From that moment on I would do everything in my power to protect it.

Pregnancy wasn’t easy on me, but I didn’t mind, every moment would lead to the safe arrival and I was so blessed I was able to become pregnant. On the 8th October 2016 I welcomed to the world my son, Joseph.

I don’t know what the future holds now, whether id ever be able to have more children, but I am so overly blessed for the son I have and my partner that if more children aren’t on the cards for me that’s absolutely fine because if we decide we do want another child, adoption is something I would love to do.

The point of this post is we all deal with struggles; some more than others, but as long as you remain positive and keep fighting your future will lead you to your destination. Your happily ever after.

Fertility struggles are real, there are millions of us silently, or openly suffering. Whether it’s been a year or ten years of trying to conceive, the pain never gets any easier, but I’m here to tell you there is light at the end of this tunnel. Whether it happens naturally, IVF, medication, adoption, surrogacy or any other way if your heart and soul is set on a family it CAN happen.

Don’t suffer in silence, support each other whatever road you lead down.
