  • Let’s Talk About The Struggles To Conceive

So often we talk about the positive pregnancy test or how easy it was for someone to become pregnant.

Very rarely do we talk about the struggle some women face while trying to conceive.

We don’t talk about the struggle that comes along with seeing pregnancy announcements. And how hard it is to not let the jealousy or the anger at your body creep in.

Or how happy you are for them, all while it takes an emotional toll on you.

We don’t talk about how two days prior you were staring at a negative pregnancy test. Or the tears you cried on the bathroom floor that day, because yet once again it’s not your month.

Even after months or years of praying and trying.

You don’t admit that sometimes you check those pregnancy tests thirty minutes later. Sometimes even digging them out of the trashcan the next day.

All in hopes that this one time it took a little while longer to register positive. Because the logic in that makes so much sense that you feel ridiculous afterward.

Or how you start calculating when the baby would be due before taking a pregnancy test. And how you think of all the cute ways let your family know.

How you have a cute Halloween announcement planned, but then your period shows up. But that’s okay, Thanksgiving and Christmas are right around the corner and you have ideas for that too.

Only, Christmas passes and there’s still no pregnancy.

Or the weight gain that happens even though you’re trying to lose weight. Because doctors tell you that you’ll have to lose a certain amount of weight to get pregnant.

We don’t talk about the inner turmoil that arises when you’re asked when a baby is coming. And oh boy do people love to ask that question without thinking about the consequences it will have.

Or, how it makes you want to scream if you hear, “Relax and stop trying so hard! Making a baby is the fun part!” one more time.

As if you’re not trying hard enough to relax and keep the process of making a baby fun and not a job.

And why is it always the women who don’t have children (nor do they want a child anytime soon) think that giving advice is wise?

Much less do we talk about the emotions that come up when you receive unsolicited advice. From both women with and without children.

Or how inadequate it makes you feel about your inability to conceive. And how it makes you wonder what you are doing wrong if it’s so easy for everyone else.

Because it has to be you if it’s so easy for everyone else.

We don’t talk about the friendships lost or changed. Either because they can’t understand your struggle or don’t care to.

Or how isolated and alone that makes you feel.

We don’t talk about the dread of going to family events because you don’t want to face the question of “When are you having a baby?”. No matter how many times you request that the question not come up.

The question will come up and it will continue to.

And because of that, tears will continue to happen quietly in a bathroom of that family event. Because who wants to be the center of attention as they cry in front of everyone?

    Certainly not you.

We don’t talk about the heart-wrenching losses that happen behind closed doors. Or how it’s easier to stay quiet than have to relive that heartache with anyone other than your partner.

Hell, it’s easier to stay quiet about all your struggles with anyone else but your partner. Because you don’t want to risk that unsolicited advice. Nor do you want to run the risk that someone will make light of your pain and struggle.

There are no cultural norms surrounding infertility. Because of that, it seems like you’re left to navigate this journey alone.

    Except you’re not alone.

I see you. I empathize with you. I am you.

  • For Every Woman Who Cries Alone In The Shower

For the woman whose husband makes an “extra stop” after work every evening.

For the woman who is mourning the loss of a pregnancy that nobody else knew about.

For the woman who still leads from the front even although she’s lost inside.

For the woman who was fired for her fourth late because she has been awake for a straight week with a sick child.

For the single mom who doesn’t know how the utilities are going to stay on this month.

For the woman who has gone through 2 IVF’s and has tried for five years without success but still shows up to every baby shower for her friends.

For the woman who still hasn’t forgiven herself for the abortion that she had 20 years ago.

For the woman who has a line of judging eyes at her and her children as she counts out coins or has to put something back at the supermarket.

For the woman that opens the door to the news of her husband being killed overseas three weeks before he was to return home.

For the woman that lives with a quiet anxiety because nobody understands what you could possibly be stressed about.

For the woman that gives to her family all day- everyday and just needs a break.

For the woman that smiles at strangers all day in public- but weeps silently every night.

For the woman who has wanted to end it all but found strength to carry on.

For the woman that heard the rumour about herself at church today.

For the woman sleeping next to a stranger every night.

For the woman whose genetics will never allow her to look like the ones in the magazines.

For the woman that endures one broken relationship after another because there was no father around to teach her what love looks like.

For the woman raising a fatherless daughter and praying that history doesn’t repeat itself.

For the woman who loves with all her heart who’s desperate to be loved.

For every single woman that cries in the shower so that nobody else can see. Because if you aren’t strong-nobody is.

Just because the water washes your tears doesn’t mean that you don’t cry. Just because you cry doesn’t mean that you’re not strong enough to handle it.

I am you. I see you. I am with you, I cry with you. I love you. 💜

  • We Were Given The Gift Of Human Kindness

Tonight we were supposed to have ridden the Polar Express. Sadly our son had other plans. You see he is autistic. He was so excited that he became overwhelmed and had an atomic size meltdown. He beat me and his dad up pretty badly. A wonderful woman helped us by holding our stuff while we tried to keep Ty from smashing his head on the bricks. The staff of the Grand Canyon Railway tried so hard to help. They even held the train. Finally, I had to say let’s go back to the room. I cried all the way back. My heart was shattered. I wanted this so badly for my son. He loves trains and he loves the Polar Express. This was a dream come true. But it didn’t happen.

We got to our room and I went into the bathroom and silently cried. My heart ached. Then there was a knock on the door calling out “maintenance!”. My husband answered the door and slipped outside. He came in and said, ” They said they would like to do something “. I stepped out and there was one of the gentlemen that tried to help us and a police officer. They said that they felt horrible about what happened and wanted to know if they could do something special for our family. I started crying again and asked if I could hug them. The poor policeman looked terrified but I didn’t care I hugged anyway sobbing thank you over and over again. I ran into the room and tried to get our son up but he refused so my husband said he would go tell them.

While they were gone I curled up next to my son and read him his favorite book The Polar Express. I had just finished when my husband came back in and he said that there was someone special that wanted to visit. Ty and I shook our head yes and in walks the train conductor. He sat next to Ty’s bed and chatted with him. Ty was star struck. He was so excited and happy. Then the conductor gave Ty his pocket watch!

After the conductor left my husband told me that the hotel and railway offered to reschedule our visit special accommodations! They said that they want everyone to experience something special and magical.

They succeeded. We may not have gotten to ride a train but we got something even more magical…..We got the gift of human kindness!

We Were Given The Gift Of Human Kindness

  • There’s No Trophy For Labour

    “There’s no trophy Ashley”

The best 4 words my husband could have said to me in that delivery room. It put my whole world as a Mom into perspective. I was in agony and trying to decide whether or not to get an epidural. I had no idea I was already at the very end of my labor and would be pushing Leo out within minutes. All I knew was that I was in pain and couldn’t imagine laboring like that for what I thought would be a few more hours.

I was trying to talk to him between contractions on the verge of tears and he lovingly spoke lots of support and some truth into my universe with, “There’s no trophy Ashley.”

Then when I was fretting about supplementing with some formula those first few days and not wanting to feel like I was already failing at breastfeeding I heard those words again, “There’s no trophy Ashley.”

There it hit me. As moms in today’s world it can feel like we’re all competing for a trophy that doesn’t exist. I literally thought in that delivery room that I would somehow be “less than” as mother for tapping out and asking for the drugs. Like there would be a gold medal or AT LEAST a gold sticker on my medical chart for having a natural birth. And I felt like I was letting some invisible committee down when we bought formula to help him pass the amniotic fluid he had swallowed.

Since having this third sweet boy six weeks ago I’ve given lots more thought to the invisible trophies we create as moms. Some society creates for us. Standards we try so hard to measure up to even though the contest is make believe and we were made to live in community, not competition.

🏆There’s no trophy for delivering naturally vs. opting for an epidural or having a C-section.

🏆There’s no trophy for breastfeeding vs. bottle feeding.

🏆There’s no trophy for losing the baby weight the fastest.

🏆There’s no trophy for cutest delivery gown (FOR THE LOVE, it’s okay to look like you just had a baby!!!).

🏆There’s no trophy for most creative birthday party theme.

🏆There’s no trophy for how many activities you sign your kids up for.

[This list could go on forever]

My husband has no idea how meaningful those words have been allowing me to relax into having a newborn again. And I wanted to invite you to relax into motherhood with me.

🤱Because the only trophy you’ll carry through life is the bond you create with your baby. And like I’ve said before, we all go home from the hospital with a big basket of mesh undies and sanitary pads the size of our newborns no matter how glamorous our Insta pics look.

  • My Son Doesn’t Want Anything For Christmas Because He Has Too Much

So this morning we got onto the conversation of what the boys want for Christmas. Harley, after watching a shoe box video of children opening presents on Facebook the other day said he changed his mind and didn’t want anything because he’s got too much.

I asked him what he thought children in poor countries had for Christmas and said he didn’t think they had much. We watched a documentary on YouTube of children opening shoe boxes and how some people in villages live their day to day lives.

We watched unicef videos in Cambodia of children going to school that had just been built, we watched videos of children in Africa and compared it to how we live here. We watched, we both cried, me because of the understanding dawning on him of how lucky he and Koby are, was so touching to see him have so much compassion for these people, I was glad for his tears because I explained to him it means he cares and it shows love. and then Harley decided he wanted to go upstairs and find all his old toys because he wanted to send them to the children who don’t have anything. This is what he pulled together with Koby’s help. So will be on it’s way to The Gambia where my Aunty Carol lives so she can give them out to those who would like them and those most in need. ❤️❤️❤️

  • YES I Use A Backpack Leash With My Daughter

Yes! I use a backpack “leash” with my daughter… why? Well why not 🤔

She’s NOT wearing a backpack “leash” because she’s an animal 🙄. She’s not out of control. It’s not because she doesn’t listen. It’s not because I’m lazy.

    🗣She’s ONE!

She is learning. She’s learning freedom & independence but also safety & boundaries.

She’s curious. She wants to explore. She doesn’t want to be stuck sitting in a stroller, she wants to walk & burn energy.

Because human trafficking is REAL! Child predators are lurking, waiting for you to be distracted to snatch your child. They are looking for targets.

I’m not naive. Danger is out there in almost every situation. It could be crossing a parking lot. I have multiple kids, distractions happen.

    A parent could have a toddler who’s a runner.

I feel better knowing that she is still attached to me but with a little mobility and not running off.

I often hear “oh but I would never…” well good for you 👏

    So to sum it up…

MIND YOUR OWN PARENTING & do you 👌

  • Daddy How Much Money Do You Make An Hour?

SON: “Daddy, may I ask you a question?”

DAD: “Yeah sure, what is it?”

SON: “Daddy, how much do you make an hour?”

DAD: “That’s none of your business. Why do you ask such a thing?”

SON: “I just want to know. Please tell me, how much do you make an hour?”

DAD: “If you must know, I make $100 an hour.”

SON: “Oh! (With his head down).

SON: “Daddy, may I please borrow $50?”

    The father was furious.

DAD: “If the only reason you asked that is so you can borrow some money to buy a silly toy or some other nonsense, then you march yourself straight to your room and go to bed. Think about why you are being so selfish. I work hard everyday for such this childish behavior.”

The little boy quietly went to his room and shut the door.

The man sat down and started to get even angrier about the little boy’s questions. How dare he ask such questions only to get some money?

After about an hour or so, the man had calmed down, and started to think:

Maybe there was something he really needed to buy with that $ 50 and he really didn’t ask for money very often. The man went to the door of the little boy’s room and opened the door.

    DAD: “Are you asleep, son?”

    SON: “No daddy, I’m awake”.

DAD: “I’ve been thinking, maybe I was too hard on you earlier. It’s been a long day and I took out my aggravation on you. Here’s the $50 you asked for.”

The little boy sat straight up, smiling.

    SON: “Oh, thank you daddy!”

Then, reaching under his pillow he pulled out some crumpled up bills. The man saw that the boy already had money, started to get angry again. The little boy slowly counted out his money, and then looked up at his father.

DAD: “Why do you want more money if you already have some?”

SON: “Because I didn’t have enough, but now I do.

“Daddy, I have $100 now. Can I buy an hour of your time? Please come home early tomorrow. I would like to have dinner with you.”

The father was crushed. He put his arms around his little son, and he begged for his forgiveness. It’s just a short reminder to all of you working so hard in life.

We should not let time slip through our fingers without having spent some time with those who really matter to us, those close to our hearts.

Do remember to share that $100 worth of your time with someone you love?

If we die tomorrow, the company that we are working for could easily replace us in a matter of days.

But the family and friends we leave behind will feel the loss for the rest of their lives. And come to think of it, we pour ourselves more into work than to our family.

    Some things are more important.

  • Here’s Why Stay At Home Mums Can Be Depressed

I hear so many people asking why any stay at home mom would be depressed. I mean, we get to stay home with our children, why would we be depressed??

We are depressed because it’s absolutely exhausting working your ass off for your family, but it not meaning anything because we don’t make money.

It’s exhausting making a daily sacrifice to put others needs before your own. And it not meaning anything because you don’t “help” financially.

It’s exhausting being a maid, a teacher, a chef, a nurse, a mentor, and people don’t care because you don’t make money.

Our very existence doesn’t count as a real contribution to some, because we don’t earn money.

So, how would you feel. If you worked 24/7….Literally. And got zero acknowledgement from society because you don’t earn an income?! And you were constantly asked when you’re gonna get a job and what you do all day.

Someone’s worth should not be defined by the amount of money they make. My contribution is just as important as any working person. And guess what?! At the end of your work day, you get to clock out, go home and relax. I never get to clock out of my “job”. I wouldn’t change my job for the world

  • This Sock May Have Saved My Babies Life

For the people who know that we use an “Owlet Sock Monitor” on our daughter: read this story. For those who don’t know we use it: read this story. For those who have no clue what an Owlet is, but possibly know anyone who’s having a baby or thinking about someday having a baby: read this story.

To put this briefly, baby girl’s sock monitor may have saved her life last night.

The Owlet is a pulse-ox monitor that is worn as a sock when she’s sleeping. It will alert when it’s not placed right on her foot and cannot get a good reading. It will alert when there’s poor connection because of internet, or what have you. And it also does a SCARY alert when an oxygen or heart rate level drops too low.

We initially wanted this item just for a peace of mind— nothing was wrong with her health. It was expensive, so we hesitated (and I get the vibe that any new or expecting mommas that ask me about it feel this same way). I thought, “Is this thing really worth it?” UMMMMM HARD YES. It alarmed us with that scary noise at about 3am last night. My husband got to her first and basically ripped her out of that crib because we were both terrified. She had rolled over in her sleep and was on her belly, face down. But she is OK.

However, the further we looked into the graphs that the app shows of her breathing pattern through the night, it had gradually started dropping from about 215am on. And at the same time, she was in a deep sleep. So she had no clue she needed to turn her face. Was this a progression into SIDS? We don’t know. But what I do know is I’m thankful for that Owlet so I didn’t have to find out the answer to that! Owlet
