  • He Was Taken From My Arms Screaming And Crying

The last time I held my 20 month old son, and saw his eyes open was at 9pm on 3/3 as he was taken from my arms screaming and crying as he was rushed back to surgery to remove what we thought was a nickel stuck in his throat. It has felt like a lifetime going without his hugs, kisses and hearing his sweet voice. I never imagined how important those little lips and arms meant to me until they were taken away from me.

I have contemplated sharing his story because I felt only the immediate family needed to know the critical situation my son is in. But as I keep talking to nurses and replaying the night it all happened I feel it’s only right to share with all my friends and family and their families and friends so that this can never happen to anyone’s young child ever again.

It started as a normal night. My husband was outside grilling burgers while I was cooking food in preparation for the burgers. In a split second our night changed as our son knocked on the glass door proudly showing his daddy what he had in his mouth. My husband jumped up immediately opening the door but just as fast as my husband acted so did my son. My son ran away swallowing what appeared to be a nickel. My husband yells for me saying he swallowed a coin. Being a nurse, I quickly assess my son for signs of choking. He was breathing and still pink. He didn’t seem to be struggling. He was crying, screaming “quarter, momma!” (He calls all coins quarter). He then begins to gag and vomit intermittently telling me it has not passed through his throat.

We rush him to the ER where they take an x-ray showing the coin in the middle of his throat. Docs were reassuring about the coin. All we needed was for it to be taken out and we’d be able to go home that night. No big deal.
Afterwards, we were sent to Children’s hospital where they take another X-ray to make sure the coin had not traveled further.
This time the surgeons come back with a different demeanor. They asked if there was any chance our son had access to a button battery? My husband and I look at each other and immediately said no, absolutely not. No way.
And immediately it hit me. My food scale. We were weighing our food as we cooked and somehow my son got ahold of it and was banging it on the kitchen floor. I remember my mother-in-law yelling at him and removing it from him. But we didn’t think to look for the battery from the back. Maybe others would’ve but it didn’t even cross our minds to look for a battery we so rarely see.

So reality began to sink in because this is possibly the worst thing he could’ve swallowed.

He Was Taken From My Arms Screaming And Crying
He Was Taken From My Arms Screaming And Crying

My son was rushed to the OR and prepped for surgery at 9pm. The surgery was supposed to take 15-30 min but after an hour we finally got a call from the nurse saying the surgeon is having trouble removing the battery so they have called in the ENT surgeons for assistance. An hour later we received another call saying the battery was removed and he was moved up to the PICU.

The Surgeons were reassuring, the battery was removed after 5 hours of ingestion so minimal damage occurred but we wouldn’t know the extent of damage until the MRI 24 hours later.

My son is currently in the PICU intubated, on pain meds, antibiotics and sedation. We received the MRI results last night which were not as bad as it could’ve been but still bad. We were told he is on the better end of the “horrible scale”
The positive end of the battery apparently created a charge with the negative charge in the blood of the vessel behind his esophagus. This created a magnet between the battery and blood. The battery began to erode my sons esophagus tissue, leaving him a hole in his throat. The magnet effect is why the surgeons had such trouble removing it which ultimately led to prolonged exposure and worsening the breakdown of his esophagus. He also has an infection in his chest due to fluids from his mouth and tummy leaking into his chest through his hole, introducing bacteria in a place they should not be.
We do not know when my son will be extubated. He was supposed to be extubated last night but 24 hours later he is still intubated.
My sons life has changed so much because of this tiny battery. He will no longer be able to eat or drink through his mouth until this hole heals. My son still breast feeds, he is no where near being ready to stop (his choice, not mine 😁) but because of this injury the decision was made for him and it breaks my heart. He is on antibiotics to cure the current infection he has but will continue to be on antibiotics until his hole closes. We will be under constant monitoring while in the hospital but as well outpatient because our journey doesn’t end once we leave the hospital. We will have continuous ENT follow up appointments to ensure that his scare tissue continues to grow and doesn’t end up causing a stricture which would ultimately narrow his esophagus causing him to choke and gag when consuming things. This would mean another surgery to loosen up the tissue. As well, I’m sure there is much more we are not aware of.

I’m sharing my son’s story because these tiny batteries are in our everyday household items as well as the toys the kids play with. Most of us wouldn’t think any harm could come from a tiny thing like a button battery but our world couldn’t be rocked more because of the tiny thing. All the surgeons, doctors and nurses say this is not new to them. Children consuming these tiny batteries happens on a daily basis.
I never knew anything could happen quite like this…. not until it actually happened.

Please share this story with all your friends and family so our precious little children don’t have to go through what not only my son is currently going through but many other children as well.

  • Gripe Water Serious Danger

    Please read!!!
So last night I had the biggest scare of my life! After feeding Atlas-Odin I gave him gripe water which on the label states suitable from 4 weeks old.

He then began choking and went blue then purple and then floppy and non responsive for 10 whole minutes before the ambulance arrived. All my 1st aid training was taken over with the panic after a few mins of back slaps over the knee doing nothing to help. I was literally screaming in the street and banging on doors for help, thankfully I have amazing neighbours who helped me to save his life when i was convinced he had already died.

We spent 6 hours in the hospital and I was luckily enough to take him back home last night not that I slept from sitting watching him sleep to make sure he was breathing.
Anyway in the hospital the Dr who was treating him said that although gripe water says on the bottle suitable from 4 weeks he would never recommend it to be used on a baby less than 3 months old and it’s not uncommon for babies to choke on it.

Nowhere is this written on the product and it nearly cost my son his life so please share this information with any new mums you may know, I wouldn’t wish anybody to experience what we went through with Atlas-Odin yesterday those images of him in that state will haunt me forever!

Edit: A few people have questioned how he managed to choke on gripe water and the explanation given at the hospital was that it would have been due to the taste. It doesn’t have a nice fruity flavour like infacol and other children’s medicines infact it has a harsh taste that on the bottle it states most babies dont like. The taste hitting the back of their throat can cause the choking response.

Edit: some people seem to be assuming that it was how the gripe water was administered that caused Atlas-Odin to choke. Doctors confirmed this was not the case I used a 1ml syringe giving no more than 0.1ml at a time it is due to taste. If ur baby likes the taste they obviously havent choked but that doesn’t dismiss that many others do so if anyone would like to promote gripe water please write your own post rather than doing so on mine as my child nearly died!

  • The Serious Danger Of Hot Tubs

2 years ago, we purchased a hot tub. Amelia loved it, spent so much time in it for the first few weeks, as did we all. My mum was also very vigilant when cleaning it. At some point in April/May she developed an ear infection, she was floored with this. Couldn’t lift her head for days! But no big deal right? People get them all the time. The doctor prescribed her a course of Amoxicillin, which she completed as advised. About a week later her symptoms had subsided and she seemed her happy wee self again. She had however lost a lot of weight, and was complaining of dizziness now and again.

On the 11th of May I had an exam and then flew out to Marbella for my friends hen weekend the same day. Amelia stayed with my mum and dad. When I returned, her lethargy seemed to have returned and she was complaining of headaches and double vision. I honestly thought at this time that she was only saying these things as she didn’t want to leave my side and stay with her grans/dad so I could work etc. (She was going through a stage of telling fibs), as she seemed fine most other times and it only seemed to be when I wasn’t with her that she would complain of these symptoms.

The Serious Danger Of Hot Tubs
The Serious Danger Of Hot Tubs

Anyway, I took her to the doctor to be safe, where Amelia told them that she was only kidding and could see fine/didn’t have headaches anymore. (Here’s me sitting mortified thinking wee shite has just been at it!) She would go days without mentioning a thing. I was so wrong and still have guilt over this to this day. Then maybe a week or two later, she woke up with an upward turn in her left eye.

I called the opticians to make an appointment. I thought it could be related to her genetics, as problems with eyesight are common in her dads family and I wasn’t worried. When I explained what her eye looked like, and the fact the turn had appeared suddenly, along with the intermittent symptoms she had been complaining of, they wanted to see us within the hour. This is when my mind started to wander but I was still thinking she would just need an eyepatch and glasses. The dizziness could be related to this right?

We were in Specsavers for hours, while they tried to get to the bottom of the problem. They didn’t say much to us at the time, probably not to worry us. At the end of the visit they referred us to Hairmyers ophthalmology department for more tests as they were concerned but didn’t tell us what they were concerned about. So after more hours of tests at the hospital, watching various doctors/physicians enter the room and seeing worried facial expressions and body language.

I started to realise this was more serious than I first thought. My mum and dad were with me, and the doctor asked if they could mind Amelia while we had a chat privately about her concerns. I remember feeling sick and sweaty. So many things running through my head. Then she said it.

“Amelia has something growing on her brain. We’re not sure what this is yet, but it’s very serious and she needs a CT scan right away”, The world paused. My eyes filled and my vision blurred. I could tell the doctor was really worried. Which just intensified my anxiety more. She was only 5 years old.

We were then referred to Wishaw general hospital that same day for a CT Scan. We had to go immediately and were told to expect an overnight stay. I called Amelias dad in hysterics and he met me at Wishaw. We were in a trance the full journey, so much running through our minds.

She spent the night being observed in Wishaw and the CT scan results came the following day and confirmed her diagnosis. She had not one, but THREE puss filled abscesses on her cerebellum which were putting pressure on her optic nerve, hense the squint/dizziness/double vision etc. Caused by a bacterial infection which probably entered her brain through the ear (remember her ear infection a few weeks previous which we thought had cleared up?) She needed immediate treatment, but Wishaw was not equipped for this kind of condition.

We were told it was very rare and she needed specialist paediatric neurosurgeons to take over her case. We were even asked if student doctors/specialists could meet her and look over her notes as things like this don’t happen often so would be very beneficial for them to see.

That night, we were transferred for the 4th time in two days, by ambulance to the Royal Hospital for Sick Children in Glasgow. On arrival, they sat her dad and me down, and explained that her condition was life threatening and that she must start IV antibiotics straight away. I thought she would be kept in for a week or two. I was wrong. The neurosurgeon explained she would be in for at least 8 weeks, with weekly MRI scans to monitor her progress.

We were told she more than likely caught a severe ear infection from the hot tub as the warm temperatures are breeding grounds for bacteria. When we thought it had cleared, the amoxicillin had just masked her symptoms for a few weeks as it wasn’t strong enough to kill this strain of bacteria. In the mean time the infection spread to her brain, probably over the course of 4-6 weeks, unnoticed until the pressure on her optic nerve showed visual signs.

We spent the next 8 weeks living on the neurology ward with the most amazing staff and volunteers. When you ask Amelia about her time at the hospital, she has nothing but happy memories and asks if she can go back. She doesn’t even mention the scary times. For this I’m so grateful ❤️

I just wanted to share this as it was the most frightening time of my life. Please, please be extra careful when treating your hot tubs/pools and make sure you do this as regularly as possible. Also make sure to be vigilant when it comes to ear infections, they can be serious too! I was lucky that the IV antibiotics she received over those few months were enough to combat this infection and that she narrowly avoided brain surgery. She fought it off at 5 years old and is fighting fit today ❤️ My wee warrior. Even though hot tubs now scare me and they’re banned from my house lol.

I hope by sharing our story it may raise enough awareness to save someone else’s life. If we hadn’t gone to the opticians that day we could’ve been in a totally different situation. I had no idea hot tubs could expose you to such harmful bacteria and I’m sure a lot of people are unaware of this.

Ps. Can I just express my gratitude to all of these institutions which helped my girl. They saved her life and in turn saved mine. I will be forever grateful to our NHS 💙 It was this experience that encouraged me to become a Biomedical Scientist and one day be part of this amazing service.

  • Yogurt Bites Can Be Deadly

We had a big scare at our house yesterday. After Aliyah’s nap I put her in her high chair for her snack. I gave her a yogurt bite and turned to clean some bottles in the sink.

Checked on her. The first yogurt bite was gone so I gave her another. Turned my back to put away some dishes and when I turned back around (maybe 30 seconds later) her face was beet red and she was gagging. I screamed for brian while taking her out of the high chair.

As he called 911 I turned her face down and began smacking her back. It seemed like forever before she began expelling the lodged yogurt bites. What came out was globs of sticky and gooey yogurt bites with a consistency and feel just like elmers glue. (See picture)

Thank goodness for the quick response of the Fire Dept, Ambulance and police. (Yes, all three showed up) They were all wonderful and reassured us that we did everything right, but I had a melt down in the ambulance. The EMT said that yogurt bites are not a safe snack as they don’t really melt away as advertised. Instead they turn to goo.

The problem is that small children are not capable of clearing their throat, so when the goo gets caught, they can’t swallow it or expel it on their own and when they try to breath the slime goes into the airway.
Please let this be a warning to all parents and grandparents. I’m not saying that yogurt bites should be taken off the market. I’m just putting this out there so everyone is aware. It will be a long time before we try them again. 😬
***Yogurt bites are recommended for crawlers. Aliyah is a crawler. I do believe that recommendation should be changed to walker. AND LET THIS BE A HARD LESSON….DO NOT TURN YOUR BACK ON A CHILD WHO IS EATING ANYTHING!! I’ve learned my lesson. 😥

  • The Effects Of County Line Drug Dealers

WARNING PICS AREN’T PLEASANT TO LOOK AT!!!!
I can’t say too much but I need to warn people of the effects of these county lines drug dealers and how they behave towards you if you don’t do as they say!!! Please please keep your children safe!

If they all of a sudden start getting new designer items or disappear for days and seem to have money, new trainers or even start to behave differently please talk to them without judging and let them know they can come to you with anything.

Please for the people who aren’t grossed out by the pics please show them to your kids and show these people don’t care! Right now 3 of these people are on remand looking at life sentences yet they’re only kids themselves 20, 18 and 17.

I feel for their mothers but no mother should have to be put through being told your child is in a bad way mikes away from home. I wasn’t going to put anything on here however after speaking to a friend last night she made me think that us mums need to know what’s going on out there on the streets. If you see anything dodgy trust your instincts!! I apologise for the pics again but I’m hoping they’ll save someone someday 🙏🙏🙏.

Hold your kids close, I nearly lost mine 😢 but thank god I didn’t! He’ll be scarred for life and his left hand will never get back to normal. For my friends in my local area these boys are hunting the villages for kids to sell for them! I know we can’t watch them 24/7 but try and make them understand what’s going on around them

  • Please Research And Trust Your Gut About Vaccines

My wife and I had started noticing a lot of infants and toddlers passing away and people saying they were from vaccines. We were worried. Didn’t think it would happen to us.

We sat in the parking lot before our appointment. Discussed both our opinions on the matter. Neither of us wanted to do it. But I decided on doing it anyways because I didn’t know I could refuse. I sat in the car with my older two kids. My wife went into the appointment with our Izabella and after about an hour she came out. She wasn’t the same.

Not like my other two when they had their shots. A few days went by and she was absolutely inconsolable. Day in and day out. My wife, Izzy and I were sleep deprived. She was always crying and not her normal self. Overly hungry all the time and my wife couldn’t keep up with breast feeding. One night all 5 of us had went to bed.

My wife, Izzy and I finally got to bed at about 2-4am. I honestly don’t remember the time anymore. I just remember waking up just before 8 am and I had went to move Izabella from the position she was in and I noticed her eyes and lips were purple and skin was overly pale. Her body limp. I screamed for my wife to wake up when the realization hit.

We called 911 and started the resuscitation procedures. To no avail. The ambulance arrived and they continued to do cpr on the way to the hospital over an hour away. We rushed to the hospital and watched them in the ER trying to bring our dear Izzy back to life. They finally called the TOD at 11am. We were destroyed. Our worlds fell apart. We miss Izabella Jayde Reimer every day. We had her cremated when we got her back from the Medical examiner for the autopsy.

The entire time we were waiting I was pushing the Sheriff investigating for the toxicology report as well as the Coroner and Medical examiner because I knew it had to have been vaccines. She wasn’t herself since that day. After the funeral we were finally able to get the toxicology report. After the investigation on us was closed. The report itself contained no information that was of any value, and the autopsy report was absolutely gruesome. By then it was to late for a second opinion..

Please research and trust your gut about vaccines. If you get them and your kids are fine, kudos. But many of us have suffered immensely and aren’t so lucky.

  • Coronavirus In Numbers

Coronavirus in Numbers…and Why We Really Shouldn’t Panic.

    BE AWARE NOT ALARMED

    So, here it goes:
80,000 People are Sick with Coronavirus at the Moment
of which 77,000 are in China.
If you contract Coronavirus, this still is not a cause for alarm, because:
81% of the Cases are MILD
14% of the Cases are MODERATE
and only 5% of the Cases are CRITICAL

This means that if you do get the virus, you are most likely to recover from it.

This means that if you are under 50 years of age, and not living in China, you are more likely to win the lottery which is a 1 in 45,000,000 chance!

NOW, Let’s take one of the worst days so far – the 10th of February. 108 persons in CHINA died of Coronavirus.
    BUT, on the same day
    26,283 people died of Cancer
24,641 people died of Heart Disease
    4,300 people died of Diabetes
and on that day, suicide, unfortunately, took more lives than the virus did, by 28 times.

Moreover, mosquitoes kill 2,740 people every day, HUMANS kill 1,300 fellow humans every day and snakes kill 137 people every day.

Our advice is simple! We should cherish life every single day. We should care for our lives always, and not only when we are afraid of some virus or other hitting our shores…oh, and don’t forget to wash your hands.👏

  • Stretch And Sweep Is Sexually Violating You

What you need to know because your care provider won’t tell you …

If there was one ritual I’d like to see banned before 40 weeks, it’s the stretch-and-sweep, aka membrane stripping.

The routine stretch-and-sweep is performed during a vaginal exam at any time beginning around 37 weeks. Mothers are seldom told it was done. And rare is the mother who is actually given enough information to make a wise decision. Even if she declines this heinous procedure, it’s often done without her consent (which is called sexual assault outside of the obstetrical/midwifery clinic). I’ve heard from hundreds of women over the years who were ritually violated and suffered the consequences.

A stretch-and-sweep involves having the provider’s gloved fingers manually stretch open the cervix and then strip the baby’s amniotic sack away from the cervical opening. The baby’s amniotic sack is normally adhered to the opening of the cervix in a way that prevents infectious agents from reaching the baby. It’s one of pregnancy’s many safe-guards.

It’s believed that manually dilating the cervix and separating the sack from the opening of the cervix will release extra prostaglandins that could stimulate labour.

Only prostaglandins don’t trigger normal labour. It’s a hormone that ripens the cervix. It’s actually the baby’s lungs that trigger labour when they secrete a protein just when they’re ready for air-breathing. Then oxytocin from mama’s brain brings on contractions.

A membrane stripping is intended to “prevent induction”. What your provider is saying to you (if they tell you) is:

“I will perform a mechanical induction to start labour artificially so that you might avoid a chemical induction after your due date with IV oxytocin in the hospital.”

Yes. A stretch-and-sweep is an induction that is meant to “prevent” induction. It is meant to bypass your baby’s lungs and all of the safety mechanisms of human birth to get the baby out before the baby is ready.

    It hurts.

    It makes you bleed.

It can cause your water to break meaning you now are expected to go to the hospital for a chemical induction.

    It can introduce infection.

It begins non-labour, disorganized, painful, non-dilating contractions most of the time.

Your provider will say that you are in labour with these induced painful non-dilating contractions.

You will be sent to the hospital for augmentation and may end up with a caesarean for failure-to-progress.

It’s a crappy way to have a baby.

Some studies say that doing a membrane stripping doesn’t shorten pregnancy. Other studies say it can shorten pregnancy by a couple of days. All studies say it introduces many risks to you and your baby. It’s a crappy way to have a baby.

And since many providers won’t tell you that they’re going to sexually violate you and put you and your baby in harm’s way, you must not only decline a stretch-and-sweep (which is often ignored – hello criminal offence) but also decline every vaginal exam prior to labour. Those exams have no benefit, give you no useful predictive information and introduce many risks. i.e. keep yer knickers on and yer knees together!

And for those who had a glorious stretch-and-sweep and had a baby a day later (yup, I’ve heard from at least 4 in the last 30 years amidst the several hundreds who have had crappy births), you’d have had the baby anyway. And I’m beyond happy that you had a good experience as most women don’t.
