  • Parents Warning About Olbas Oil

    ⚠️ Olbas Oil ⚠️

I wanted to share my rather daft story with you as I always have a bottle of this knocking around as a nice ‘natural’ medicine for colds and sniffles. I sprinkle it on the kids pillows or a tissue, or in a bowl of water to breathe in and I had no idea until now that it’s actually quite dangerous.

After a week of sleepless nights, I climbed into bed bed last night and reached (in the dark) for my bottle of ‘cough drops’, put 3 drops on my tongue and immediately realised I had picked up the olbas oil by mistake.

I had a drink of water and had a quick courtesy look at the back of the bottle just to check I hadn’t accidentally poisoned myself, turns out I had.

A 2 minute reassurance call to NHS direct later and I ended up spending the night in hospital hooked up to an ECG and being treated as a toxicology patient – all for 3 tiny drops into an adult. Apparently it’s quite high up on the list of bad things to be swallowing, I wasn’t even allowed to drive myself to hospital.

    Parents Warning About Olbas Oil

I’m absolutely fine, apart from being even more tired than I was 🤪 but I wanted to share my tale of stupidity as in 10 years of being a parent, I’ve never once thought to put it out of the kids reach.

For something that can cause eye injurires, breathing difficulties, seizures etc. if applied to eyes, noses or mouths – all it has is a tiny warning on the back. The cap isn’t child proof and it’s often something I would leave by the kids bed without a second thought.

If you have a bottle of this, please please go and put it up high and don’t leave it where small hands can get it. Please feel free to share, as I had absolutely no idea about it, same goes for things like karvol and any essential oils based products.

    I wouldn’t recommend it as a nightcap 😝

  • Dentastix Are Causing Dogs Seizures

    Dentastix Are Causing Dogs Seizures

A warning for all you dog owners. DO NOT and I repeat DO NOT give your dog pedigree dentastix. After a lot of detective work, we have realised that these dentastix were the reason Minnie was having seizures. Her potassium levels came back high (hyperkalemia).

Hyperkalemia is caused by injestion of antifreeze. And guess what dentastix contain? ANTIFREEZE!!! Pedigree obviously don’t display this on their products, instead they display it as Sodium Tripolyphosphate which is a component of antifreeze! Please be careful what you are feeding your dogs. I wouldn’t want my worst enemy to go through what we have with Minnie, it has been awful. Pedigree dentastix are now banned from this house.

Yes there is going to be a debate around it and I’m not saying this can happen to every dog, but it has happened to ours. Do your own research into it and form your own opinion. But I am not the only one who has had bad experiences with dentastix. I completely understand that STTP is in a lot of foods that us as humans eat and also animals, but too much of something isn’t good for you

  • This Is Why You Don’t Give Dogs Chocolate

Chocolate has a toxic ingredient called theobromine which is poisonous to dogs, dark chocolate is the worst  but it is still quite high in milk chocolate.

Urgent treatment may be needed if your dog has eaten chocolate, you can help the vet by telling them how much you think your dog has consumed and bring the wrappers in.

Symptoms for chocolate poisoning will occur between 4 and 24 hours after consumption, normally with vomiting and diarrhoea, increased heart rate, hyperactivity, rapid breathing and possible seizures.

There is no antidote for chocolate poisoning in most cases the vet will make your dog vomit, also they may wash out your dogs stomach or feed them activated charcoal which will help to absorb any theobromine left in the dogs system, they may also need to be placed on a intravenous drip, medication to control heart rate and to stop seizures.

This is obviously very distressing for the dog and can be very upsetting and expensive for the owner.

This post sums it up by Greenbrier emergency animal hospital “This is a great “action shot” of what we start with after your dog presents for a Chocolate Toxicity. Thanks Dr. Antonucci for this picture. Thanks to the dog’s owner for allowing us to post and bringing her in to be fixed. Thanks to my staff for mopping up the floor. Thanks to the air filters for ridding the office of the smell of yucky chocolate. Thanks to the staff member who totally under estimated when placing a single blue pad to catch the vomit”.

Do Not give your dog chocolate and if by accident they get hold of some please keep an eye on them and seek veterinary treatment if needed.

  • Diet Coke Drinkers Beware You May Be Risking Your Life

Trace Lively has taken to social media to warn others of the dangers of drinking diet coke.

“For years I’ve been a Diet Coke drinker. I love the stuff, it’s like crack to me. What I really didn’t know was it was trying to kill me. I’ve always read it’s bad for you….blah blah blah, but it was my only crutch. I thought I can eat healthy, work out, meditate and still drink this stuff. I WAS SO VERY VERY WRONG!

If you have an aneurysm, sitting there in your brain, you can live your whole life and it may never burst, and most likely you would never know it was there. Nobody ever does. Drinking Diet Coke is like putting down a welcome mat for these little bastards. It’s poison slowly weakening your veins and sucking potassium out of your system. A weaken vein means BOOM! You strain too much on the loo, have too much stress, sit down too much, stand too much and that little bastard finally pops.

Diet Coke Drinkers Beware You May Be Risking Your Life

I have another very small one still in there, and you can bet your sweet asteroids you’ll NEVER see me drink another diet drink again. I also wouldn’t drink the high sugar ones either. I am a bloody miracle. The Dr.’s were very concerned in those first few days that I was not going to make it, BUT I AM MAKING IT!!! PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE GIVE IT UP!!! NOTHING is worth this. This doesn’t mean Diet Coke caused my aneurysm, but it sure as heck made it welcome. Get addiction help if you can’t quit. I am not kidding. Please listen to me. Stop putting poison into your body, because if you’re reading this it means I love you. Please feel free to share.

  • Beware Of Ben and Jerrys Ice Cream

Curling up on the sofa with a tub of Ben and Jerry’s is the ideal night for many.
However, you could be doing more than just piling on the calories with the ice cream, after tests revealed traces of the weedkiller glyphosate in some of the makes.
The chemical, better known under the brand name Roundup, is widely used on food crops around the world.
According to the Daily Mail, a test of 14 samples found that 12 brought from across Europe contained glyphosate.
Three of the samples were brought in the UK and were from Half Baked cookie dough and chocolate ice cream, Peanut Butter, and Chocolate Fudge Brownie.

Contamination is thought to have come from the ingredients, such as wheat in cookie dough, used to flavour the ice cream.
The levels were very low and well below the levels set by food safety authorities in the US and Europe.
However glyphosate is at the centre of controversy around the world with some studies suggesting it is a cancer risk.
The UK samples of the ice cream were collected by the campaigning group Beyond GM, which is critical of GM farming.
Its director, Pat Thomas, said:”The industrial food system is failing us all and people are frankly sick of having the word ‘food’ associated with words like ‘risk’, ‘scare’, ‘poison’, ‘fraud’ and ‘contamination’.
“‘Big companies like Ben & Jerrys have a big responsibility that extends beyond marketing jargon. We’d like to see Ben & Jerry’s switch to an organic supply chain which would ensure the safety and integrity of the products they produce.”
Unilever told the Mail: “The bottom line is that our products are safe to eat and the trace levels of glyphosate detected were significantly below all allowable US and European standards.”
It said that, currently, the glyphosate is sprayed on crops, such as wheat and corn, before harvest as a drying agent.
However, the firm said it plans to phase out the use of any crops produced with glyphosate as a drying agent by 2020. It also promised to lobby for other firms to do the same.

The Crop Protection Association, which speaks for Monsanto and other chemical companies, insist glyphosate is safe.
It said: “Glyphosate is amongst the most thoroughly tested herbicides on the market, and those studies by expert regulators have consistently concluded that glyphosate does not pose a risk to public health.
“Glyphosate is a crucial tool in a farmers’ armoury. To put things in perspective, glyphosate is less toxic than baking soda, table salt, the caffeine in our coffee and many other products we all use or consume regularly.”
