  • Here We Go Again With All The Twin Questions

I took the twins to WalMart today for our weekly grocery shopping. An older woman approached me in the cereal aisle, and I instantly sighed in annoyance because I knew the “typical twin questions” were about to start pouring out of her mouth. When I go out in public, I always plan for an additional 20 minutes just for answering questions about twins, and frankly it’s become tedious.

She neared my cart and stopped. “Here we go again” I thought. She asked all the typical things, told me how sweet they were, and continued to babble on with the boys.

I was antsy, and just ready to go. I turned to look down the aisle hoping she would take the hint that I was ready to leave, and as I did she put her hand on top of mine that was resting on the cart. “I know you probably hate this and I’m sorry to take up so much of your time. You see, I lost my only grandchild last year, and about the only time I see kids his age is when I do my grocery shopping” she said.

Suddenly, time didn’t matter. “Well we are about to go look at the fish, you wanna follow us over there and watch them play for a bit?” Her eyes lit up; “I would love that.” We went over and I got the boys out. She spent about 15 minutes watching them bounce around and scream out “FISHY FISHY FISHY” when finally she looked over to me and said “you don’t know what I would give to be able to hear my grandson laugh one last time.” I couldn’t find any words, so I stood in silence grieving for her.

“May I hug your boys?” I nodded. “Thank you so much for giving me your time, I know your hands are full” she said. “No really, it was my pleasure.” She bent down to hug Darrio, my not as friendly twin, and he reached his arms out and said “LUH YOU!!” She hugged Dheigo and then hugged me, and said “I love all 3 of you too” and headed toward the check out.

Do you know what my point is? My point is how quickly my attitude changed once I connected with her as another human being with feelings.

That woman taking too long in the drop off line in the morning? What if her child has to go to his dads for the weekend and she wont get another hug for 3 long days.

The man driving slow when your in a rush to work? What if hes going slow because he knows he is going to be laid off and is worried about his future.

That annoying little kid down the road who always bangs on your door? What if he doesnt get attention at home and just wants a friend.

It made me wonder; how much nicer would we all be if we knew one anothers struggles?

    Raise damn good humans.

  • PIP Payment Is Going To Kill Me

Well the government have done brilliantly on this decision to make everyone who receives pip (personal independent payment ) local government have decided if you are entitled to enhanced rates they will be taking £9 this year towards your care package plus what ever else they decide.

For example they asked me to contribute £12.56 Jan 2019, in April 2019 they said no you don’t pay enough so it’s going up to £17.56 but just had a letter informing me that I now have to pay from July 22nd 2019 £50.06 all of these amounts are weekly so my choice is eat once a day and die quicker because I won’t survive without the help.

I have complexed disabilities which I pay for lots of extras on top of normal utility bills etc I live alone so single income of employment support allowance and personal independence payments housing benefit and council tax support but I also get bedroom taxed and pay towards my council tax I am in a mess and no appeals can be made about the amount I have to pay even though it states on the letter if you have extra payments for items you can ask for it to be taken into account.

They were called today and they stated no appeals but the letter states different so confused fed up scared not looking forward to the future I already have a rare lung disease which is not treatable only manageable but it is progressive so nobody knows how long I have or what the future holds I have been in intensive care 4 times this year so far it’s disgusting making disabled feel responsible for the cost to each local government

  • Imagine Feeling So Lost You Hug A Stranger

    PARENTS.

A handful of us went to the Pittsburgh Pride Parade today, sporting our FREE DAD HUGS and FREE MOM HUGS t-shirts. We gave out hundreds of hugs. Hundreds. Some were super happy hugs. But others were like these two… and there were way too many like them.

Let me tell you about these two.

He was kicked out at 19 when his parents found out. They haven’t spoken to him since. He cried on my shoulder. Sobbed. Squeezed me with everything he had. I felt a tiny bit of that pain that he carries with him every minute of every day. He was abandoned because of who he loves. And on June 9th, 2019, he was participating in a celebration of love when he was brought to his emotional knees by a shirt that said “FREE DAD HUGS” on a complete stranger.

Her story? I don’t know the specifics. But I know that she saw me from across the street. I wasn’t paying attention. By the time she got to me, she had tears in her eyes. She stood in front of me and looked up at me, with a look of sadness and helplessness that I’ll never forget. She hugged me with everything she had. And I hugged her back.

She held on for so long, melting into me, and thanked me endlessly. And I can’t stop thinking about her. What she must be going thru with her family… the ones who are supposed to be there for her no matter what. Who does she go to when she needs advice on love, money or just life? Who does she share old memories with that only her parents would have been there for? What are her holidays like? How often does she hope for that phone call, with unconditional love on the other end? I don’t know her story. But it doesn’t feel like a huge leap to assume she’s lost those who should love her the most and forever.

Imagine that, parents. Imagine that your child feels SO LOST FROM YOU that they sink into the arms of a complete stranger and sob endlessly just because that stranger is wearing a shirt offering hugs from a dad. Think of the depths of their pain. Try to imagine how deep those cuts must be.

Please don’t be the parent of a child that has to shoulder that burden. I met WAY too many of them, of all ages, today.

And if by chance anyone knows these folks, please let them know they can reach out any time they need a surrogate dad to talk to. I’ll be there.

  • You’re going to lose people along the way, my friend

You’re Going To Lose People Along The Way

And it will hurt like hell….

You’re going to lose people along the way

People you thought you’d never lose.

People you truly believed would always be there.

And it’s going to hurt like hell.

But that, my friend, is life

People change, relationships change. Some evolve. Some disintegrate.

Some people leave through no will of their own and that hurts the most. They didn’t want to go.

But you, you will survive it all.

    You will.

You will look back and realise that the people you need, really need, are still here.

And that the other relationships you lost along the way, have taught you something that made you better.

    And that’s life.

Hold close those, who are in your life now, and remember the ones who left, fondly. Even the ones who broke your heart.

    Regret nothing.

Use the feelings of pain, to commit to a life here and now, a life where you take no one or nothing for granted. Where you cherish every minute with those people you love.

You’re going to lose people along the way, my friend.

    But that is life.

    Every minute counts.

  • Never Tell Your Child The Policeman Will Take Them Away

    A view from a policeman

If a child goes missing. Wouldn’t you want them to tell the police, “I can’t find my mummy/daddy”, so that we could keep them safe and reunite them?

    We would! 👮

But we still walk past the little tinkers getting a telling off, crying, or sometimes neither, in the street and hear their parents say, “Behave, or that police officer will come and take you away!”

    Stop! ✋

Don’t teach children to be scared of the police if they get lost. Next time you see one of us, come and say “Hi!” There might be some nee-nors in it for them (not you 😅)! 🚔
