  • Let’s Talk About Autism And The Emergency Room

    Let’s talk about #Autism & the Emergency Room 🏥🚨

Did you know that of the individuals with autism who use the emergency department, almost 1 in 4 are sedated or restrained to keep them calm? (https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/m/pubmed/25433045/)

It doesn’t have to be like that. Being physically restrained like that can cause psychological trauma. Sometimes sedation and or restraint can be the safest option, yes. However, it should never be the go to choice.

When staff are compassionate and understanding it can prevent having to turn to physical restraint.

Emergency room staff can do this by speaking in a clear, concise manner. Explain to the patient what is going to happen, and why it’s important. Be patient and give the individual sufficient time to process the information. Staff should be open to suggestions from parents/caregivers, as they know the individual best.

Successful emergency room trips are possible with autism when you have caring staff who are willing to listen and understand! 💙

  • Men Don’t Be Afraid To Get Checked Out

April 2017 Luther has found a lump in his testicle, I had told Luther as soon as we had found it to head to the doctors, for a couple of months Luther had told me many times he was seeing a doctor and we were just awaiting a time for him to receive surgery to remove the testicle. Every time Luther saw the doctor he had told me, my body is just run down or a comment close to. It was than a couple of months later, 29th of November to be exact. Luther woke me up at 12:46am and told me he had chest pains, he wanted me to take him to the hospital, so I did.

It was then the doctors had rushed Luther into an emergency ct scan, we had mention to the doctor Luther had testicular cancer, the doctor than gave us the heart breaking news the cancer had spread. The nurses at the hospital asked when Luther had been diagnosed, I said April some time, it was than the nurses had told me there was no record of Luther at any hospital or doctors since 2015!

Gladstone hospital then emergency flew us to Brisbane, we heard the heart breaking news the cancer had spread, from his testicular to his liver, lung, kidney and his lymph nodes in his abdomen. Sadly 8 days later I had lost him! PLEASE DONT BE AFRAID TO SEE A DOCTOR IT COULD SAVE YOUR LIFE! If Luther had of early we would still have him with us today! Please check your balls guys! There’s always help!

If you feel a swelling or lump, it’s important to get it checked out (though most lumps won’t be cancer). A heavy feeling in your balls can also be a warning sign. And if you have cancer and it’s spread to other parts of your body, you might get back, groin or stomach pain, breathlessness or a persistent cough.

  • We Can Help Paramedics With One Simple Act

Finally a post goes viral for all the right reasons,

The original writer of this is unknown but the message is still very clear, and we have to say we 100% agree with him or her.

“While I sat in Greg’s drinking my brew and eating my sandwich 2 paramedics who were obviously taking a chance to grab A quick bite between call outs came in and joined the queue waiting to get their morning breakfast and cuppa.

Just as they got to the till they got a shout on the radio.

They both laughed at each other and said we never wanted one anyway.

They both rushed out to help someone, possibly even save a life, or live’s.

Now I am only assuming this but I would have thought that those 2 paramedics have one of the most important jobs in the world and everyone else in the queue this morning was going to work, waiting for the shops to open or like me just having a quick brew to keep warm.

Now here is a thought what if we use this social media thing and get people and companies to allow paramedics and all other emergency services to jump the queue and get served as soon as they come in, so they stand half a chance of a drink and food before they go on their day helping people.

Can all my friends and there friends share this post so it may reach the big companies and other people who just might give their spot in the queue.

I myself would always stand back and let them go in front of me after all their next shout may god forbid could be me or someone I know or I love”.

Lets all let not only paramedics but any emergency service workers go ahead of us, after all they are the ones we call upon at our most vunerable times

  • Never Tell Your Child The Policeman Will Take Them Away

    A view from a policeman

If a child goes missing. Wouldn’t you want them to tell the police, “I can’t find my mummy/daddy”, so that we could keep them safe and reunite them?

    We would! 👮

But we still walk past the little tinkers getting a telling off, crying, or sometimes neither, in the street and hear their parents say, “Behave, or that police officer will come and take you away!”

    Stop! ✋

Don’t teach children to be scared of the police if they get lost. Next time you see one of us, come and say “Hi!” There might be some nee-nors in it for them (not you 😅)! 🚔
