  • Teacher Lies And Says She Loves Them All The Same

Morning everybody……… Are we sitting comfortably?

    Then I’ll begin……………..

As she stood in front of her infants class on the very first day of school, she told the children an untruth. Like most teachers, she looked at her students and said that she loved them all the same. However, that was impossible, because there in the front row, slumped in his seat, was a little boy named Teddy Stoddard.

Mrs. Thompson had watched Teddy the year before and noticed that he did not play well with the other children, that his clothes were messy and that he constantly needed a bath. In addition, Teddy could be unpleasant.

It got to the point where Mrs. Thompson would actually take delight in marking his papers with a broad red pen, making bold X’s and then putting a big “F” at the top of his papers.

At the school where Mrs. Thompson taught, she was required to review each child’s past records and she put Teddy’s off until last. However, when she reviewed his file, she was in for a surprise.

Teddy’s first grade teacher wrote, “Teddy is a bright child with a ready laugh. He does his work neatly and has good manners… he is a joy to be around..”

His second grade teacher wrote, “Teddy is an excellent student, well liked by his classmates, but he is troubled because his mother has a terminal illness and life at home must be a struggle.”

His third grade teacher wrote, “His mother’s death has been hard on him. He tries to do his best, but his father doesn’t show much interest and his home life will soon affect him if some steps aren’t taken.”

Teddy’s fourth grade teacher wrote, “Teddy is withdrawn and doesn’t show much interest in school. He doesn’t have many friends and he sometimes sleeps in class.”

By now, Mrs. Thompson realized the problem and she was ashamed of herself. She felt even worse when her students brought her Christmas presents, wrapped in beautiful ribbons and bright paper, except for Teddy’s. His present was clumsily wrapped in the heavy, brown paper That he got from a grocery bag Mrs. Thompson took pains to open it in the middle of the other presents. Some of the children started to laugh when she found a rhinestone bracelet with some of the stones missing, and a bottle that was one-quarter full of perfume.. But she stifled the children’s laughter when she exclaimed how pretty the bracelet was, putting it on, and dabbing some of the perfume on her wrist. Teddy Stoddard stayed after school that day just long enough to say, “Mrs. Thompson, today you smelled just like my Mom used to.” After the children left, she cried for at least an hour.

On that very day, she quit teaching reading, writing and arithmetic. Instead, she began to teach children. Mrs. Thompson paid particular attention to Teddy. As she worked with him, his mind seemed to come alive. The more she encouraged him, the faster he responded. By the end of the year, Teddy had become one of the smartest children in the class and, despite her lie that she would love all the children the same, Teddy became one of her “teacher’s pets..”

A year later, she found a note under her door, from Teddy, telling* her that she was still the best teacher he ever had in his whole life.

Six years went by before she got another note from Teddy. He then wrote that he had finished school, third in his class, and she was still the best teacher he ever had in life.

Four years after that, she got another letter, saying that while things had been tough at times, he’d stayed in school, had stuck with it, and would soon graduate from college with the highest of honors. He assured Mrs. Thompson that she was still the best and favorite teacher he had ever had in his whole life.

Then four more years passed and yet another letter came. This time he explained that after he got his bachelor’s degree, he decided to go a little further. The letter explained that she was still the best and favorite teacher he ever had. But now his name was a little longer…. The letter was signed, Dr Theodore F. Stoddard,

The story does not end there. You see, there was yet another letter that spring. Teddy said he had met this girl and was going to be married. He explained that his father had died a couple of years ago and he was wondering if Mrs. Thompson might agree to sit at the wedding in the place that was usually reserved for the mother of the groom.

Of course, Mrs. Thompson did. And guess what? She wore that bracelet, the one with several rhinestones missing. Moreover, she made sure she was wearing the perfume that Teddy remembered his mother wearing on their last Christmas together.

They hugged each other, and Dr. Stoddard whispered in Mrs. Thompson’s ear, “Thank you Mrs. Thompson for* believing in me. Thank you so much for making me feel important and showing me that I could make a difference.”

Mrs. Thompson, with tears in her eyes, whispered back. She said, “Teddy, you have it all wrong. You were the one who taught me that I could make a difference. I didn’t know how to teach until I met you.”

(For you that don’t know, Teddy Stoddard is the Dr. at Iowa Methodist Hospital in Des Moines that has the Stoddard Cancer Wing.)

Warm someone’s heart today. . . pass this along. I love this story so very much, I cry every time I read it. Just try to make a difference in someone’s life today? tomorrow? Just “do it”.

Random acts of kindness, I think they call it……..

  • My Baby Boy Jude Died Here

Six years ago we spent Thanksgiving weekend getting ready for two more people to join our family. We had no idea then who was coming, the wonderful chaos that would be Thomas and Jude. All we knew was how happy, grateful, thankful we were.

Soon this room was filled with two little boys. Sleepless nights, cries, diaper changes, laughter, toddler babble, and love.

Three and a half years ago Jude died here.

Somehow this room has recovered, kind of, despite only containing one bed. One little boy. Half the laughter. Half the chaos. We can exist here. We can sing and play and love, and know that Jude is still part of our lives. But he should still be playing with us, singing with us, causing trouble. He’s not, because three and a half years ago a flu outbreak came through our community and stole his life from him, stole him from us.

The flu is preventable when we all do our part. ~3500 Canadians and ~36,000 Americans die from the flu every single year, but they don’t have to. The flu shot is starting to become available throughout Canada now, and is easily accessible through the US. If you can find it near you, please get it now. Every flu shot might stop the flu from reaching someone who might not survive it. You could save someone’s grandpa, pregnant wife, dad fighting cancer, or Jude. You can do that. That’s everything.

Thanksgiving is complicated for us now. We have a lot to be thankful for, but we’ve also lost a lot. It’s hard. Help us prevent others from being in our shoes. Get your flu shot, stay home when sick, cover coughs and sneezes, and wash your hands at least eight times a day. Whose life could you save?

  • Last Night Olivia Nearly Died And It Was My Fault

    Last night Olivia nearly died.

    And it was my fault.

I made her and Oscar a snack, handful of grapes and some dried cereal.

It was the first time since hearing about that poor child who died chocking on a grape that I didn’t cut them in half.

I figured- she’s almost 5, she isn’t the kind of kid to shovel food and choke, and I was rushing to finish cleaning the house.

So off she went up stairs with her bowls of snack to carry on playing with her brother. I continued hoovering, luckily I’d switched it off when I heard her at the top of the stairs. I knew in an instant what had happened. I ran to her. She couldn’t breathe.

She had gone to chew a grape and it had shot to the back of her throat, gone down and got wedged.

I turned her over and hit her as hard as I could between the shoulder blades and still nothing. She was looking me dead in the eyes and her lips turned blue as she couldn’t breathe.at.all.

Jamie finally managed to perform some manoeuvre on her that sent a grape flying across the room.

I lay here now watching her sleep I’ve cried most the night & my heart hurts as I look at her chest where there are still nail indentations from where she clawed at her throat for air, PLEASE PLEASE let this be a reminder to all the parents out there – my life nearly changed forever last night all because of my carelessness.

  • Heatstroke Warning For Dog Owners

    ***Heatstroke Warning for Dog Owners***

This was posted by a vet; they have given us permission for it to be copied.

Today a dog died of severe heat stroke – exercised at 9 o’clock in the morning. If it was a child, the parents would be convicted of man slaughter and sent to prison. The long coated dog was being exercised in the local park at 9am this morning – it was already 21˚C.

The owners where throwing a ball for the dog. Our loyal faithful friends will still pander to our requests of going with us for a walk or fetching the ball thrown even when they are under extreme stress of excessive heat. They don’t know to self regulate, because their pack leader has instructed them to walk with them or chase a ball etc.

I turned up to the local park to park my car and walk to work. It was in the car park that I discovered the dog with the owners next to their car, suffering from severe heat stroke. The scene was; the dog lying flat-out on his side, semi-conscious, with extreme panting.

His mouth and tongue were swollen up and a dark red/purple colour, there was a white frothy coating of saliva, the tongue and gums being fairly dry. The owners were trying to get the dog to drink some water, but the dog was entirely unable to do so.

His belly was distended from panting and gulping air; this in itself can then restrict breathing. I was not equipped to take the dog’s temperature, but I could feel it was dangerously high. His pulse however was unusually slow.

I had water in my car and doused the dog’s coat down and we wetted a towel to stretcher the dog in to the car and for him to lay on in transit. The dog was not registered with my practice, so I instructed the owner to take the dog to their own vet immediately.Once I had finished my shift at work, I phoned the owner’s vet to see if they could tell me how the dog was.

He was dead. A 5-year-old, fit and healthy dog – dead. A death that was completely preventable. I asked the vet for details explaining that I was going to write this post. They were in support as long as names weren’t mentioned.

Names are irrelevant, as this story will be happening all over the country. The owners took the dog straight to their practice were he was treated immediately. His body temperature was just shy of 42˚C. A normal temperature range for a dog is 38.3˚C to 39.2˚C, a rise of just 1 – 2˚C can have major effects on the dog’s body systems.

The nurses commenced cooling of the dog and the vet put him on a drip with rapid infusion of fluids and electrolytes. However, within 10 – 15 mins of being admitted the dog began to seizure. Seizures are caused when the electrical impulses in the brain misfires and cause like an electrical storm in the brain so the muscle fibres of the body rapidly twitch uncontrollably.

In this case, the excess heat in the brain disturbs the electrical impulses. This is an added issue as the activity of the muscles then acts to increase the dog’s temperature even more. It was at this point that the vet went to gain consent to administer anaesthetic to the dog to try to reduce the seizure and lower the respiratory rate.

But as the vet was talking to the owner, approximately 20 mins after arriving at the practice, the dog began to vomit and pass diarrhoea. The vomit and diarrhoea were full of blood. This even to the untrained reader, you can appreciate is bad news. Once this was discovered, the dog’s gums were checked and small red/black spots were present, along with areas of bleeding on the abdomen.

At this point the vet had to return to the owners and request consent for euthanasia. The dog was suffering from disseminated intravascular coagulopathy. This is a fancy veterinary term that means the dog’s body systems was unable to clot his blood and therefore he was bleeding internally. In the veterinary world, it is nicknamed Death Is Coming. The process is not fully understood, but it is thought that the excess temperature prevents the body from performing the myriad of chemical reactions that allow it to function normally. Loosely, this causes the body to activate clotting, causing hundred of clots within the body. Once all the clotting factors are used up, the blood can no longer clot, so widespread haemorrhage ensues.

It causes major organ failure; the kidneys, the liver, the heart and the lungs cease to function effectively. With a bit of luck, the dog is unconscious by this stage, as this must be hugely uncomfortable and a terrifying death. For all those dog owners who think this was because the dog was chasing a ball and that is why he overheated, this can happen with your dog sat in the sun in the garden.

It can take up to 60 days for a dog to acclimatize to a change in climate. I am pretty sure 60 days ago it was pouring with rain.Once the dog becomes mildly overheated, unless they are cooled, they will continue to overheat. Dogs cannot sweat effectively and can only really lose body heat through panting. The process of panting can in itself cause excess body temperature if it is prolonged or laboured.

So, if you think it is too hot to put a thick coat on and go for a run, don’t make your dog do the same. If you think it is too hot to sit in direct sunshine for more than a few minutes whilst wearing a woolly jumper, then don’t make your dog do so. If it is too hot to stand on the pavement with your shoe and socks off, then don’t make your dog walk on it. If you don’t want to sit in your car without the air con on even if you have all windows wound down, don’t leave your dog in the car.If you are ever in any doubt of how to care for your dog in the warm or hot weather, speak your local vet practice. Better to speak to them now than your vet speaking to you to request consent for euthanasia.”

  • I Left My Baby To Die Alone In The Cold

I’m 62 with a husband, 2 grown children and a grandmother to 4 I have a car and a mortgage and to the world a typical happy mum and grandmother but none of them know my secret and they never will. The shame of anyone knowing would kill me and tear my family apart. Nobody can ever know that I killed my baby.

Please don’t judge me before you know my story.

I was brought up in a strict religious family. My parents were very loving and I had a happy childhood but our lives revolved around the church. school, mass on Sundays the works I never knew any different all my friends families were the same it was normal right until I met Craig.

I was 14 and had never had a boyfriend before, he was cute and funny and had all this freedom that I had never known. I quickly fell in love. My parents would never have let us date. Craig was 17 had left school and was at college being older he had more experience than me, I’d never even kissed a boy!

We would meet in secret whenever possible and one day we had sex. We had fooled around but never done the deed never even talked about it so we didn’t use contraception foolishly thinking I couldn’t get pregnant the first time right.

Two months later after missing another period we did a test and it came back positive I thought Craig loved me but he never spoke to me again. I was now 15 pregnant and alone. My parents would have gone crazy and I would have been an outcast from my family and friends I didn’t know what to do. I tried ignoring it hoping it would go away that the test was wrong but my slowly swelling belly told me different so I hid my little problem.

I would take sanitary towels and through them away so my mom would think I was getting my period, pass morning sickness off as exam nerves and hide under loose baggy clothes. I spent hours hiding in my room pretending to study but really I was trying to work out what to do. Then one night in december the pains started and my water broke. It hurt so much and I was scared.

I waited until my parents went to bed before sneaking out. I started walking and the pains grew stronger and I found myself at my church. I needed to push so I snuck round the side out of view and gave birth to my beautiful son. I was terrified all of a sudden it was real. I managed to cut the cord and wrapped him in my cardigan but i couldn’t take him home.

So I left him on the steps of the church I thought someone would find him and take him home. I quietly snuck back home and cried all night wanting my baby. The next day I pretended to be ill  so I could watch the news of the good Samaritan who found my baby instead I saw the news report of a body being found of a newborn baby.

That night around dinner we prayed for the soul of the baby and my parents dammed the evil mother who murdered her child. I knew then I couldn’t tell them the truth instead I have lived with my secret ever since.

Please don’t judge me too harshly I was a young girl with nowhere to turn besides nobody could judge me more than I do, I am now in my early 60’s and urge any young girl out there who is pregnant and scared to reach out to someone to get help!

  • Last Photo Before Her Dad Took His Life

This is a picture of my daughter the night before her Dad took his own life. 4-years old and her first night of ballet class. Full of joy. Full of innocence. The worst thing that had ever happened to her was dropping her ice cream cone at the county fair.

The next day her Dad waved goodbye to her as we drove off to our play date and then he got in his car and went and shot himself on my Grandpa’s land.

I had to sit on her little bed with her and her fuzzy stuffed animals and baby dolls and I had to tell my 4-year old that her Dad had died. She stared at me and then said, “Mama? What does die mean?” It took days, weeks for her to fully understand…….even after she seen him in his coffin…..that he was not ever coming home and that’s what die means.

If you are having suicidal thoughts and you have children? Your children will not be better off without you. Your kids need you. Your death will take away some of their innocence. They will have nightmares. They will wake up sweating and screaming. Look at their photo and figure out a way to keep yourself alive on this earth. Don’t drop a load of pain, guilt, abandonment, trauma, and grief on their shoulders. They are so little. They need you. Stay. If for nothing else…….if for no one else……stay for them. Find your fight and get yourself the help you deserve so that you can care for your children.

This girl knows things other kids don’t know.

She knows how her Dad died. I told her the truth….not the gory and scary details…..but just the plain and simple truth that he hurt himself so that he would die. She knows what suicide is and openly says the word when most adults shy away from it.

She also knows that he was a very loving, kind, and good person who made a very wrong choice.

She knows that he was human, that he was sick, and that he was terrified and she has deep compassion for him because she too knows what it’s like to be scared.

She knows that he loved her to the moon and back a billion times and he still does.

Telling her the truth opened up conversations about mental health, love, emotions, strength, grief, God, spirituality, and more. She doesn’t judge him or blame him…..only loves him.

    She forgives her Dad.

She knows that he didn’t leave because he didn’t love her but because he had no fight left in him to stay.

She misses him…….we all do…..every day. It’s a soul deep missing when a child loses a parent.

    She barely remembers him.

She still loves him…….very, very much.

She will grow up not knowing what it’s like to have her very own Dad to protect her, laugh with her, care for her, and love her.

If she grows up someday, gets married, and has children of her own? That will be the first time since she was 4 that she sees first hand in her own home what a Dad does.

I look at this photo and my heart hurts so much for this little girl.

This girl is now 7 and she is happy again. She is joyful, smart, kind-hearted, loving, adventurous, compassionate, and the bravest girl I have ever met in my entire life.

So, you. The guy who is thinking of taking his life. The guy who is sitting at the dinner table right now with his kids and wife eating tacos and you’re smiling and you’re laughing but in your mind you are planning your own death for the next day?

    I’m asking you to stay.

I’m asking you to tell your wife your plans.

I’m asking you to close your eyes and remember being a little kid. Remember how much you loved and needed both of your parents.

    Fight for your life.

    You belong here on earth.

You are worthy and so, so loved.

    Your family needs you.

You belong here on a Tuesday night eating tacos with your kids and your wife laughing at inside jokes only a family understands.

You deserve to watch your children grow up.

You deserve their hugs and kisses and giggles.

    They need you.

Maybe pleading with you to stay on this earth won’t work. Maybe it’s not enough…..maybe you’ll still go. I don’t know if spreading this love and pleading will work because I never got that chance to do that with my husband. But maybe it will help you. Maybe it will help just one of you and that’s why my children and I share our story.

    So, you. Please stay.

Yes, they will survive and move forward in their lives if you leave but they won’t be better off without you.

They will forever be missing a piece of themselves….a piece of their heart.

    Love and strength, Nik❤❤❤
