  • The Amazing Story Behind This Breastfeeding Painting

This painting of a young woman breastfeeding an old man in a prison cell was sold for Euros 30 million. The painting may look perverse but the story behind is from historical records.

The poor man was sentenced to “death by starvation” for stealing a loaf of bread during the reign of Louis XIV in France. The woman was his only daughter and the only visitor to his cell. She was allowed to visit him daily but was frisked thoroughly such that no food was taken in.

When after 4 months the man still survived with no weight loss, the authorities were perplexed and started spying on her in the cell and to their utter astonishment found her to breastfeed her father to the fullest sharing her baby’s milk. The judges then realizing the compassion and love of the woman for her father, pardoned the father and set him free.

This piece of history brings into focus how deep is a woman’s compassion in our daily lives that men often tend to overlook.

  • Breastfeeding Is NOT Normalized

Breastfeeding is NOT normalized and I’m going to tell you why.

2 days ago Ashley Graham posted this picture of her looking sexy as hell and got a whole lot of love on her post.
1 day prior she posted the picture of her feeding her baby and every other comment talks about how she needs to cover up and she shouldn’t expose herself like that and other crap comments.

Why is it okay to post sexy bikini pictures but it’s not okay to post a breastfeeding picture?

I hope the woman worried about her “8 year old son” seeing this is also keeping her son away from beaches and pools.

I hope the women preaching that Ashley needs a cover her baby while he eats in public are also covering themselves while they eat.

I hope those commenting on her picture how “inappropriate” it is are also telling Victoria’s Secret to take down their advertising pictures in malls.

Breastfeeding is not normalized. People still think it’s gross or weird or inappropriate. This is why we have to fight so hard to normalize it.

NEWS FLASH: Breastfeeding advocates aren’t shaming you for bottle/formula feeding your baby. We simply believe in every mother’s right to breastfeed if that’s what she chooses. We believe in the right to be properly educated on breastfeeding and to have proper access to resources when needed. We believe that women have a right to breastfeeding support.

And we believe that every woman has the right to publicly feed their baby any way they choose without being shamed for it!

A lot of ignorant people are completely missing the point of this post. The “likes” don’t matter. Yes, the breastfeeding picture has more “likes” but have you read the comments? They’re horrible. While the bikini picture has less “likes” there’s more support and uplifting comments on that post.

  • There’s No Trophy For Labour

    “There’s no trophy Ashley”

The best 4 words my husband could have said to me in that delivery room. It put my whole world as a Mom into perspective. I was in agony and trying to decide whether or not to get an epidural. I had no idea I was already at the very end of my labor and would be pushing Leo out within minutes. All I knew was that I was in pain and couldn’t imagine laboring like that for what I thought would be a few more hours.

I was trying to talk to him between contractions on the verge of tears and he lovingly spoke lots of support and some truth into my universe with, “There’s no trophy Ashley.”

Then when I was fretting about supplementing with some formula those first few days and not wanting to feel like I was already failing at breastfeeding I heard those words again, “There’s no trophy Ashley.”

There it hit me. As moms in today’s world it can feel like we’re all competing for a trophy that doesn’t exist. I literally thought in that delivery room that I would somehow be “less than” as mother for tapping out and asking for the drugs. Like there would be a gold medal or AT LEAST a gold sticker on my medical chart for having a natural birth. And I felt like I was letting some invisible committee down when we bought formula to help him pass the amniotic fluid he had swallowed.

Since having this third sweet boy six weeks ago I’ve given lots more thought to the invisible trophies we create as moms. Some society creates for us. Standards we try so hard to measure up to even though the contest is make believe and we were made to live in community, not competition.

🏆There’s no trophy for delivering naturally vs. opting for an epidural or having a C-section.

🏆There’s no trophy for breastfeeding vs. bottle feeding.

🏆There’s no trophy for losing the baby weight the fastest.

🏆There’s no trophy for cutest delivery gown (FOR THE LOVE, it’s okay to look like you just had a baby!!!).

🏆There’s no trophy for most creative birthday party theme.

🏆There’s no trophy for how many activities you sign your kids up for.

[This list could go on forever]

My husband has no idea how meaningful those words have been allowing me to relax into having a newborn again. And I wanted to invite you to relax into motherhood with me.

🤱Because the only trophy you’ll carry through life is the bond you create with your baby. And like I’ve said before, we all go home from the hospital with a big basket of mesh undies and sanitary pads the size of our newborns no matter how glamorous our Insta pics look.

  • Myths And Truths Of Breastfeeding

🤱Whether you have chosen to / are able to breast feed or bottle feed let us start by saying we respect you just for loving your baby!

Outdated advice and misinformation is deterring mums from breastfeeding and making them feel like they are doing something wrong.

So…for the breastfeeding Mummas among you please see the below myth vs truth and feel free to message us for any advice!

❌MYTH❌ Babies feed every 3 hours on the hour!

✅TRUTH✅ Babies usually feed between every 2 and 4 hours however, it is not unusual for babies to feed more often, almost constantly in fact, during a growth spurt or to boost your milk supply.

❌MYTH❌ If your baby still seems hungry after a feed you should feed them a bottle.

✅TRUTH✅ Giving your baby a bottle after a feed could deplete your milk supply and could hinder your latch in the early weeks. If your baby has lost a certain % of body weight then your midwife may recommend supplementing with a bottle.

❌MYTH❌ Babies should sleep through the night once they are eating solid food.

✅TRUTH✅ It is perfectly normal for infants, breastfed or not, to wake up in the night for a feed or comfort.

    ❌MYTH❌Breastfeeding is easy for everyone.

✅TRUTH✅ It all goes swiftly for some Mummas but for others there can be a minefield of issues from a shallow latch, tongue ties, a baby with a bubble pallet, low milk supply, and much much more. So think before you label a Mumma as a quitter! And in fact…some Mum’s just don’t want to breastfeed and frankly…that is nobody elses business 🤷‍♀️

EDIT : To echo the words of the inspiring lady below…It is indeed a myth that every woman is able to exclusively breastfeed! For those that can’t it does not have to be all or nothing! See pic in comments of Ella using an amazing system that allows her to both breastfeed and supplement at the same time. 💛

  • Why Do We Need A Black Breastfeeding Week?

Why do we need a black breasfeeding week?

    Reason 1)

You were afraid to nurse your young

lest fallen breast offend your master’s sight and he should flee to firmer loveliness.

And so you passed them, your children, on to me.

Flesh that was your flesh and blood

that was your blood drank the sustenance of life from me.

And as I gave suckle I knew I nursed my own child’s enemy.

    I could have lied,

told you your child was fed till it was dead of hunger.

But I could not find the heart to kill orphaned innocence.

For as it fed, it smiled and burped and gurgled with content

and as for color knew no difference.

    Yes, in that first while

I kept your sons and daughters alive.

But when they grew strong in blood

and bone that was of my milk

you taught them to hate me.

Put your decay in their hearts and upon their lips so that strength that was of myself

    turned and spat upon me,

despoiled my daughters, and killed my sons.

    You know I speak true.

Though this is not true for all of you.

  • This Poster Is A Perfect Example Of Anti-Breastfeeding

This poster is a perfect example of anti-breastfeeding “information”. This notion that you can’t eat certain foods when breastfeeding is not based in science. Let’s look at some of the information.

First of all let’s look at foods that “okay” for breastfeeding mothers. Nothing really wrong with what they say except that you don’t have to take in calcium to make milk with calcium. But the real problem is that this is a diet for people who are relatively affluent. Many mothers could not afford to eat such a diet and thus be frightened into formula feeding, which, I should emphasize is actually more expensive that the foods mentioned here. This is a stratagem used by formula companies. A prime example a few years ago was a campaign by one formula company in Brazil, supported by the Brazilian pediatric society, saying that your breastfed baby eats what you eat. Posters were widely distributed showing a baby suckling at a breast that looks like a doughnut, or looks like a hamburger.

What about the panels of foods “to avoid”.

    1. Sugary foods. The poster says in this section to avoid fatty foods and salty foods as well as sugary foods. We all should try to keep our sugar, salt and fat intake at a reasonable level. But to imply that if you eat a lot of sugar your baby has an increased risk of obesity is just plain wrong. Breastmilk, in fact, does not change much in response to what you eat. It changes from morning to evening, from day to day, from month 1 to month 6, and later, but not because of what you eat. But if you eat a lot of sugar, your milk will have the same amount of sugar as if you ate no sugar at all.

    2. “You might find that just a dash of pepper is enough to make your baby irritated and fussy for hours”. This is pure fantasy. There is no evidence for this being true. And it is unlikely that anything in pepper or other spices would get into the milk in quantities that would bother the baby.

    3. Citrus fruits? “Certain compounds” are supposed to the irritating to the baby´s gut. Oh, please! If these “certain compounds got into the milk would they not be irritating to the breast or nipple?

    4. Caffeine? Babies do not excrete caffeine as rapidly as adults true, but so little gets into the milk that a cup or two of coffee will not bother the baby. Caffeine is given to premature babies as a treatment and nobody worries about how they might excrete caffeine. It’s not right to deprive breastfeeding mothers from drinking coffee and tea in reasonable amounts. This poster eliminates much of what mothers like to eat.

    5. Processed foods? Not a great choice for anyone, this is not specific to breastfeeding mothers. But just as above, the preservatives will not get into the milk in any significant quantities.

    6. Garlic? Are they insane? Garlic does not bother babies. This is prejudice against people who eat garlic. Most of the world loves garlic and eat it when the baby breastfeeds without harm to anyone.

    7. No peppermint, fennel, parsley, or chamomile? There is no evidence for this to show that the way people typically eat these can reach therapeutic levels.

    8. Alcohol, no level of alcohol in the milk is safe for the breastfed baby? Except that almost no alcohol gets into the milk. See this article http://ibconline.ca/maternal-medications/. Alcohol is discussed near the end of the article, but it’s worth reading the whole thing.

This poster is an appalling attempt to frighten women out of breastfeeding and enjoying what they like to eat. These restrictions on what breastfeeding mothers can eat have been debunked decades ago. Let’s encourage good nutrition for everyone, and let’s stop haranguing breastfeeding mothers into stopping breastfeeding by worrying them about their diets.

You can find a more about how to prevent problems with breastfeeding, including preventing fussiness, “colic”, “reflux” “allergy to something in the mother’s milk” and much more in my ebook called Breastfeeding: Empowering Parents: www.ibconline.ca/ebook

  • Breastfeeding Is Hard Enough

First thing first, did you know that breastfeeding your child is the MOST nutritious thing your baby can consume?

Did you know if your baby was to get sick the baby’s latch will send your body a signal and make NATURAL medicine for your child? Throughout Ariyah’s life i think she’s been sick about 3 times. which is GREAT for her to be 15 months old.

Do you even know what breastfeeding moms had to go through to breastfeed? Do you know when i first had my baby nobody ever told be about how bad afterbirth was? ON TOP of cluster feeding (which is when your baby wants to be latched for hours and hours) do you know your nipples bleed and get scabs when you first start breastfeeding?

Do you imagine how painful that is? Do you know when your baby latches it causes you to have contractions because the baby sucking gives your body a signal the baby is out and & May start the healing process? Did you think about sore nipples plus contractions and clusterfeedind all at once? Do you think someone that was this dedicated is gonna give a fuck if you want us to suffocate our child after going through all of that?

Did you know we don’t give a fuck about your opinion 😊

  • Shout Out To The Mamas Nursing Through The Tears

Shout out to all the mamas nursing through the tears on the shower floor, in the backseat of the car, under the piles of laundry, on the couch at 3am, in the cereal aisle of the grocery store. Many mamas go through this you are not alone.

You are making magic (even if you don’t feel magical.) You are strong and powerful (even if you feel like crumbling to the floor and sleeping for a week.) You are seen and loved and supported (even in those dark, lonely moments when it feels like you alone are responsible for the tiny, fragile life at your breast and the weight of that thought is crushing.) You’ve got this babe, and we’ve got you!

Breast milk contains antibodies that help your baby fight off viruses and bacteria. Breastfeeding lowers your baby’s risk of having asthma or allergies. Plus, babies who are breastfed exclusively for the first 6 months, without any formula, have fewer ear infections, respiratory illnesses, and bouts of diarrhea.

(share to a bad-ass breastfeeding mama who may need a reminder of her strength.)

  • Mum Cuts Nan Out Of Her Life For Feeding Her Daughter

I would like to make others aware that you have every right to cut someone out of your baby or child’s life if they do not respect your wishes.

Last year my daughter Olivia was with my partners mum (her nana) for the day whilst I caught up with friends for lunch.

That evening with my daughter home I changed her nappy and noticed her poo wasn’t normal, my daughter was 5 months old at the time and exclusively fed with my breast milk, but this poo was very different.

I contacted my mother in law and asked how my daughter had been with her and the bloody cheeky cow said “oh she was fine I gave her a little bit of my strawberry she absolutely loved it”.

Now people may think I’m being picky but I had already stated to everyone there was no way I will allow Olivia to have any solids until after she is 6 months old due to all the issues that can be caused through early weaning.

I told my partner that his mother was not to be anywhere near our daughter and that I was disgusted with her actions, my partner didn’t seem to understand and ultimately backed his mum.

I have stood my ground and although to keep the peace and my partner I have allowed her to see her grandchild it will never be unsupervised ever again and I do not speak to her, yes it may be uncomfortable for all of us but she has broken all trust.

Mums out there I want you to know that if someone breaks your wishes and especially if they put your child’s health at risk you have every right to cut ties or to put in precautionary measures.

Your child your rules and don’t let anyone try to tell you differently
