  • A man’s Maternity Leave ignorance – a belated apology

    A man’s Maternity Leave ignorance – a belated apology

My wife’s had 3 maternity leaves. All of which I’ve been in work fulltime getting home for 6pm to spend an hour doing the glory bits. I’m not so conceited that I didn’t realise it was a tough gig, but I would rebuff any bemoaning from Mrs Secret Dad Lad with ‘being at work isn’t exactly a f**king holiday’. Turns out, comparatively, it is.

During lockdown my wife’s more demanding job has meant she’s had to basically continue to work fulltime, albeit remotely. This has meant that I’ve had my own ‘Paternity Leave’ looking after our kids (Josephine 5, Ernie 3 and Walt 1) whilst their Mum works away in the loft. Here’s a chronicle of a typical day:

    • After helping with breakfast, Wife exits stage left.
    • J/E ask for a biscuit
    • Catch W climbing in washing machine whilst explaining to the others that biscuits are not part of breakfast.
    • Put Netflix on.
    • J sends E to ask for a biscuit.
    • Break up fight over who has the remote.
    • Put most guilty one on naughty step.
    • Catch W drinking from dog’s water bowl.
    • Read him a book he hates.
    • Forget one is on naughty step, they wander back to watch Netflix.
    • J/E ask for biscuit. We negotiate. They get raisins.
    • Decide they’ve watched too much Netflix, get crafts out.
    • W does a massive shit, spend 10 minutes fighting him to allow me the pleasure of wiping his arse.
    • Come back to crafts, but they’ve left and are back watching Netflix.
    • Clear up crafts, wishing whoever created slime a slow, gruesome death.
    • Give them early lunch because they’re pissing me off.
    • They hate my lunch. Give them crisps.
    • Put them in garden.
    • I tell E off for purposely lobbing balls into next door’s garden, meanwhile J tries to force W to play with her and he’s like ‘nah’ and bites her.
    • They’re all f**king crying.
    • We go inside.
    • I put on a film for big two, take up tired Mr bitey for his nap.
    • I hide for a bit.
    • They find me like they’re sniffer dogs and I’m selling pills at a festival.
    • They ask for a biscuit. I give them several just so they’ll f**k off.
    • They scream ‘Daddy we’re bored of this film!’ repeatedly and very loudly.
    • I run in and shout at them through gritted teeth that they’re going to wake their little brother up.
    • Little brother wakes up and starts crying.
    • Resist temptation to demonstrate how much I currently despise my two eldest children and go get W up.
    • The next 3 hours is a complete f**king parenting shitshow.
    • Mummy comes down from the loft and they turn into golden children.

And, it’s pretty much that everyday. Relentless doesn’t cover it. I may have it slightly tougher in one sense during lockdown as there’s less options to escape. But I also don’t have a newborn hanging off my tit, sterilization faff to worry about and an expectation from wider society that it should all come naturally to me. Plus, if the shit really does hit the fan, I have another parent available upstairs who could help me out.

What I’m getting at is all you maternity leave survivors, fair f**king play. I’ve experienced a small amount of what you endure(d) and I’m flagging. We love our kids, but when they’re young looking after them can be ferocious. So, to my wife especially, I apologise for taking your daily efforts in rearing our kids so magnificently for granted. I’ve had a big taste of humble pie. Sorry it’s taken so long.

Also, if you can give me access to the magical housework fairy you must have employed during your maternity leave – that would be great 👌🧚‍♀️

  • Do You See A Baby That Shouldn’t Be Born?

Tell me what you see when you look at this photo ?
Do you see a baby that shouldn’t be born ?
Do you see a baby who’s life is not valuable ?

The government does ! In the UK you can terminate a pregnancy up to 24 weeks, unless your child has Down Syndrome .. then it is legal to terminate up to 39 weeks and 6 days !

Layla was born with Down Syndrome early at 35 weeks and 6 days. That means the sweet little baby you are looking at in this photo, could have still been aborted on the day she was born. Just because she has an extra chromosome.

Heidi Crowter (who herself has Down Syndrome) is campaigning to change this .. For all babies in the womb to have the same legal standing.

  • This Is What Birth Without Consent Looks Like

This is what birth WITHOUT CONSENT looks like

This is what TAKING ADVANTAGE of the naivety of a young birthing woman looks like

A vulnerable 20 year old, oblivious to the fact that she had options, that she could say no

An unnecessary induction she was told was ESSENTIAL because her waters had broken.. only 4 hours earlier

Countless internal examinations, unconsented and unwarranted

The highest dose of Syntocin given to begin, because birth suite was heaving and they “needed to get things moving quickly”..

An immediate epidural because “she wouldn’t be able to manage the pain of contractions so better to get it done now”

A shortened time frame to push because “if a cesarean was necessary the Dr was available now”.. how convenient

A baby born distressed because his mother was pressured and panicking from the ticking time bomb of her allowed pushing time

A placenta instantly ripped from her body, with no option of a physiological 3rd stage, even though that was in her birth plan..

A young woman left wondering, is birth supposed to be that horrific? But later realising no, she’d been a product of ‘the system’

    TAKE CONTROL of your birth

Do your own research, be INFORMED, do not consent to anything you are not comfortable with

Knowledge is power and the power is in YOUR hands 💪🏻

  • To My Second Child I Loved Another Before You

    To my second child,

You’re not my first; that much is true.

I loved another before loving you.

I’m a different mother this time around.

More calm and confident I’ve found.

Since you came, there’s a new dimension.

Two children now want my attention.

I was so excited first time ‘round.

This time I want to slow things down

Your ‘firsts’ will all be ‘lasts’ for me.

Last crawl and last to ride my knee.

You were not my firstborn this is true,

But the last child I will have is you.

You’re the last lullaby I’ll ever sing.

And ‘lasts’ are a special kind of thing.💙

  • A Sculpture To Capture The Trauma Of A Still Born Or Baby Loss

A sculpture made to capture the emotional trauma of a still born or a pregnancy that never made it full term.

This sculpture will probably hit the hearts of women who see this and this isn’t to cause upset, I felt if anything, it enables people to realise that no matter what stage a foetus is developed and what stage your loss occurs, your loss is always a profound heart breaking loss that the mother endures.

People say “she wasn’t even that far gone” to attempt to ease a mother’s pain but those ignorant comments can not help fill the void of her loss.

1 in 4 pregnancies are lost before birth so this post goes out to all the angel babies who never made it and all the heroic mothers that have endured and grieved their loss ❤️

Above content credit goes to Sammie Steers

Take a look at more of the sculptures amazing work at http://facebook.com/maddilynnmemory

For parents who are expecting a new life but find themselves facing death, and when a mother has physically given birth to a baby, accepting the reality of that emotionally is immensely difficult. Mothers will still experience all the normal post-natal reactions, which may be especially distressing because their baby has died.

When a baby dies, fathers often have a great deal to manage. Not only are they grieving for their baby, but their concern for their partner makes this a very difficult time. Often they may be asked how the baby’s mother is rather than how they, as fathers, are feeling themselves.

Society is likely to dictate that men should be strong, always ready and able to do the supporting – but fathers too have lost their baby and will need to find ways to express their grief. They too need support and care. For help and support please see https://childbereavementuk.org

  • I Feel Bitter And Jealous That My Baby Is Not Healthy

I posted this in response to someone feeling a certain way about other’s healthy kids & their heart warrior & their own heathy kids, but I wanted to share it to see if anyone else feels/felt this way because I honestly feel so guilty about it.

I can’t wait to NOT feel this way but I can’t help it maybe I’m just not as good of a person as I thought so here goes.

I feel like garbage for having these feelings but my husband & I tried so hard to get pregnant, it took so long & then to find out at 26 weeks our son has a complex CHD & will need the 3 stages of open heart surgery to reroute everything & then a transplant as a young adult.

I’m now 29 weeks & can’t help but feel bitter & jealous when I see healthy babies, especially with people I know that weren’t trying to get pregnant/didn’t want to & weren’t ready & don’t even get me started on the mum’s I know who considered abortion or adoption for their healthy child I’m like WHY couldn’t I have a healthy baby!

I did EVERYTHING “the right way” I went to school, I got a great career, I dated for a long time, then married, then bought a house & then & only then when I felt I could give my child everything it needed, everything I didn’t have as a kid myself, did I try to conceive.

I feel guilty for feeling that way especially to my friends’ kids or even my cousin who did NOT want a baby, she continued to use drugs in her first trimester, hard ones. She considered abortion & adoption, she continues to smoke cigarettes. NO ONE supported her decision to keep her baby…but SHE gets a healthy baby?

I know I sound so rude & judge-y but REALLY! I’m beyond jealous especially because I was the only one who encouraged her to clean up & do right by her baby after she made the decision to keep it. I stood behind her when no one else did because we are both pregnant right now, just a week apart… AND SO with all that we are going to face with our son before & after he is born, me having to relocate will most likely cost me my job & who knows if we will be able to keep our house on only my husband’s income & who knows if my husband’s employer won’t fire him because of all the time he will need off between surgeries & what not & who knows if our son will even live… when it rains it f*cking pours!!!

I will love my child but I am sad he will not be healthy!
