  • Top Tips For Any Dads After Your Child Is Born

    Last Month was Breastfeeding Awareness Month. So I figured id drop some knowledge on my fellow Dads and soon to be Dads. Here’s what it looks like for the first few weeks or months after your child is born. Yup if mom breastfeeds they pretty much are tucked like this and at times you’ll wonder “what is there for me to do?” Here’s my top 5 tips for any Dad after your child is born.

    1. For night feedings. When mom wakes up in the middle of the night. You get up and ask if she needs any help or water. The truth is most of the time she will say no but just the fact that you offered will go far.

    2. Ask mom if she can pump and then pick 1 feeding that you will always do. Mom will take on almost everything and will burn herself out if you let her. At times you may have to force her to rest without worrying about the baby. This is an easy way to do that without a fight.

    3. Don’t put a time limit on how long mom breastfeed the baby. It’s not just about feeding your child it’s about them bonding as well. I know everyone has a diffrent length of time they will breastfeed and as a Dad it’s hard to fully understand. Do not I repeat DO NOT try and rush this process it’s not our place and it’s not safe. You will open yourself up to a fight you can’t win.

    4. Be patient. I know as a Dad the first few weeks we are equally excited and yet not as important yet. Your time will come faster than you know. Babies grow fast and the stronger bigger they get the more Daddy Time will be coming your way.

    5. Paternity leave! If you have it TAKE IT. The early stages of a childs life are not just for moms to enjoy. I know as men making the money especially after having a baby but trust me. You can always make money but there are no instant replays in life. It doesn’t make you more of a man to not take the leave. It’s equally as important that you as a Dad get to be a part of the early development of your child.

  • Heat Stroke In Babies And Toddlers

    HEAT STROKE IN BABIES & TODDLERS

    Heat exhaustion and heat stroke don’t just appear out of the blue. There are signs of heat stress, which, if left untreated, can lead to heat exhaustion and heat stroke.

    The initial signs of heat stress include:

    • Heat rash that doesn’t go away when the skin is cooled, called “prickly heat”. This rash looks like a red cluster of pimples or small blisters on or around the

    NECK – UPPER CHEST – GROIN – ELBOW CREASES.

    • Heat cramps happen as muscles and bodily systems deplete their supply of electrolytes, particularly salt and water, and as a reaction to lower blood volumes. These cramps usually occur in the ABDOMEN – LEGS – ARMS and are accompanied by MOODINESS and FUSSINESS. If a baby, toddler or young child starts showing signs of crankiness or fussiness this can be an early indication of heat stress.

    • Watch for unusual erratic and repetitive behaviors, such as repeatedly standing and sitting.

    If the above symptoms worsen and start to include:

    • Intense thirst

    • Dizziness or fainting

    • Pale skin

    • Rapid but weak heart rate

    • Headache

    • Nausea and vomiting

    • Concentrated pee & decreased output (yellow/orange)

    Then your child is becoming dehydrated and likely has heat exhaustion.

    TREATMENT:

    • IMMEDIATELY STOP ALL ACTIVITY !!!

    • Remove clothing

    • Move to a cool place

    • Give cool water with a teaspoon of salt per quart, or sports drink. (Cold water and salt tablets can actually increase cramping symptoms.) (not for babies)

    • Gently massage child’s muscles

    • Elevate feet on a pillow if they will lie down

    Rest and rehydration is usually enough, though some children may need more time to recover than others. Hospitalization is rarely needed.

    DO call your family doctor.

  • Here Is Why Babies Shouldn’t Drink Water

     

    I just wanted to make a Public Service Announcement!!

    Water intoxication is very real and can happen so easily!! Please only offer babies 6-12 months no more than 2oz of water in a 24 hour period!! Babies younger than 6 months cannot have any at all! Currently dealing with my 11mo having water intoxication!

    I only ever offer 2oz a day and usually she doesn’t finish it. Yesterday she discovered she could drink the bath water. I didn’t think much of it at the time and later ended up rushing her to the ER. She became lethargic, started vomiting, and then was struggling to breath! She had so much water in her it was compressing her lungs!

    She is doing a lot better now with breathing but we are still vomiting very often! I just wanted to put this out there for those who don’t believe it matters and give their baby as much as they want. Breastmilk/formula is plenty!! And just because baby is close to a year does not mean they can have more than 2oz!! My daughter is a year in 3 weeks and here we are! Thanks for reading my rant lol

    Elly is doing really good today! We are at 6 hours without puking so far!! She’s even playing again! I also wanted to add, she did not have any water in her lungs, they were clear! It was the first thing the physician checked for! She did not aspirate nay water and did not have dry drowning! Purely only water intoxication! Also once the child is one year of age it is 8oz of water per year of age up to 8 years old!
