  • Parents Beware When On Holiday

A 7 year old girl has been left with horrific scars after suffering chemical burns from a temporary henna tattoo!

She was on holiday with her family in Egypt when she was treated to the black henna design on her forearm. But shortly arriving home, the seven-year-old complained the pattern was itchy.

The pretty swirls soon erupted in a series of painful blisters, which had to be cut off by medics at a specialist burns unit, leaving the girl with permanent scarring.

Black henna tattoos have become fashionable as a temporary, but realistic looking, form of body art. A chemical called paraphenylenediamine (PPD), is added to henna to make the tattoos darker and increase their lifespan. While PPD is present in many products, such as hair dye, it is usually used in very small doses. The addition of PPD into henna can cause chemical burns and lead to allergic reactions. In extreme cases, black henna tattoos can lead to swelling, blistering and permanent scarring of the skin. Black henna tattoos can also increase sensitivity to PPD, meaning you could have a serious allergic reaction to legal hair dyes.

  • A Simple Trip To The Dentist Nearly Turned Deadly

As parents we always want to do what’s best for our kids, from teaching them manners to growing up to be amazing humans. Yesterday was our 6 month dentist check up. Both girls got a cleaning and received there cavity free certificate, but all the happiness faded within the next 2 minutes.

As we where checking out Aeverie told me her throat hurt, and I assured her she was ok, but she wasn’t! She looked at me with her eyes watering and said she couldn’t swallow (she started salivating) I went to grab her Epi (AUVI-Q) she had turned a light pale blue. As I administered her epi and she immediately started vomiting profusely! She kept saying she couldn’t breath she didn’t feel good, her chest was tight, so she was put on oxygen!!

Thank goodness we where still at the dentist where there was a doctor, the yhad additional epi’s and had oxygen. Paramedics were called, she was transported to the children’s hospital. She was given a second does of epi in the ambulance, was monitored for about 6 hours and was stable enough to go home with a list of medications, including steroids and a new prescription for epi.

I was scared. I was SCARED! I felt she wouldn’t make it. It happened so fast. She reacted to the “nut free” fluoride. Turns out the manufacturer doesn’t disclose to the dentist office that it’s made on shared equipment and the same facility with all of the top 8.

I was given information stating that it was free from peanuts, tree nuts, dairy, fish, shellfish, gluten, soy and eggs. No where in the pages the handed to me or the bottle did it state the may contain. But when I called the manufacturer the paper states it in bold red letters that it was made on shared equipment and same facility. Aeverie reacted to it within 2 minutes. Thank you to all who where there to help. To keep me calm as I was literally crying inside, trying to be strong for my sweet girl! THANK YOU!

There is still so much work to be done, advocating that food allergens are not only in food but nearly in everything you can think of!

  • The Sad Reality Of A Child With Food Allergies

The sad reality of allergies/ intolerance’s. Behind all the smiling photos, fun days out and snuggles under the duvet watching their favourite film are the real feeling of fear, pain & illness.

To often we post the proud pictures of our children with big smiles & it’s all to easy to forget how they really feel.

That big smiley picture I posted on social media this morning of my fun-loving chap soon wore away as the day went on, being replaced slowly by stomach cramps, abdo pain & diarrhoea. The tears came & again the feeling of “why me”all because he put his hand near on his mouth after traveling on a train.

My son is allergic to nuts, wheat, glucose and lactose intolerant, we have to be very very careful of what he eats and how it is prepared, even a bread crumb can cause pain and discomfort.

The slightest wrong food can cause an  awful night of toilet runs & overall a feeling of sadness and yes even children can feel depression. So the next time you see a child that can’t have something don’t just think ” oh they should be used to it by now” because they may put on a smile but inside they do cry, they do sometimes need a hug & they do feel hurt at their difference to everyone else.

Birthday parties are awful for my son to attend, we have to  take a packed lunch which my son is fine with, but seeing all his friends eating cake, pizza and all these bright coloured exciting food makes him sad, we have to ensure he never puts his hand near his mouth as like ive said the slightest crumb causes havoc with his health.

It really is a sad reality that a 5-year-old child is fearful of everything in case he becomes ill, the last thing he needs is hearing people say “surely he will grow out of it” or “maybe try a little bit at a time and increasing his intake” allergies can not only be deadly but also soul-destroying and depressing

  • How Would You Feel If I Left Dog Poo In The Park?

    Dear parents

How would you feel if I left dog poo in the park?

Disgusted? Worried your child might put their hand in it? Concerned it could make them ill?

That is exactly how I feel about your child’s chocolate chip cookie on the roundabout, or the dripping ice cream sticks by the swings. Instead of dog poo, I found discarded chocolate smeared all across the grass.

You see, my two-year daughter has a severe milk allergy.

When she ran ahead to get on the roundabout, I was only a few seconds behind her but by the time I got there, she had already poked her finger in the melting cookie.

‘Can I have this Mummy?’ she asked innocently.

Next time you visit the park, please take your litter and unwanted food with you. Let my daughter play safely without the dangers you have left behind.

It might be ‘only a cookie’ to you but it’s poison to my baby.

    Thankyou

Cow’s Milk Allergy is one of the most common food allergies to affect babies and young children in the United Kingdom, between 2 and 3 percent of children younger than 3 are allergic to milk and many do not out grow of it and will be allergic to milk all their lives.

    Milk Allergy Symptoms

    • Hives

    • Stomach upset

    • Vomiting

    • Bloody stools, especially in infants

    • Anaphylaxis, a rare, potentially life-threatening reaction that impairs breathing and can send the body into shock.

Cow’s milk allergy is managed by completely eliminating cow’s milk protein from a baby or childs diet, as even a small amount of cow’s milk protein could potentially trigger an allergic reaction so even a seemingly harmless discarded biscuit at a park can cause problems and pains for a child.

It doesn’t take two minutes to clear up after yourself or your child and make parks a happy and a safe place to play for all.

  • You Will Never Guess What He Is Allergic to

Now we normally associate allergies, to nuts, dairy and the norm like washing powder, pet hair etc.

    Some of which are deadly.

So when I received a call to collected my 3 year old son from a birthday party because he had a rash and was vomited, I assumed he had a viral infection, only when he started struggling to breathe did I realise we were in real danger.

We rushed to hospital to be told he was having a severe allergic reaction.

Once he was better they conducted numerous tests to try and determine what had caused it, I had to keep a food diary.

After 5 months we were still none the wiser and I was living in constant fear that we would discover what caused it by accident and my little lad could have another reaction.

One sunny Monday afternoon the ice cream van pulled up and my 3 children wanted to get a treat.

I was fine about it, knowing that my son had ice cream before and was fine, my other son asked if he could have a drink instead.

My eldest bought a fizzy orange drink he drank the majority and off he went to play on his laptop.

My little lad picked up the orange drink and drank the last few sips, within a matter of minutes the old rash appeared and I rushed him back to hospital… this time with the bottle of orange.

More tests were carried out and we discovered my lad is allergic to the Colouring (Beta Carotene).

I’m happy about this, it’s so easy to avoid and won’t effect his life as long as he checks labels.

I’ve never met another child allergic to fizzy orange.
